First impressions, and regrets after building an overland camping rig in my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in 2024! There's a lot of great things with the new Jeep Gladiator build, but I'd make a few changes if I had to do it again. Here's what I'd do differently if I had to start over.

I went with the Gladiator with only two people. Plenty of room for camping stuff, but my main decision was I won't go off road crazy and it will still go over most stuff. I also went with an inflatable mattress for the bed and a truck bed tent over it (which takes up no room broken down) instead of a rack to hold a roof top ladder tent. Way more room IMO.

Good video! I have a family of 5 as well. We went from a JKU to a Gladiator Mojave. I decided to keep things simple. Got a MOPAR tonneau cover and everything we take with us fits in the bed and is out of sight. I did think about the drawer system but decided against it because of the space issues you mentioned. Overall, really loving the Gladiator. Happy travels!

Decked is heavy, and takes up tons of bed space. They are well built, and tough, but more appropriate for a work truck than an already heavy overland build.

If I was going to do my build over again, I would have gone with a soft topper and tent extender attachment. Could probably do that for $1500 to $1600 all in. It would be way lighter than my rack and rooftop tent. I like my rooftop tent, but for anything in regular campgrounds, it sucks because most parks don't let you pull onto the actual site. You're stuck on the parking pad. Also, some campgrounds want to charge you a trailer/camper fee instead of a tent site fee. Kind of a pain in the butt. Out west, where there is plenty of back country camping and BLM land, the rooftop tent is the way to go. East of the Mississippi, it is more of a pain in the ass, and more weight on the truck that rarely gets used.

I feel you man! I miss my rebel the room it had was absolutely amazing and it was also pretty capable for what I did. But hey we learn to live, let’s enjoy the gladiator! It’s an amazing rig! I think a canopy would fix solutions for a family! That’s what I’m going to do

For the cost of the decked drawer system and rack, one could instead almost pay for a heavy duty canopy that would provide a lot of dry, secure storage. Then mount a hard shell tent on top of the canopy. A canopy and roof tent is the best use of space. If more cargo carrying space is needed, a hitch mounted cargo carrier with 500 pound rating can hold a large trunk or ice chest strapped or locked down with cable or chain and padlocks.

After owning and enjoying a 2010 JKU for 11 years, the Gladiator was a big improvement for what I need in a "jack of all trades" vehicle. At one point I had the JKU and an F150, now I have the best parts of both in one. Towing capacity was very important Andy Sport S max tow at 7650 lbs gets it done. I would like to give it some overlanding features so your experience and feedback on your JT is very insightful. Looking forward to more videos.

Just sell the bed rack while its still new. Might sell it for $300 and get a sealed bed cover instead or the one with a pop up tent. Safe for your equipment.

Use pieces of large Uni-Strut to raise the Rack and spread/distribute the load across the rack

I have thought about this recently. I also think about using some to make a slide to hang a full size table from the top of the rack. Two c channels the proper width apart might work.

RTT are overrated! I’m back to a ground tent. A nice ground tent that is!

I could see a RTT for up to 2 people, I definitely don't see a RTT doing anything for a family of 5. I am single with no kids, I think it will be great.

the wheelbase is what makes the turn radius so much larger than a wrangler.

I’m still working it out. I’m planning rooftop tent, and traditional tent. That way I have the RTT for solo travel. I’m mildly considering a trailer, but they are very expensive.
