YES YES YES. NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Zip! And that's what killed me! I mean sure I'm sure there was the slightest bit, but I find that almost non existent! To me a story has to have character development, in some way. Even if at the end of the story the character is just left of from the beginning and is like "well, I now know that nothing is going to change" (hint: Hemingway) at least there is some substance! In LFA I found it so hard to connect with the characters. Most of the main characters I despised, and not in a good way. It wasn't like there was a villain like Voldemort or something that was supposed to be disliked but many people liked for being so bad. I just found John Green's characters as well.... Bad. I found it hard when I saw so many people love it though and it be all over tumblr. I don't read a lot of books and rarely do I buy them, so when I bought this one I thought it would be a hot for sure, but I ended up disliking it quite a lot..

Personally, John Green is great. But after reading quite a few of his books, all the characters feel kind of the same. They all have their own unique little thing and are so "I am different and that is cool." Yeah, these characters can be relatable, but from my experience a lot of them aren't. Don't kill me. All the books just kind of blend together. A lot of the plots feel a bit the same. We're always dealing with things in his books that we have already dealt with in his writing. I want something different from him! Why isn't Jandy Nelson a very popular ya author. She is amazing (and I personally think her work is more creative and realistic than John Green's). Sorry, I Had To Say it.

When I read a John Green book I feel like I am in the same universe as all his other books, but not in a good way. Super cliche plot lines and characters. A book that I feel much better expresses this theme is "The Schwa Was Here" by Neal Shusterman.

Totally agree with you on the whole John Green/manic pixie dream girl thing! I like his books, they're fine for what they are, but I have a lot of problems with his characters... I always hear people saying how "real" his characters are, but I don't see that at all. I have read all of his books but one, and have yet to find a character he has written who I have been able to relate to. Nobody talks like a John Green character. Literally nobody. I feel like all of his characters walked straight out of an angsty teen indie movie. It's annoying.

As much as I love John Green, I do agree with you here! John obviously believes that teenagers/young adults should be portrayed as intelligent and mature which I do agree with - I mean, we are, right? ;) However I sometimes feel like the language that he uses when his characters speak is just too alien to how we really speak. I'm not saying his characters should use slang and all that, but be a bit less "sesquipedalious" (I totally did that on purpose..!) I think they sound a little bit pretentious, that's all...and it does make it difficult to connect to them...
@sprinkleofhappiness98
@sprinkleofhappiness98 9 жыл бұрын
Omg! That exactly what I've been saying about his books! This is what I found annoying in TFIOS because while Hazel&Gus are pretty intelligent they're not realistically going to be using those words, plus it was infuriating as John Green woul kinda incorporate today's "lingo" into their dialogue but then this complex vocabulary which I felt kinda detached myself as a reader from the actual story (I kept looking up half the words in a dictionary lol) But I'm so glad someone has the same toughs as me! But I have gotta say I do love John Green's novel though, he just needs to tone the complex vocabulary down a little bit :P
@hippopajamas
@hippopajamas 9 жыл бұрын
I agree! Teenagers ARE intelligent and ARE capable of the kind of conversation John Green uses. But- in no way do we talk like that all the time. The smartest and most poetic teenager still lets loose a little bit and makes really stupid jokes and says small words. Not all characters have to be metaphors for something 100% of the time.

To me it felt like: "Hey, what are you doing?" "I go seek a great perhaps." "And dude what should that mean?" "If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." "?" "What you must understand about me is that I am a deeply unhappy person." And that's why I never finished Looking For Alaska. Loved it but also it felt a bit unrealistic about the talking and plenty of quotes.

I agree with Looking For Alaska and We Were Liars.. I will add to that list: Paper Towns by John Green (awful book), Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi (good first book and then downhill after that), the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout (too much teenage drama and ridiculousness), Rainbow Rowell - more specifically Eleanor & Park (everyone LOVES her books and I find them to be okay or pretty good. Eleanor & Park was boring), and Gayle Foreman - specifically If I Stay (her books end when they should begin - there's too much left out of them and it's never a satisfying conclusion).

