Using a phone on the train was a real novelty, something totally new. Going through the Poro-o-tarau tunnel was something new too. I'd taken trains through the old tunnel which was affectionately called the rat hole because of its size. In the steam days engine crews had to put wet cloths over their face to be able to breathe and even on the diesels the exhaust fumes in the cab was uncomfortable.
