Great video, I hope this inspires others to do something similar instead of leaving it out on the ground. On another note, we (my wife and I) use the old tried and true 5 gallon bucket with a trash bag and seat. We line the bag with 2 diapers, and fill a portion with a bit of kitty litter. And have several bags made inside of the toilet, that way when your done you pull the innermost one and have a fresh bag. We also use a coffee can that holds the poop tickets and a tad bit more kitty litter. We do have a privacy/shower tent. But we rarely use it. Since it's usually just us we keep in the annex. There isn't any smell to the tent, and it eliminates the need for a separate tent. We also have a trasharoo and similar steps are taken to keep everything sanitary. Thanks again for sharing this will, it's great content to share in hopes that not only do we keep public lands cleaner, but also make the trip out there a bit more comfortable.

Really great info here! If you have room I think the bucket seat is sometimes more comfortable than the Reliance seat - because it sits higher off the ground. We stopped using an annex when we got the new tent because it's 2X bigger and bulkier that our old one...but I was never tempted to put the bathroom in there...it sounds like you figured out how to do it in a way that's pretty clean though. Thanks for taking the time to share this. Pack in pack out - pass it on!!!!!

Several years ago on a guided climb of Mt Shasta we were issued brown paper bags for pooping. Inside was a 1 gallon ziplok bag and a 1 quart ziplok bag with kitty litter. The process was to tear open the brown bag and lay it flat. The inside of the bag was printed with a bullseye target. Someone had a sense of humor. You did your business on the target, then sprinkled the kitty litter from the 1 quart ziplok bag on the "material", roll up target bag with "material", and put in the 1 gallon ziplok bag. Done. You could make adjustments for vehicle travel. Nothing more disgusting than finding a camp spot, letting the dogs out until they find the previous person's "material" laying on the ground. I call this person Richard Head. If you use standard slang for the first name you'll see why I use this term.

Cool vid, yup, we all have to do it! Need to talk about it much more especially if you're new to dispersed camping / overlanding. Best is to pack it out. We use a porta-pottie (chemical toilet) and a privacy cubicle attached to the vehicle. Most common question usually is why right next to the vehicle, surely you want the cubicle further away. Well in the middle of the night I don't want to navigate hungry critters (i.e. lions, hyenas) on the way to the loo 😉

Back in the day when Overlanding was called 'Camping' and we didn't have all of these new products (which are way cool and helps get my wife out there) I took an old folding camp chair and mounted a toilet seat on hinges (so it still folded) and would dig a small pit place a small kitchen back in the pit and do our business. Now we have a similar set-up and I feel like it is Glamping but so much nicer in the winter hunting in the high country - yup I am spoiled now.... Thanks for the video - well done..
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam 2 жыл бұрын
It's OK to be a little spoiled when your out there...especially since this set up is one of the rare things in Overlanding that doesn't cost an arm and a leg! I think it takes someone who's dug holes to truly understand the luxury of this fairly rustic setup lol...it's so cool to hear your wife is getting out with you too. This is interesting. Going to be honest, the way we've been camping, we've been digging catholes backpacking style for years now. We just never are around other people, always have a shovel, taught the kids to dig holes as well since we're backpackers and pack out the TP. But recently, we decided to camp along the south fork. (talk about crowds of people) And for the first time ever, there was really no where private from the road to scurry off to and dig a hole. And this presented a challenge, since we have no shelter for this with the girls. I couldn't find a suttble location. Luckily where I chose to setup about 500yrds was one of those horse camps with a pit toliet, so I made them walk down the road. But it got me thinking about this topic. Especially since I haven't really taken them camping in the desert. It's one thing for you and your buddies and be like "Yo I'm digging a hole in front of my truck" - it's another to be out with wives and kids and other peoples wives and kids. This is def a setup we need to start incorperating. I've always applied my minimilist backpacking experince to my overlanding (which is why I always make fun of other dudes with overloaded Tacomas about how much gear you really need :P ) but alias, this is something I need to tackle now.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment! There's nothing wrong with digging a hole..in fact, walking away from camp to get privacy is probably a better practice in terms of keeping wild animals out of camp. I like just having this stuff in the spare tire bag, so it's always there if we need it...which isn't 100% of the time...but with kids, I've found it to be a really nice set up, so they have privacy...we use the Wolfwise tent as a shower tent too..so that's been a nice secondary use as well. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and perspective here - I really think it will help folks out who are reading the comments!