+Jack Grimm They're all very different in their own ways, I think. But authors do tend to write very similar books over and over again, I would say :P It's sort of a product of being human and liking to do things a certain way? haha idk I bet someone could tell me an author's name who's infamously versatile. When you have thousands of people endorsing a book, my expectations tend to raise a bit...and that can make me not like a book at all, instead of just thinking its okay. Because when I go into it I expect it to be great.
@skfrench003
@skfrench003 9 жыл бұрын
HysteriCool I have the opposite reaction. When thousands of people are endorsing a book, I think "It has to be at least somewhat good if so many people like it. There has to be a reason for it." With an unknown book you take the full risk of feeling anything in the spectrum of love and hate for it, whereas if most people have positive opinions on it, I'm more likely to be somewhere closer to love on the spectrum.
@HysteriCool
@HysteriCool 9 жыл бұрын
Thats the thing though. having so many people endorse a book and rave about it makes me think its going to be the best thing since sliced bread. It pushes my expectations of it being amazing that much higher. And what can happen with that for me is, I'll be expecting it to get so great and good, all consuming and awesome...and it won't be and its that much more of a let down. Whereas if I don't hear any hype or w/e for a book, I go into it with a clean slate and it has a better chance to wow me. Hype for me sets the bar high for a book and if it doesn't meet or surpass that bar, then I'm going to be disappointed.

I wanna say that I'm sorry, but I'm not really sorry for feeling this way. But I actually wasn't that happy about "The Fault In Our Stars", everybody was like: "YOU ARE GONNA DIE, YOU'RE GONNA CRY SO MUCH, OMG IT'S LIKE THE BEST BOOK EVER" and I got very disappointed. It's an okay story, the characters were fine (I really liked Isaac though, he was great) but there never really seemed to be a climax, and that bothered me a lot. Waaaaay overhyped in my opinion.

Honestly as soon as I read the title I thought of a particular book that is probably gonna get me killed for mentioning it in that context xD Throne of Glass I only read the first book, so maybe it gets a lot better later on, but I was so disappointed. I expected a badass warrior assassin and got a whiny little girl. I expected battles, and an amazing tournament, and got castle rumours and complaints. I found the characters, especially Celeana (?), to be extremely flat. Liking books and killing people is not a character trait. Do these books really get that much better later on? Should I give it a chance? Or is it just not for me? Idk, for now I just prefer to read other fantasy, with characters I can actually connect to and where I don't count the pages.

So..... I completely agree with a lot of what you have said. I have found myself picking up books lately which really don't even interest me, but because of the 'hype' I bring them home to read (luckily for me, I get most of them from my work - public library). So, I have now made a conscious decision NOT to do this any longer. I am going back to reading the things I want to read and ignore the hype. I own over 1800 unread books - I don't have time to read books I am just meh about. Also, I am not watching so much booktube - it is saturated with YA and I want more variety and more adult, so am only watching my faves. (Can you tell you are one? Hehehe) Great vid as usual

I think the main issue with john green's books are that many people have never been in certain situations or felt certain things that pertain to his characters but they still like the characters because he writes them very well. However I've never had that issue, Looking For Alaska is my favorite john green book and I could relate to the characters 100% but I do see how many people wouldn't be able to handle that much crisis or never having a really full ending ♥

The two books/series I find overhyped are The Hunger Games, I tried giving it 3 shots, the first time I got 6 pages in, the 3rd time I got 45 pages in. I just really couldn't handle the writing, it wasn't doing it for me, I couldn't push past that. I felt like it was being narrated with the voice of a 12 year old, not a 16 year old and that bugged me. The second book I find overhyped is The Fault In Our Stars. I PERSONALLY didn't find it was a good book at all, though I appreciate the appeal and I can see how so many people love it. I just found too many problems in the book for my taste. So I'm not telling anyone that they have bad taste in books if they like these two, I'm just saying that they weren't my cup of tea! To each their own :)

How did I ever get through reading such things? I remember everyone raving about TFIOS, but I don't like the idea of main characters dying... the premise didn't really entice me and now, after getting 19 chapters in, just gave up. Was told I had to commit emotionally, and when I do that, the pain of a character dying is just too much and sticks with me for years (Still can't get over the death of Lynn's mum in Not a Drop to Drink -.-')

