I am a nervous flyer and will start having anxiety days before. In the past when I mentioned this to the flight attendants I was not helped. They looked at me more as a burden then helping me. I have to say, the exception was from a flight from Chicago back to Brussels. I was very scared and had a migraine. One of the flight attendants noticed me and saw my fear and pain. Mid flight on of the 3 pilots came to calm me down and that changed so much for me. I will forever be very thankful for that flight attendant and the pilot. After the flight I contacted the company to express my gratitude to the flight attendant and the pilot. So, follow Stella's advise and to tell them instead of being like me and making it worse for yourself.

Marina Wezelenburg I've told flight attendants every time and like you, they look at me like I'm a burden. I've yet to have anyone on the plane reassure me lol I am quiet and I panic internally but still always voice my fears to the attendants hoping for that little reassurance haha. Maybe it's cause I'm in my 30's and I'm expected to "get over it" haha 😝

KimH007 same here!!! Mid 30's but a fear is a fear and has no age on it! For them it is a normal thing, but not for us. If it wasn't for the migraine and being sick, they wouldn't have noticed me nor my fear which made it worse and I was hyperventilating. Luckely there was one that paid attention.

i used to be anxious at flights but i recently overcame the fear on a trip to atlanta and i almost feel like sharing what i learned that helped me get over my fear lol. so much so that i'm looking forward to my next flight to see if it helps again. here's a little breakdown of what helped me overcome my fear/apprehension. 1) i learned some fundamentals about flight and planes. for example, planes can fly with just one of the engines in the rare case that one of the two engines fails. and actually, if both fail, the plane continues to glide for tens of miles. it does not just drop straight down, which was what i thought. this is simply a matter of engineering and science. 2) i watched a video on youtube that explained all of the sounds heard on an airplane. in particular, there is one alien type sound that i always heard and just immediately thought something was wrong. no, it's actually a normal sound made by hydraulics starting. 3) turbulence is normal. this is just the fucking truth. i used to think "omg, turbulence, the pilot is losing control!!"......no. turbulence is a normal, expected inconvenience. i had to get this through my thick skull. 4) this last point might be hard to explain, but i think it played a role especially for the takeoff. here it is: i had to just learn to let go. if i was on the plane, and it was starting to take off, i was going to go up in the air and that was it. it's a psychological tactic. here's an analogy: not letting go would be like an animal that continues to pull away when he is being dragged by a lasso around the neck, hurting himself. he has to let go, and counterintuitively move towards the person pulling in order to release the strain on its neck. i had to tell myself i was going up into the sky and that was the end of it. that's about it. all of these points helped me get over me anxiety on my last flight. i hope this helps someone else. don't believe some of the claims i've made? that's fine. you don't take my word for it, go ahead and look into it yourself

A lot of people including myself only fear takeoffs and landings because that’s where the human element comes into play. Once the plane is in the air. I’m fine. Because then it’s all about science and physics. Planes are designed to stay in the air. I trust the Auto pilot.

I have a flight in two days and i’m shaking thinking about it right now. U are not alone! But i try to help myself by Breaking down my thoughts before. Like asking myself “what exactly am i afraid of?” And then debunking every irrational little thing, like turbulence; planes are built to handle way more extreme levels of turbulence than they will ever meet up in the air + i once had to sit through some really bad turbulence while landing during a storm, and in the situation i really bossed up and calmed myself better than i had ever imagined i would be able to. Another thing is i look at the other passengers who are sleeping even through take off and landing, and who are eating and cracking jokes - also the flight staff; think about how this is their job - they expect to be done and “home” ever night and are ready to do it all again the next day. Nobody would do what they do if flying was as dangerous as i make it up to be in my mind. To them it is a normal 9-5. Hope your trip worked out, and you had a good flight. Pray for meeeeee

Our bodies have the ability to calm us down after we have that adrenaline rush from fear. I take Xanax and that usually helps but you will be fine! Know you’re not alone in your anxious feelings and it’s perfectly normal to get nervous!

I don’t agree with tip one. Getting to the airport too early intensifies my anticipation of the flight. Actually getting to the airport and getting in the plane and taking off as soon as possible helps me more. There is no anticipation anxiety and I feel like I’m getting the flight over with and I can start focusing on landing and being done with the fear. Does anyone else agree?
@lisalu910

Absolutely, 100% (I posted the same comment myself.) The times I'd have to almost run to catch my flight I had no time for the anxiety to build up, I was more focused on actually catching my flight and relieved when I got there on time. Getting to the gate just in time for boarding is WAY better than sitting there for an hour or more getting more anxious by the minute.

I usually fly with westjet. And I am a super nervous flyer, like turbulance makes me want to cry. I am so afraid of dying, the days prior to flights I feel like I'm walking to my death. I always found that talking to the attendants helped, one gave me a tablet to watch tv for free and something that always stuck with me was when an attendant said "the pilots have families they wanna get home to also".. I also talk to fellow flyers, I cried in the arms of a stranger my last flight lol we landed and I cried and hugged him. Super nice old gentleman, I had called my dad and said goodbye thinking I was gonna die. The isle seat does help me, and so does getting up and moving. This video is super helpful. I live in newfoundland Canada, and my dream is to make it to austraila. Strange tip!! In bad turbulence I close my eyes and pretend I'm the pilot. sorta helps, and shake your legs it removes some of the shaking feeling.

