I wasn't planning on corner armor but here we are!
In my opinion it is very important to stay flexible when metal fabricating. This tire carrier is a great example of how plans change along the way and if you can stay flexible you can continue to move forward in your project! Tire carriers of this type have many moving puzzle pieces that need to fit together tightly. We have multiple hinges, latches and mounting locations in this project. These pieces all need to mesh together and ensuring proper fitment every step of the way is paramount.
My recommendation to any beginner looking at attempting a metal fabrication project like this is to take your time and work through these challenges patiently. If you compartmentalize each piece then a project of this size is much less intimidating just time consuming.
With right tools, attitude and planning you can do projects like this. Until then enjoy the videos! I have many more overlanding specific DIY projects on the way and I look forward to sharing the next video with you guys!
Stay Creative!

Union sheet metal fabricator here, that at-home press-break is very cool, but when your forming panels for finish work (i.e., stuff you're going to have visible on the exterior of your Disco), you should use a "rubber" (just a flat 0.03 or 0.015 thick rubber strip, comes in rolls) on the V-die, this will minimize back-breaks & other visible blemishes. Cheers & keep up the great work/great content!

In order to stabilize the butt welds for the tire loop you might consider removing the gussets and building a small tray. Use the support structure of the tray to beef up and stabilize the welds. You can add the gussets in between the tubes for additional support. With weight being a consideration, use the tray to hold something light like a .50 cal ammo can that stores your tow strap. Creates space for necessities that now has ease of access. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos. Brian

Nate, sit in the driver's seat and look at the rear view mirror. The tire should move to the left as far as possible to improve rear view. It will also make the tire swing a little shorter, it's really long and bouncy now. You could add a short swing to the right side for jerry cans or a ladder, the way that Land Cruisers are set up. Keep up the great work, your channel is the best thing on these days.

Nate, great progress on the bumper thus far. I will say on thing, that deflection and bouncing will only exacerbate as you drive and then go off-road. I hate to say it, but it may be worth some time rethinking the swing gate, and removing that movement. Overall however, I love where you are heading with this, and the look is getting to be spot on. Keep up the good work brother!!!

The build is coming out badass!! I know what you mean, building a one of a kind swing out takes time, especially when you don't have a drawing for it. That's how it was for me, so I don't mind for the extra parts for your builds. The EMS parts are great products. I built my dual swingout on the Smittybilt M1 bumper for my FJ Cruiser. I built it to where my cooler swings out first and then my tire swings out with my door, because I wasn't sure how much stress the 35's would be on the spindle. Keep up the badass work and can't wait to see the final product 🤙🏽

Don’t sweat the series length, bumpers take time because you’re engineering as you go, sometimes I stop for a half hr or better to just stare and plan the next step. Bumpers and racks have to be pleasing to the eye, they take time to get just right.... plus you’re slinging cameras while working too! People always seem to be critical of creative persons, don’t let it bother you, that’s the beauty of building things for yourself, you get them exactly how YOU want them. Keep up the great work!

Nate, really cool work. What some people do not understand is that creating has a definite process. Sometimes stuff happens that you did not consider early in the process. As a designer myself, that is why there are revisions! The difference between what you post on KZfaq and what others post is that you show the progression from idea to final product. There are loads of you tubers that only show what works. Not the 5 times that they had to make adjustments. A little long winded comment. But just wanted to say most of us viewers appreciate the reality of this kind of work.

I really like where this bumper is going and it is giving me a lot of ideas for my own project. One potential method of relieving the stress on the butt welds would be to hole saw through the top of the square tube you used as the swingarm and insert the tubes for the tire carrier down into the swingarm. You could then weld around the vertical tubes where they protrude out of the swing arm and in addition plug weld from the front and back on each of the tubes and potentially from the bottom with some small holes drilled in the swing arm prior to inserting the upright bars. The leverage itself would help dissipate against the internal wall of the square tube and you would not need to worry about a butt weld holding the entire weight. In order to not redo everything at this point, you could hole saw from the bottom of the swing arm very precisely directly under the vertical bars and add in slugs the will tightly fit into the vertical tube. You could then plug weld those slugs into the uprights and the swing arm and cap it when you are finished.

Tire carrier support suggestion, rubber bumper/stopper up high for the top of the hoop to rest against when it's fully closed and/or a magnet. The rubber bumper would help reduce and swap and the magnet would stop it from swaying to the back and wouldn't add another step/latch to open

Nate, awesome fab again bud. I know you’re looking to remove the flex from the tire mount, the simple way is to come down from the swing arm with flat plate and connect to the bumper with an additional latch, this will add torsion stability under the swing arm and really reduce the flex in the carrier 👍 Hope this helps and keep up the content..

@@DirtLifestyle Another idea Nate given where you are now is... 1-1/2" holesaw from the bottom, thru the crossbar and slide in a piece of 1-1/2" DOM and sleeve it like an axle tube. Shouldn't be too hard once you set centers and you don't have to lop everything already welded to the crossmember.

