So, just FYI, this was supposed to come out on Sunday but apparently I don't understand calendars. Or, it could be that something happened thanks to the new "Join" button on the videos which gives subscribers early access to the videos, haha. So, sorry if that confused any of you that follow the podcast regularly! The audio version will drop Sunday like normal. Enjoy this a little earlier!

As you have said ,set out your goals . Having run an H3 hummer and being retired . My goal was good gas economy and range . Second goal was capability . Third goal dependability .So this is my set up for now .Maverick Tremor -full bed rug -home made slide out drawers . Soft topper -extrusion rack- free spirit RTT- ARB awning. Of course there is much more. But this is a fun and affordable set up for my needs . The biggest threat to overlanding is all these content creators that make us think we need to spend 150 thousand or more ,like they did purchasing and outfitting are vehicles . Thanks for keeping it real .

Haha, you're right you know, :D. I'm constantly drawn in by other content creators and wanting to buy all the things, but then I make videos like this to keep myself grounded. I also have a wife that won't let me buy all those things, so that helps, haha.

I never tough i would buy a full size suv but here i am with an 02 Sequoia. Before i had an 02 Xterra and for a little while used my awd rav4. I mainly travel the baja peninsula and i've been thru enough down here to know what i need and don't need in a vehicle, although i sacrificed mpg's and capability i gained a ton of space for my gear, i can sleep very comfortably inside and i have an almost bullet proof V8, it is still very capable with a locking central diff and for remote camping it is perfect i don't need nor want a dedicated rock crawler. I still have my rav4 as a daily so the 13-15mpg don't hit as hard 😅.

Great video. I'm in the process of planning out my next steps for a vehicle. I bought an '03 Liberty from a good friend of mine for $500 back at the end of '21 in great condition. Had no plans of off-roading until I started watching videos of "how to go camping with a toddler" in prep of camping with my art the time young toddler. Next thing i knew I stumbled upon "overland" videos and says wait i technically have a Jeep lol. 2.5 inch lift 32 inch tires, 2 years and now 2 kids later it's become the family adventure rig but getting tight on space. I'm so torn on what to get next! I really want a Wrangler since it'll take minimal work for a bump in off-road capabilities and decent used JKs are pretty affordable now, but i worry about reliability and overall space. I'm leaning really heavily on a Frontier PX4 since it'll be pretty capable and tons of family storage space with the bed, plus its near Toyota reliability. But, i really want a Wrangler lol. Decisions decisions 😩🫠

That is a tough one for sure. The Jeeps are so capable and some people get a ton of miles out of them, but I also know people that spend thousands in maintenance and fixes, so that's why I'm locked in on Nissan. Keep in mind that the Frontier cab area won't be much bigger (if it is bigger) than your liberty, but you'll have a full bed to shift gear to plus you could add a bed rack of course or cap. Good luck with whatever you end up with!

I think the 4Runner is probably one of the best also reliability and daily driver

I love 4Runners. I looked at them when I first bought my original "overlander" which was an Xterra. I was finding 4Runners that were 3-5 years older with 1.5-2x the miles of the Xterras I found that still cost 30-40% more than the Xterra I bought. I think they're great trucks and that's why they hold their value so well, but for me at the time, saving $4K and getting an Xterra with 94K miles instead of 150-180K like the 4Runners I was seeing meant I got a lower mileage, newer Nissan with money left over to buy mods so that made my decision for me. Again though, if I had chosen a 4Runner, I have no doubt it would have been a great truck too. Lots of factors go into these decisions so there's a lot to think about when picking something!

My master plan was was buy a Subaru that's super efficient but pretty darn capable and then make friends with guys who want to join me on trucks to haul the stuff I can't fit in my Subaru!! 😂

If I was buying a midsize it would be a Ford Ranger Raptor.

@@AllThingsOverlanding Yea, they are. I’m looking at rear AND front lockers, mild lift, bigger tires, more payload out of the box for all that stuff people like putting in the bed, more towing capacity for those “off-road” trailers, more horsepower, torque AND better mpg’s!? By that time it’s even steven.

Sadly every vehicle has strong points and compromises as to comfort, capability, payload, etc. and we really are left with making the best choice for our perceived needs. When I am sleeping or it is freezing I want an EarthRoamer, when on trails my JKU Rubicon (or maybe a JK Rubicon is better), when I am doing the long highway stints between destinations a full size PU getting 25-30 MPG would be nice. If I could I would have a machine shop full of choices and pick the right one for each trip but that not an option for the vast majority of us so I am left with choosing as best I can and making the adjustments as needed. I try to remember those pioneers in the overland world such as the Turtle Expedition or those that covered the globe in vintage LRs and try to decide if I really need something.
