After a 6 month break in camping (R.I.P. to our sweet cat Pepper), we're back on the road looking for some chillingly beautiful winter scenery in California's deserts, and boy we sure found what we asked for... This story will be split into 3 parts to keep the run length reasonable, this is Part One.

Thanks for the details! How did you decide on the XC60 vs the Volvo wagons, either the V90 CC or V60 CC? Thanks!

The wagons at most only have air suspension for the rear (for leveling), not all 4 corners for ground clearence, so the choice was straightforward at that point.

Bought the heated sleeping pad. Haven’t tried it out yet. I figure if it’s cold enough for the heater then it’s cold enough not to have to keep my cooler plugged in over night. Hope my Rockpals 350 battery will have enough juice to keep us warm.

I agree though I doubt you actually need to unplug the cooler, with it so cold it should basically never cycle the compressor and therefore have negligible power draw. 350wh is a little small, but if you focus use on prime times (fire it up just before bed, during mid-night breaks, and maybe in the morning as desired) you won't need nearly as much as letting it run all night.

hello, how's the wind resistant on the highway? did you notice some flexing on the cross bar? thanks

Never had any flexing issues, either with the current bars (Yakima HD) or the factory Volvo bars (rated for 100Kg dynamic load). That being said, always do check that they are tight after/before every trip...

If your "in the area" again maybe take a detour to Cerro Gordo? Think you might find it interesting.

Totally! Belatedly realized we could have hit Cerro Gordo and then tried the pass up the hill beyond to enter Lee Flat from the other side, next time...

have you experienced any battery degradation since you bought the car?

3 years and 40K miles and no, no appreciable loss in capacity/range yet.
