Lets talk about overland vehicle awnings! A couple things to ask yourself when looking into getting an awning for yourself. Do you need one? What makes a good awning for overlanding, hardware, easy setup, longevity, etc. and is it long enough to cover your work space? Which side of the vehicle should you mount it on and does it work with your roof rack? We hope this information helps and let us know if you have any recommendations or tips of your own! As always, keep the comments constructive and we look forward to learning from you! Thanks! #overlanding #overlandawnings #xoverland

All good points. I don’t use my awning as much as I thought I would, but like you said, when you need it or want it, an awning is invaluable.

Almost done with building my own side awning. I know the adage is "buy once, cry once", but I like to tinker and I simply wanted to try my hand at it. As a small budget overlander, $100 and a couple hours of time to build it was worth it to me. Either way, you're absolutely right in saying that it is NOT a necessity. But, I'm looking forward to having easy shade and rain cover from now on.

I run an ARB 2000 on the passenger side of my Tacoma. I agree, get something that the manufacturer makes all pieces, it helps with uniformity with attachment to the roof rack and simplicity with repairs. Also we have the room that attaches to awning...a great place to hang in buggy areas like the southeast!

I just recently bought a 62" 23zero coolabah awning and so far it's been great. It didn't break the bank, is super lightweight and mounts to the factory roof rack very easy. It's a key component for me doing most of my camping in the desert.

I run an ARB 2000 on the passenger side of my 2004 TJ. Honestly between it and the awning room that I purchased with it, it is probably the best mod that I have installed on my Jeep.

I have the 2000 with the awning room too on a Tacoma. I use it mainly to sleep when I win an argument with my wife - meaning I have to sleep in the awning room and she gets the roof top tent :(

I'm 'Down Under' and use a 3x3m freestanding gazebo (like a pit tent for MX racers) which allows me to back the rear of the LC200 into it and open the rear door fully. This is great as when I need to drive out nothing is attached. I also add a wall to the passenger side to block wind which allows me to cook and work out of my ARB draw system area pretty comfortably. My buddy also uses a 3x3 for general cooking area for camp and we roll out the awnings to keep the dew off our swags.

Informative video. My truck also has the Eezi-Awn 270 degree awning. It is a terrific investment and it becomes a haven during group camping trips. Everyone loves a nice awning.

I have a Guana Equipment 270* awning and love it. I couldn’t agree more Clay with ease of setup and cost. The awnings like the Eeze are very nice but a bit heavier than the style I have. With that said, the style like Eeze is hard to beat. No matter though, I’d say get an awning before a RTT. Shelter while doing basic kitchen prep, socializing or sheltering from the weather, an awning would be a great addition to anyone’s base camp.

I have eezi awn, and the stealth 2000, initially I didn't like it for setup with how much wind we have here. I got a Darche 180, which I really liked, but ended up taking it off of my rig (2017 land cruiser). When the rig would hit bumps you could feel the awning pulling it to the side it is on (passenger). I'm giving it to a buddy's son, who has a LC 80, which it should be just fine with his rig. I again have the Stealth installed and have just learned to live with setup.

hey!! gotta say been watching your videos for a while now luv them im some what new to this so........ as far as awnings go i did alot of research and ended up buying hills offroad gear 270 and xl tent im very happy with them , only used a couple times so far im running a 89 suburban and its intresting what you said about mounting location i was building my roof rack from scratch and mounted awning like 4 times because of clearance issues with barn doors and the way tent opens i wanted to keep it as low and tight to truck as possible ,but barn doors do not swing straight they have a some weird arc to them oh well, it turned out pretty cool and totally functional, just have to watch in tight locations if anyone has suburban questions i would be happy to help

Has anyone ran an awning over the back of a 4Runner? I know there are some that would arc over the opened hatch. Just not sure if it would be necessary. Thinking that would eventually be my galley area. Exp Ovrlnd, did you guys every set anything up over the back of Rufio? I don't recall seeing that. REALLY appreciate everything you do and sharing your expertise with the rest of us!!

Mudduck's 4wd Touring Hey Mudduck, when you say “wing awning”, are you referring to a 270 degree? If so, how does it work with the lift gate of the LC? I have an LX570 and think the spoiler would be a major issue. Thanks.

@@MarkKFerguson Hi mate, yep a 270 degree awning. The bar on the awning misses the wing on my 200 as the roof rack is far enough forward to clear, you can see it on my channel if you want to check it out. Cheers Steve

Hey guys, long time fan & viewer (2015 ish). I think i have an interesting idea for a video. Now that you all collectively have accumulated so much knowledge and experience regarding overlanding / offroading, you guys should do an "entry level" or super "budget" overland build vehicle that can be daily driven. I would say most people have around $20k to spend on a used vehicle, so maybe that's the budget, something $25k all in to go on week long trips at max. What would you guys skimp out on, what would you ball out on? I think this would be interesting to see, and could help more beginners get into this great pastime!

I really like these ancillary, instructional videos. They are a great filler between your adventures. However, every time I watch one, I can't help thinking "when are we going to see the Greenland film?" and "when are you going to Africa?"

Like you said, shades shade. We personally like to put our bigger dollar elsewhere. We have a video review on the non-named $120 eBay/Amazon awnings. We have 2 and the first one has held up well for going on 3 years now. It’s not the quality of the name brands but it does the job at a good value. We’re trying to think through the best solution for covering a slide out kitchen in the back of our rig. A batwing would be nice but, like you mentioned, our raised tailgate would hit it. Limited options there. Anyone have a good solution?

All good points! I am in the market for a 270 degree for my truck camper. The truck camper is a Palomino SS-1250 popup. I am looking at different ways to mount it just below the popup portion. I am considering the awning by 4 wheel camper as it seems to be very easy to setup and is designed for popup campers. What say you? Any good advise? Looking to pay around 1200-1500 for it.
