I love hearing him breathe hard while working. It's soooo real. It's like what we really go through. I mean, this man had me laughing hard! It was how hard he was breathing that made me pay close attention. I was feeling how challenging gardening can be, and I became more excited. I can't wait to get into my yard this year😅. As you mature, it is more challenging to divide plants; heck, with this arthritis in both knees, I'm just happy to be able to walk, let alone push a shovel into the ground with any force. I commend you, sir! You've made me want to at least try. You made me remember the work that I'm about to start and your actions have made me want to go out tomorrow and battle the host of bees and wasps in my yard. It's April, and these bees are out in full force!! So, thank you very much. I mean, you got me laughing, and that's a great starter for me. Thank you, and keep on teaching us old folks, too. (P.S. - I wish young people, especially young adults, would help aging gardeners. It's hard to push the shovel into the soil even when the soil isn't hard. Why, they might make a new friend, or two. When I was the leader of a girl scout troop, we helped the elderly by raking their leaves. If I had known how much those dried leaves made great 'fuel' for plants, I would have taken those bags to gardeners. I hope this statement encourages young folks to consider offering their 'powerful feet' to dig a hole for some elderly gardener somewhere.)😊

With us in our videos... What you see - is what you get! Real down to earth stuff.... with hopefully enough useful information to make watching worthwhile. Whether its David being out of breath, little calamities, noisy background activity in a busy nursery, mis-spoken words or phrases.... it's often, all there! We try to film and craft our videos in a way that makes the viewer feel they are right there.... looking in over David's shoulder or watching on from the side, showing in a simple, hopefully, easy to understand way, how to do things or pointing out the beautiful and often interesting features of garden plants. So, thanks for spotting this and letting us know that you approve. Stay tuned because there's lots more videos coming.... And if you haven't already, you might like to consider subscribing to our channel because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video, it will turn up automatically in your feed. And if you find any of our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly click the "like" button too, because that will help other people discover the down to earth, information as well.

Perfect timing! I planted coral bells two springs ago, so I shall divide mine once the snow melts and it’s dry enough. I had to laugh when you paused to cut away the willow shoots , that’s good gardening practices, and for us gardeners it would be impossible not to do something like that right then and there!

Hopefully, there's been a lot more "good" than bad! Certainly now, if you try to follow and replicate David's tips and suggestions, we will be able to enjoy much more success. When you get a chance, we suggest you take a little while and do your research, because here on this channel you will find profiled.... some of the best varieties we've trialed over the years. Then if you live in our region, try to get over to some of our partnering garden center locations, because that's where you will find plants like we feature in the videos. Nice big, premium sized specimens, that are healthy and ready to grow! Here's a link that will help you find where they are all located: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ Finally, have you subscribed to or channel yet? That's what happens when you incorporate plenty of organic matter. Over the years, the mulch breaks down and adds to the structure and fabric of the soil, and of course by adding it at planting time, you are mixing it in right at the place where the roots of plants are able to take advantage of it. Thanks for taking the trouble to post your thoughts. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), they will turn up automatically in your feed. Thanks, sounds like you didn't enjoy much success first time around! Which is sad to hear. This time try to rewatch our video and replicate the things David talks about and you should get much better results, they are not really that difficult to grow, Just try to start out with the best, healthiest plants you can lay your hands on! Be sure to dig a good generous sized hole in a free draining location, mix in plenty of organic matter (because that's the stuff they love to get their roots into). Don't plant them too deep, and of course mulch and water them well until they get established. But before you do that...., take a little while and do some research. Here on this channel you will find several varieties that we've trialed over the years, and then, if you live in our region, take your wish list to some of our partnering garden centers, because that's where you will find and be able to examine plants like we feature in the videos. Started this garden 21 years ago, and planted a few of the old variety Palace Purple of Heuchera. They spread over a hillside and I have given away hundreds of plants to gardening friends. Will you please define what you mean by “humus” “planting compost”, the NPK of the granular fertilizer you used, and what mulch you use. What is in your “compost”. I buy every new variety of Heuchera that I find, and love each one either in a small patch of one kind, or mixed with other part shade plants. I do not put them in direct sun even when the label says that they are for that environment. They get crispy leaves even when watered well David, you are a joy to watch and listen to as I get the same happiness in my soul when working in my garden😊