Books i think are overhyped: 1. The shatter me series- maybe thats just bc ive only read the first one and everybody says they get better, idk but the writing just seemed a little bit TOO much overdone and like metaphors in every sentence and its just like ok, we get it, move on. And the romance was too mushy and kind of insta-lovey. I'll probably read the rest of the series eventually but not any time soon. 2. If i stay. It was good but it wasn't mind-blowing in any way, like the plot was soooo predictable and i feel like the only thing it had going for it was that it was sad like ok congrats you can make me cry by telling me a story about ppl who die but nothing else really came out of that. I just kind of thought the whole choosing to live/die thing was kind of dumb, maybe bc i cannot relate to that at all like i cant imagine not wanting to keep living even in that situation.

You have a few I loved on your list, like Looking for Alaska but then...I read that way back when it first came out, before I'd read much YA, and at a different time in my life. If I'd read it now, who knows if I'd like it as much. I think timing is important with books. Overhyped books to me: - Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge (the writing was lovely and it was original, but beyond that it was kind of a mess with a narrator I didn't care for, but everyone else seems to love it) - Me, Earl & The Dying Girl (I just found it incredibly dull, didn't give a damn about the characters and literally can't think of anything nice to say about it except that the stylistic choices the author made were - interesting?) - Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler (it's a physically beautiful book but beyond being aesthetically pleasing, I'm not fond of the stream of consciousness narration and what could have been a great story was ruined by insta-love making it seem so painfully over dramatic)
@CaitlinVanasse
@CaitlinVanasse 9 жыл бұрын
Chiming in to say I totally agree about Cruel Beauty, it was good but, when it made it further than Half Bad (my favorite of the YA/MG debuts I've read this year) in the debut goodreads author category of the goodreads choice seats I was all "Whyyyyyy?" I also found Red Rising a bit over hyped. I haven't seen a lot of people hype Why We Broke Up. I think it's interesting the installation love turned you of since, to me, the book illustrated how a relationship can be built on illusion. That being said, it's not my favorite book ever or anything.
@lannapeanut
@lannapeanut 9 жыл бұрын
Caitlin Vanasse I'm a book blogger, so that may be why I saw more hype for Why We Broke Up (Cruel Beauty got a lot of hype from bloggers too), it wasn't hyped as much by the booktubers. I guess it was just... so many YA books do the whole insta-love thing anyway (often very poorly) that I was hoping for better from Daniel Handler. The reviews made it sound so much better, like it was this book most people would relate to about relationships falling apart. Instead we just get another insta-love book that makes the female character seem like an irrational drama queen with a pre-teen attitude to relationships (and it made no sense in the end because the reason they broke up was blatantly obvious and not relating to her box of reasons really). ...Sorry, that morphed from clarification into a rant about the book (which, for the record, I rated 3 stars so I didn't hate it exactly). I'll need to check out Half Bad. :P

I totally agree! Timing is everything with books, I find. There are some books now that I just can't be bothered to use my money on but I know if I were younger I'd pick them up in a heartbeat. Re: Why We Broke Up- I picked that up on a whim, not knowing any feedback on it. It REALLY broke my heart -- so much that I wanted to slaughter the protag and burn the book LOL so I hafta give props to Daniel Handler for inducing such feels in me. Not totally defending it or anything. I just think it's great how we differ in opinions. Just goes to show that a book isn't necessarily for everyone just because it's so "in" and stuff (like fashion trends!)

lannapeanut I think I gave it 3 stars too but... I didn't think it was a typical love/break-up story by any means. Odd that's the way the hype trended. I feel like I should disclaimer my Half Bad love by saying it's gotten a love/hate kind of vibe so, I really liked it but I don't want to hype it too much for you. Also, timing IS everything, definitely. I like to think there are some books out there that will be amazing whenever they're read (Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta, I'm looking at you) but others are certainly affected by what else you've read or what's going on in your life. On Goodreads I can almost always explain why a book got 4 stars over 3 but explaining why my 5 star books are 5 star? purely personal.