I am an extremely nervous flyer with panic disorder... so I'm a ton of fun! LOL I just wanted to say that these are some AWESOME tips! The distractions are my number one. Audio books, movies/TV on your device, relaxing music and a book to read.. whatever you enjoy, it makes everything so much easier on your mind. Also, I make small talk to people around me. I know this is a faux pas to some but, most of the time, people are super happy to have someone else to talk to during the flight. Unless they're asleep or in their own entertainment, guess what? They're also looking for a distraction! For anyone else out there with PD, it'll be OK! You're survived so much more than a little plane ride.. you got this!

Former flight attendant that retired in 2017 after flying for 33 years with Northwest Airlines based at MSP, DTW, Back to MSP, and 9 years with Delta,( Really big mistake...we'll leave it at that) total of 42 years. Anyway Stella, sound advice!!!! I would have said the same thing,, I arrive at least 3 hours before domestic as a pax, and 4 hours for international. I also helped a friend of mine in PHX on his FEAR OF FLYING GROUP. It is very successful, and it works. I could always tell the white knuckle first time flier. I had a passenger ask me one time, "If we're going to fly, who drives this plane?" I took the pax up the flight deck while we were on the ground, and she met the captain. At the end of her flight, we gave her a bottle of champagne, pair of wings, and a first time certificate flier!!!

I think you should talk about or share your knowledge about the plane's safety because thats what makes people afraid of flying. What makes people scared is the lack of control on the flight. You cant do and see anything. And everything is in the pilots hands. What is above normal turbulence and when is the time that you dont need to panic. Do you get information about the flight from the cockpit. I am always scared to ask the flight attendant..especially when the flight is too BUMPY i dont know if they actually know whats happening out there. ALSO do flight attendants get scared too on a flight and when did this happen!! share that with us

My fear of flying started when a 747 I was on had several tires blow out when we were accelerating for take off 40 years ago in Hawaii. The massive vibration, overhead bins opening and things flying out left a metal scar that lasted a long time. I eventually got over it but I still hated flying with turbulence. My solution was putting on my earbuds with a song with a heavy beat to it (rock, disco), play it loud and when the turbulence gets real bad and lift my feet off the floor for a few seconds at a time. I hate hate hate being early at the airport. Being scared of hell is even worse if you wait in the devils waiting room. I hate it. Getting to the airport -> bag drop off -> security -> getting to the gate on point of boarding -> less scary

I tend to agree with you. I actually do better when I'm moving at a fast clip and then get to the gate right as they're ready to board. That way I don't have a lot of time to just sit there with the anxiety building. The least anxiety I've had flying is when I barely make the plane - I'm more like YES! I made it! If I get there early and have to sit at the gate for an hour, I tend to size up the other passengers and try to figure out which one might be the hijacker.

Deffo different for everyone, as someone with a bit of panic disorder, or a lot a bit, if I’m already going to have anxiety or a full blown panic attack I need to be there early, have it happen, and calm down while I’m there, or everyone on the plane is really going to worry about my sanity

I’m not a nervous flyer but one thing I always do before take-off is say the Lords Prayer. It gives me that extra feeling of assurance that it will be a safe and enjoyable flight for me AND my fellow passengers and flight crew. I am a very nervous flyer, and as I get older, it gets worse. It's strange because I've flown a lot, and I've flown many times to Asia which is a heck of a long flight! I've used many of these tips. I have to sit in the aisle because I'm afraid of heights, and looking out the window freaks me out. The other part that I hate is the noises that planes make, especially when taking off. The noises are different every time. I distract myself with loud music or a TV show on my phone. I also hate how the plane feels when it has to decelerate a bit from the take off speed. It feels like the plane is braking mid-air, and it makes my stomach turn. I hate planes (even though I work for Boeing 🤦). It doesn't keep me from traveling though. I just have to learn to cope.

I think another good tip is to be informed! A lack of knowledge is a major factor behind the fear of flying. For example, a lot of people don’t understand what turbulence is and they see it as dangerous. Getting them to understand that air is fluid and constantly changing goes a long way to helping them work with turbulence...once they understand that turbulence is similar to the ocean waves or a bumpy road it's a lot easier for them to stay calm and rational. Also, don't watch movies or documentaries about plane crashes because they give you a lot to imagine lol.

I commented on this video talking about my fear of flying and while I didn't mention turbulence, it is one of the bigger factors of my fear. The only place I ever fly too is bad for turbulence when trying to land (it's usually very windy at their airport). I have educated myself before on what turbulence hoping it would help but it didn't haha. I start off mentally reassuring myself but when we hit turbulence and I see the look on someone else's face I get scared again lol (yes I've tried to wear an eye mask but I couldn't keep it on. Yes I'm weird, I know).

It’s been several years since I’ve been on a flight now, due to severe fear of flying. I used to talk to the flight attendants and my favourite question to ask them was usually how many years had they been doing this job, and then how many times had anything gone wrong. It helped me to rationalise things slightly. I’m hoping to do a flight next year, it would be transatlantic to visit Orlando from the uk. I feel like this fear has really made me miss out on a lot but it really does completely take over all logical thought. Any advice to get myself in that plane next year would be hugely appreciated.

Hi Stella. Thanks for this video. I love your very upbeat, cheerful style and your tips are really helpful too. In fact you are my tip number 6 - I am kind of ok after take off and if we're cruising along smoothly above the clouds. But if we hit any kind of turbulence with all that shaking and dropping, I am seized by an overwhelming feeling of fear and panic. However, when that happens I always look at the flight attendants and the sight of them just carrying on chatting and smiling as usual is so very reassuring. If there were any real danger as opposed to my perceived sense of danger I am sure they would be just as scared as me and showing it too. This really helps to calm me down so might be helpful for others too. Keep on smiling girl!
