My 1998 Honda Civic temp is raising similar to yours in the video, but only when I idled a few times at the drive through at my bank for about 5 minutes. The temp sits exactly where it's always been when I drive. Yesterday, I noticed that my heater took about 20 seconds to output heat, which never happened before. Also, I replaced the timing belt and water pump about 5 years ago, so I'm sure it's just the thermostat spring or its internal gasket going bad (not the outer gasket.) I ordered the Honda OEM thermostat (part #: 19301-PAA-306) and it should arrive Saturday. Thanks for the helpful video!

Check and make sure your radiator fans are coming on. Spend some time with it, and watch for the fans to come on when the car is idling for awhile. Usually if it starts to get hot at idle, but cools when driving, it's a flow problem. Either air flow or coolant flow.

Hi Sir, I have a Honda Civic 2004 and has the same problem like this on your video. but the thing is that when during start of the engine and while the temperature reach the half indicator, the cooling fan start to run and again stopped when temperature goes down a bit from the mid pointer needle and again the radiator fan run when temperature gauge started to reach the mid point gauge. and on the third time when temperature reach again the mid point, the fan doesn't run anymore and temperature gauge started to go beyond the mid point and still getting higher which forced me to shut - off the engine. What would it be the fault Sir? is it a Thermostat problem? My coolant is new and level is okay.

Well I have the same problem but my gauge goes up and doesn't go down. I fixed the tube it leaked coolant from (2nd time) and the other two times it fixed the problem but now it just overheats. There's no leaks or drips. It just overheats. Could it be the thermostat doing so?

@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 5 жыл бұрын
One of the switches turns on the fans, but I don't remember which one. I want to say it's the one to the left of the distributor, but it's been awhile. The other possibilities are of course the fans don't work or there's a wiring problem. But if you take a paper clip to the fan switch/temp switch...the one that turns the fans on. Disconnect the connector and jump the two pins from the wire harness. If the fans come on, then you know everything else is working, and the switch is likely bad

It'e pretty normal for a car that is overheating to run cooler with the heater on. That's not a symptom of what's wrong with your car. Lots of things could be wrong. Are the cooling fans working, is it low on coolant, is the radiator clogged, water pump working, blown head gasket? These are the things you need to verify to figure out what's causing the overheat.

Usually a blown head gasket will cause overheating at high RPMs. When the engine is cold, check the coolant for signs of engine oil or gas odor, and check the oil for signs of coolant.

Hey Mr I had the head gasket replaced along with the timing belt. Since then the car has been overheating. I've replaced the water pump, radiator, engine coolant temp. switch, & engine coolant temp. sensor. I left the thermostat out to allow more coolant flow and it STILL overheated. Could the exhaust system be a cause? I really don't know what else to do...
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Have you verified the cooling fans are working? Also, who did the head gasket? A shop or friend? Was the head machined when the gasket was replaced? Is there anything blocking air flow in front of the radiator? With everything else replaced, I would verify those things first, as well make sure the cooling system is bled properly, and there is no leaks. The heater should work normally at idle once the engine is warmed up. If not, then likely cooling system has air in it, and needs to bled, and leak checked. But you didn't mention the fans, so make sure both fans are working and will turn on when the engine is warmed up. Let me know what you find. Thx
@escdelesp
@escdelesp 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. I failed to mention I replaced the radiator fan motor and both fans are working properly. Also, the head was machined before being reinstalled. Nothing is blocking the air flow in front of the radiator. There are no leaks. Also, the water pump was replaced. And yes, a friend replaced the head gasket...with that said, there is no water vapor leaving the exhaust.
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 жыл бұрын
I don't doubt your friends skills, but It sounds like you've covered all the other bases. It might be worth doing a block test at the radiator to verify there are no hydrocarbons in the cooling system. As well as make sure there is no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. The only other thing I can say to check is coolant flow. Could there be a blockage somewhere? Maybe in the heater core or otherwise? If the head gasket was bad before, there could be all sort of goop built up, that if not flushed could decrease coolant flow. Also some head gaskets can be installed backwards, which usually means coolant passages get blocked. You never mentioned when it overheats. That's an important part of diag. Only at idle, only while under load, only with AC off, etc??
@escdelesp
@escdelesp 7 жыл бұрын
It wont overheat in idle but only takes a couple of minutes driving down the road at 30-40 mph for it to do so.