I think Looking for Alaska is also possibly a 4-star book for me, though I haven't read it in a long time...I prefer An Abundance of Katherines and his other books, but like I said, I haven't read it in several years. Probably need to get on that. Thanks for making this video, though! As far as my own personal overrated books, I honestly can't think of a ton? I haven't read a lot of the super-hyped YA stuff recently, so maybe that's why. I definitely didn't like Legend as much as a lot of people, though, and I haven't continued on to the rest of the series.

Ha, I think you're right about the twist in We Were Liars being obvious because I guessed it and I never ever guess things like that right. I think one of the reasons I liked the book so much is because when I finished it I was like "woo, I guessed it right" and it felt good haha

I started watching Hank and John Green in 2009 and I devoured John Green's books. I even pre-ordered The Fault in Our Stars. I loved his books so much when I was a teenager--before I was a feminist, before I had my first college literature class, before I had my first writing workshop, before I became a fully formed person with thoughts and opinions of my own. I'm thankful to him for giving me something decent to read at the time, but honestly, I wouldn't own one of his books, I wouldn't buy one of them, and I definitely wouldn't read one again. His characters and themes are contrived and cishet-white-male-centric. We have enough media (especially literature) dedicated to cishet white men and his tiresome outlook on life can't seem to break free of the constraints of his station in society. He adds nothing to the genre, therefore he's a fluff writer of books only fit for kids who need something trashy to read at the beach. I hear Looking for Alaska was a satire on the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, or maybe it was Paper Towns, but either way, every novel of his contains a MPDG or a MPDB and it's just perpetuating existing harmful stereotypes of women and girls. Satire is great unless you're a person of privilege trying to write it about someone who doesn't have your privilege (like Tina Fey and her horribly racist writing on 30 Rock). Overall, I just don't like his books. He's a good writer, but he perpetuates harmful ways of thinking and he's overhyped as an author whether it's Looking for Alaska or The Fault in Our Stars.

People are going to hate ne for this but I personally think that Allegiant was kind of overhyped. I loved Divergent and Insurgent was pretty good but it was particularly hard for me to get into Allegiant. Usually it's easy for me to remember the details of the books I read. I still remember what happens in all the books I've read but not Allegiant? A lot of fighting between Four and Tris happened in the book and all that but literally the only thing I can remember perfectly was the plot twist. whoop :(

For me, it's pretty much all of these YA dystopian future books, the Hunger Games and its wannabes. I just find them really pretentious, and difficult to connect with because they're just so pessimist and downbeat, but I don't think they have much reason to be because there isn't much realism or anything. It's not like 1984 or Brave New World where the author was REALLY thinking about the possibilities of this world being real. I do NOT like Divergent at all. Nothing felt real, not the emotion, not the action, not the world, it just didn't make me feel anything. Although Veronica Roth is someone to be admired because she's a bestseller and has a lot of fans, I don't think you can call her a GREAT author. It's no coincidence that Divergent was published when the Hunger Games was HUGE. I don't think Divergent stands on it's own. Generally, the best fiction sets trends, rather than follows them.

I mean to be extremely polite but I love these books u r talking about . I can't say I am speaking for every teen but some to most ppl I know who read these book whether or not they realise this is they read it to loose themselves from reality (which is not always pleasant) maybe to just remind themselves that things could be worse and I completely disagree on how they lack "real" emotion or whatever like clearly thousands of ppl who read it didn't pour themselves into it, didn't live and die with the charecters. its not like we didn't nearly die with the end of allegiant

I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone in 2012 and I also thought it was kind of meh and I got annoyed with some characters. BUT I then read the second one Days of Blood and Starlight this summer and I absolutely loved it. I immediately picked up the third one and the writing is so beautiful in it and made the trilogy an immediate favourite. Sometimes I think you just need some time away from those kind of books and I didn't re read Daughter of Smoke and Bone, just dived into the second one and I think this helped.

Great video! I don't really read YA but everyone and their mother was telling me to read The Fault In Our Stars so I did. I think it was very overhyped. To be fair I had recently read The Emperor of All Maladies, a kind of biography of cancer. It reads as a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist and that was a stunning, magnificent novel. In comparison TFIOS felt (don't kill me) cheap. 2/5 stars.