That's great to hear. Palace Purple (along with Dale's Strain) started it all off...., they were the two originals that provided the inspiration that led to the development of all the new ones. Humus (thank you for asking) is the term we use for describing the dark brown fibrous, organic matter that is left when leaves and garden compost breaks down, it is the stuff that brings soil "alive". Providing nutrients, and an open "fluffy", moisture retentive structure to mineral soils - it is wonderful stuff. Plants love to get their roots into it, especially those that are derived from woodland dwellers like Coral Bells. The NPK formulation that we use is 14-4-10 it is a commercial formulation that is similar to the ones usually offered in garden centers. The mulch we use is chopped pine bark which is a by product from the timber industry - we use this in preference to hardwood mulch because it is better for ericaceous (acid loving) plants (Rhodos, azaleas, pieris etc.) doesn't release so much calcium as the hardwood types. We agree with you in putting your Heucheras in partial shade, that's their natural environment. Just, some people that want to grow them, don't have any shade, so we try to guide them in choosing the best types for tolerating sun. Thanks for your continued support and kind words, David and all of us here, enjoy our gardening, and it is WONDERFUL to hear that you are finding contentment and happiness out in your garden too. Please continue to "like" and share any of our videos that you find worthy, because that will help other people discover the information too.

I said "every 2 years" in the video... and of course, it depends on the variety, the area, and conditions, this is not a hard and fast rule, so you could do it less frequently i.e. every 3-4 years. I fell in love with coral bells about 6 years ago. I bought over 30 and planted all the different varieties. I’m zone 8b I live on a hill with extremely rocky clay soil. I planted with good soil. I think I have 7 left, they look much smaller than when I originally purchased. I believe I paid around $15-$17 per plant. I think my soil just has to many rocks and tree roots. To afraid to take that kind of loss again. I really loved them and had high hopes. I had cutie pie which was one of my favorites-bright green foliage with pink flowers. I also had the Carmel, black cherry and fire engine red. 😢

Thank you for your kind comments. As you've probably noted in the video, and especially in your clay soil - copious amounts of organic matter is going to be very, VERY important! You might consider adding extra soil and raising up the planting positions too, so the crowns are elevated up out of the sticky, cold clay in winter and early spring. Obviously, mulch them well and with your tree roots, water during any prolonged dry periods. Its a bit of rigmarole, but worth the effort, because they are gorgeous and should do better for you. What fertilizer did you use? I just purchased w4 Carmel Coral Bells. Had to go to many garden stores before I found them.

Glad to hear you eventually managed to find this superb variety, not every garden center carries all our varieties all the time, so it is usually a good idea to call ahead and inquire. We use a well-balanced slow release fertilizer, because it supplies the main macro and minor nutrients in portion and releases them over an extended period, so you only have to apply it once (usually in spring). We don't specify individual brands (because we want to preserve our independence), but if you visit and talk to the experts at your favorite garden center, they will be able to advise you with the ones they find work best in your area. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well. Finally, now that our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are fully stocked with fresh new plants, if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, including some particularly wonderful selections of Coral Bells.

Are there bigger nurseries in the US... The property seems absolutely massive

Yes, there is some other nursery properties that would probably have larger acreages. But for us, it's not about size.... It's all about QUALITY, PERFORMANCE and FRESHNESS of our plants 😉👏 Because we are located right here in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, typically our plants are delivered to our network of partnering garden centers: within 24 hours. That's why they are continually arriving nursery fresh in peak condition, so that they get off to a great start and quickly settle in to give you an instant effect and hopefully years of pleasure and enjoyment. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well. Finally, now that the cooler weather of Fall arrives, it brings with it the BEST TIME of PLANTING and since our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are continuing to bring in stocks of gorgeous plants, if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections.

Do you have any suggestions for nurseries, like yourself that supply to other nursery/greenhouses, in the mid-west (Indiana)? We have started a family owned greenhouse and I can start some plants, but would like to add more shrubs and perennials as well as variety. We are needing a supplier for next year’s plants.

Would I cut out any dead parts?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, older clumps can have dead or very weak parts in their centers, and these are unlikely to ever be any good, so you might as well get rid of them. If you haven’t already, might we suggest that you subscribe to this channel? This way our new videos will pop up in your feed as we add them. And it would be great, if you can click the “like” button on any particular videos because that will help other people find the information too.