will a bad temp sensor cause over heating?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Roque Agasid No, but it could cause your gauge to not work correctly. Some cars, like this honda, will have a radiator fan switch. It looks just like a temp sensor, but it turns the radiator fan on when it gets to a certain temp. If that goes bad then you will experience overheating, because the fan will not come on.
@coffeedollsvp
@coffeedollsvp 8 жыл бұрын
+AppalachianDIY how do u know if waterpump is bad?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Roque Agasid Well if it's leaking from the weep hole, it is worn out and should be replaced. If it's not leaking, it's a bit more tricky. If you can get to the water pump easily, you can remove the belt and wiggle the water pump pulley. If there is any play in the water pump pulley, it's bad. If you cant get to the water pump, then you need to make an educated guess. Sometimes if the water pump is weak, you may notice the heater doesn't work well, or it only works when you're driving, but not at idle. However, a blown head gasket, or air in the cooling system can cause this too. Another thing to look for is, once the engine is completely warmed up, feel the upper and lower radiator hoses. If the lower hose is significantly colder than the upper, the water pump could be weak, and not efficiently moving coolant through the system. Be careful though, a stuck closed thermostat, or clogged radiator will show similar symptoms. Hopefully that helps. The water pump is tricky, but it will usually leak from the weep hole when it's time to replace it. Go through all the steps for overheat diag: Verify coolant level good, and no leaks, and NO AIR in the system. Make sure fans working Make sure thermostat is opening, and flow through system is not blocked. Make sure front of radiator is not blocked with debris, and cooling fins are OK. Check for hydrocarbons in the cooling system, or do leak down test, to check for blown head gasket

When the AC is on both fans should be on. Im not sure if they both come when the AC is not on, without looking at a wiring diagram. So check that first. If you keep driving it with only one fan you could blow the head gasket, if it's not already blown

It probably is working. Likely the slight over heating is caused by something else. With the thermostat removed, it sounds like it is offsetting that slight over heating. Make sure cooling fans are working. Check for leaks, check that there's no oily residue in radiator (head gasket problem). Check for coolant flow (if your heater works normally, coolant flow probably ok)

If the upper hose is really soft and swollen, and there is a oily film inside it...Also if you can see an oily film in the radiator overflow reservoir, there is a good chance the head gasket is blown. Did you verify your cooling fans are working?

JamesonDIY yes bro cooling fan tested and works fine ..sadly after a long research on forums I've found this : Re: Civic 02 strange Overheating Not to bump an old thread but I can confirm this is a head gasket issue. It's pretty common in this car. I was annoyed at this problem for months and months. Time finally came to replace the timing belt, which during this time the head was checked and machined. The problem has disappeared from the time this was done over 3 years ago. I could never completely bleed my cooling system. I thought I had all the air out and would let it idle for 10 more minutes, then as soon as I rev'd the engine, the water pump would force the combustion gases past the thermostat and I could smell and see them coming out of the radiator. Most cases you probably won't find coolant in the cylinders or anti-freeze in the oil, etc. They are failing in just the right area to allow the pressure from combustion to enter the cooling system at a low rate. I was constantly draining the reservoir and putting the coolant back into the radiator, only to have it pushed back out a couple weeks later.

Yeah, I have replace on a lot of head gaskets on Honda engines. It's usually obvious with the upper radiator hose. You can confirm with block tester (sometimes). But an experienced Honda tech will be able to tell pretty easily. Some times BluDevil Head gasket sealer will help with small head gasket leaks, but even if it helps, it's only a band aid and will eventually need to be fixed the right way.

What if the car overheats when the ac is on?
@AppalachianDIY

It is unlikely that turning the AC on causes the overheat. Especially cars with electric cooling fans, since they are turned on when the AC is switched on. But check the fans to make sure they are working properly. If it is not an electric cooling fan, check the fan clutch to make sure it has the proper resistance, and is not just free spinning. And the most overlooked thing: Check to make sure the front of the radiator and condenser is not blocked with leaves or some other debris.
