Overcoming Fear Of Communicating With ATC | Student Pilot

It's a fact of flying that you're going to have to deal with ATC. That can raise some anxiety in a student pilots because at first it seems so complicated to do. There's the initial call-up where you have to state a load of things that you may have never even heard before, then you have to listen to ATC response and instructions and figure out what in the world they mean. Then on top of that, you have to talk to them again to show them you understood what they said! It seems like a lot, but when you break it down and have a plan in place for how and what you're going to communicate, it makes things a heck of a lot easier.
Enjoy the comms!

I had this fear at the start. Fear of not being able to read back or not hearing correctly and having to ask for a repeat. Feeling a stupid. It was like a barrier. I kept listening to others in frequency to grasp the basic then tried it myself: wrote instructions down, it went all fine and basically I understood I was fearing something I should not fear. There’s nothing wrong in being a student learning. It’s only a matter of experience 😅

That was excellent instruction! You let the student take his time, think through it as many times as he needed to be ready, and he nailed it on the first try as a result. That's how you keep someone excited about flying and not feeling like they're dumb or struggling.

Thank you! It’s about the student, not me. As long as it takes for them to get it is the amount of time we’ll spend working on it together!

There were two times that my CFIs let me know I was ready to talk to ATC… 1) “How long have you been waiting to make that call?” 2) When I held my hand up to answer before the CFI could prompt me, and he said “the rest is yours”, and just sat back with a smile. That moment it clicks, in each stage of this journey we call aviation, is something we never forget.

This dude will be rewatching this on KZfaq a year from now and all he'll be able to think about is how he was paying for both the engine time and the CFI time as ATIS was looping through... Precious.

I'm an instrument rated private pilot and I still write out the script for my initial taxi clearance so I don't forget an item. It helps me get into the rhythm of ATC comm's, and getting off to a good start builds confidence for the rest of the flight.

Bring your students to the tower to visit. We like having visitors and it helps "humanize" the voices telling them what to do.😊

When I was learning radio calls, I would listen to your channel and every aviation channel I could find and pause the video, say what I thought was the correct call, then play the video to see if I was right. It was excellent practice because I could get immediate confirmation without being nervous about talking to ATC live

Thanks for doing this video. Before I went for flight training I would lissen to atc tower /ground at the airport where the flight school was and after awhile you got to know the controller and the airplanes that fly in and out. Very helpful.

Great topic! I'm only like 6 hours into flight training but I got the chance to talk last lesson and it was kinda' fun, ngl lol. Very simple things to start with so I never felt overwhelmed. And also, learning to fly might cost an arm and a leg, but holy **** is it ever fun! Ground school session tomorrow, then we head to the skies for another practical lesson! Best decision I have made in years.

When I started flying again after a 25 year absence, talking on the radio was the hardest part to “re-learn”….yup, talkoffs, landings, stalls etc all cam back pretty quick…took a while to talk comfortably again on the radio…kudos to patient and positive instruction from Lewdix

Great video these are great points. I really love the patients. My first instructor was not so patient. I struggled with my radio communications. My new instructor was amazing though he told me to imagine I am chatting with my buddy/friend and letting them know where I am and what I want to do. They will let you know where to go what what to do. I passed my PPL last month!

Man, when I started my PPL journey, my instructor forced me to talk to the ATC, I was flying for a week. Next week he really made me feel guilty whenever I'm flying. Then I had enough and changed my instructor from my school. The new one is always teaching, patient, always asks questions and most importantly wants me to do good. After flying with him for 3 weeks I significantly improved my comms. He is so proud of me, I love this dude. If your instructor makes these mistakes, I think you should consider changing to another one. Because you are already paying thousands on your training:)

I also did a whole lot of simming with Pilotedge ATC. Those folks are great and let you practice with real people in the comfort of your home. Have a great weekend!

So, a funny thing happened the other day. I decided to re- watch the Agents of SHIELD and it dawned on me that LewDix is the voice of the saucy yet oddly brilliant Fitz. I've been through most of the episodes and Fitz has yet to say the thing. You know, "Remain clear of my propeller!" Damn these media conglomerates and their cancel culture hippie nonsense.