Good stuff Nate! It would add another step when opening but I wonder if the top of that hoop can/ should be latched to something anchored to the door, like the ladder for example. Of course, it might introduce vibration into the body and all kinds of other new problems to solve so take the suggestion with a grain of salt. As an architect, I learn as much from watching your design and problem solving process as I do from the actual fabrication. Thank you for your generosity!

I see why you mounted it that way...nice idea. The over-centre catch you've put on the end...someone is going to walk into that why not put a 'hasp & staple' type catch on, it'll kill several birds with one stone, the staple on the end of the carrier, less to walk into as it won't stick out. When closed a padlock through it (I'd suggest one of the square type ones) and a hole in the staple to take an 'R' clip so that you can fasten it shut without the padlock on. keep up the fabrication it's great TTFN.

When I built my tire carrier I had the same problem. It was a TJ but I ended up using the factory tire bumpers. Just extended the hoop to add slight pressure to the carrier when closed. Since that is the configuration it is mostly used and sees the greatest vibration. Also it hid the connection and eliminates all rattling. Win win win!!!

I like the build. Love the Landy in general. I may have a tip for you. I build alot of these bumpers, mostly for for UTEs. But i live in Namibia, and gravel roads are harsh. So for the swing arm, make a stepper plate at the end of the arm, then rotate the locker latch so that it can pull the arm slightly down. This will help for some of the wobble on the spare wheel

Awesome work Nate, Watching your vids gave me big confidence boost, and now I'm in process of axle swapping Jeep XJ, with '96 Nissan Patrol Diffs with Long arms front and back. Thanks !

that spare tire is bouncing a lot just closing the arm. I hope you have a way to make that more solid so it doesn't do that when offroad.

Hey Nate, love how you have to open the carrier to get the max traxx off. Makes them that much harder to steal 😂. Seriously though, this build rocks as usual. Keep up the good work.

I wish you would stop apologizing for making extra great videos for us to watch. Make as many videos as it takes to get it right. We enjoy watching them or we would find another channel.

Nate, I use the same locking pin on the tire carrier I made for my GX470. When I built mine, I had the pin slide on a 1/4" plate topped with a thin piece of stainless for friction and a hole at the "full open" point for the pin to fall into. It works well and I don't have to do anything with it to allow it to lock open. I hope this make sense. Keep up the good work!

Love the way this bumper is turned out! Looks great and I love the full kitchen functionality when it's open. One thing that I noticed is that the tire is shaking back and forth when you close the carrier gate. Might get violent rocking on trail bumps.

I agree that the second beauty plates simpler design suits the Discos look much better, but now I'm going to be watching out for the first one appearing in a future project 😂

Hey Nate, love the content. This build is truly amazing from the day you got it. I thought of an idea about shoring up the tire carrier. What if you cut the but welds off, drilled 2 holes for the hoops and reassessed them into the cross bar. You could weld it on the top, and also drill all the way through and weld that up and grind it smooth for the finish. Then technically it would be welded in 2 spots per bar, and also would be supported for forward and backward movement going down the trail. Just an idea! Keep up the work man! 👍🏻

Hey man, don't worry about how long or how many videos this project is going. You're in a creative zone to build this bumper, carrier, and accessories the way that'll look good and work best for your purposes.. If it takes a few extra videos, well, bummer you'll have to edit those for us. I'm not complaining. Have enjoyed your content and what you do since discovering you on BJ, and quite excited I discovered your personal channel after leaving there. Unfortunately for the first time in my life have a decent size garage, a plethora of tools, and a lot of spare time to build cool stuff.. Just don't have the money anymore as the aforementioned changes consume my disposable income now... So I have to build vicariously though you all. 👍

You must plan on doing some serious wheeling if you need corner armor. lol I like the idea of strengthening the bumper by adding corner protection. I would like to cut and fold the rear quarters on my XJ but would want something like you added to really protect everything. Its probably overkill but its nice to have more clearance and add strength to the bumper at the same time. Remember, the haters are going to hate. lol I like the way you called him out. I try to be positive when I comment on KZfaq.

Great build something I have wanted for my fj cruiser. Seeing your door addition is where I am going to start. Nobody makes a bumper like this for the fj cruiser they all open with the door. Great job enjoying the builds.

Take your time and keep up the good work! Not sure if the rectangular tubing is wide enough, and it also might add a bunch of extra time, but using a hole saw to drill a hole down the top of the swing arm to drop the tubing in should do the trick for stiffening up that area once welded. Hopefully, that made sense.

To strengthen the joint, I might add a return flange that runs out the rear of the tube (side the tire is on) and down the rear of square stock. Something nice and thick to resist flexing. Maybe a rib of thinner folded steel at the narrowest angle your bender will make.
