Please welcome my first guest to the Overdub Sessions videos, Mr. Jeramy Burchett. Jeramy is a drummer, producer, and songwriter based out of Portland, OR. Work brought him to Nashville, and while he was in town he was kind enough to hire me to play some parts on a track he is producing for artist Nate Botsford.
You can find Jeramy at:
prohibitionrec...
Jeramy also founded the social network exclusively for professional musicians called Session and stage:
sessionandstage....

Great fan of yours, but i totally concurred with Jeramy's suggestions here. He has an ear. Plus, you were able to easily go with how he was hearing it even though it wasnt always your natural instinct. Great stuff.

This raises a great point: often what we players throw out there as a first take is just a starting point for the two of us (player and producer) to hone in on the final part. I heard this song once, right before filming, as I wrote a quick chart. The producer has lived with this song for who knows how many hours as all the other parts and who knows how many vocal takes were recorded. This is true of overdub sessions as well as full band tracking sessions. Players hear the song once and begin throwing things at the wall. Producers have the final say for what sticks. And I always defer to someone who has spent far more time with the track thus far than myself.

A quick update. I like this song so much that I just bought the single on apple. I don't sign up to any streaming services, I like to buy the music that I like. Great song 👍

One thing I’ve noticed about these Nashville guys, is how there is no ego. There’s an open dialogue and they’re extremely nice to each other. If there’s a jerk in the studio, it can kill the vibe so fast. At least regarding my experience doing a few sessions. Love the collaboration between you guys.

Thank you so so much man. Your content is really great. And the perspective that you're giving of how to craft parts on a song is just awesome. This is what I was looking for to make me a better musician and a better session guy. Just great stuff!!! Greetings from Spain!

I'm kind of impressed that there are drummer producers. I don't think I know of many. Also I appreciate Artists allowing bits of their songs process to be on here.

Wonderful fly on the wall video. Stellar playing and a fine lesson on how to be proactive in suggesting ideas as well as taking in and implementing the client’s direction in a good natured, egoless way. Really appreciate all of your great content.

Another essential video for working players Justin! I’ve been telling all my guitar buddies and students to check the channel out. I’d love to see a video where you talk about your picking, the dynamics, how hard you’re hitting but it sounding really relaxed. I get the impression lots of the Nashville guys don’t use very heavy picks. Which coming from a Rock background I’ve always done, but find as a studio player doesn’t have the best tracking tone for me. All the best buddy and amazing work!

Thanks a ton, sir! Most everyone I know uses mediums. I’m using Planet Waves cortex 0.70. On acoustic, I’ll sometimes change to celluloid in 0.70 just for the smoother sound when strumming.

Thanks for the info Justin! That’s good to know. The medium pick freaks me out! 🤣 but I get it totally! I’m trying to convert as it’s definitely got the tone.. I’ve been using celluloids, I think the tone is great, but I’ll grab some of those planet waves and try! All the best buddy.

I'm watching this intently. This is what I'm asked to do each week when my band leader brings us a new song . . . gotta come up with rhythms and fills and leads that no one else in the band will be doing. (As an aside -- just got a Reverend Warhawk, p90 + humbucker and loving its sound and play.) Your tone in that intro is smooth and mellow. I'm imagining in my head a tone that cuts more, just as an alternative . . . I'll keep listening to see if you change into different tones at another point. :)

I intentionally stayed away from what might be more of a solo tone, because I wanted this to be more of a singable part.

What do these artists do when playing live, with so many guitar parts, pick and choose identifiable hooks?
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Жыл бұрын
Live is a different world. When I toured, it was my job to form one coherent part that covered all of the important stuff from the record. I would usually catch the intro lick, fills, and solo, but play rhythm in choruses.

What's with the headstock of this Jazzmaster? Is this not a Fender? Was it worked on?

@@JustinOstrander It looks and sounds beautiful! Actually, I like the shape of the headstock -- a bit like a '66 and after. Just got me a super lightweight Vintage II in Lake Placid. But now, I feel, my "Fenderism" found a closure. So next my "Jazzmaster" could be a Danocaster. It seems I buy one every 10 years about. Just chatting here... -- Thanks for everything you do on your channel!

This is why I hate tracking things live. The "how about it we try this" happens less or not at all.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree that overdubs allow you to focus on just your part, but when tracking with a band, you get the live in-the-moment interaction between players. And producers are always saying “how about we try this?” to the band. I enjoy both for sure. I really dig the live interaction of tracking with a band.
