Check out Part 1 of 2 here:
• OVERLANDING: MOJAVE RO...
Here is part 2 of 2 of my first trip to the Mojave Road that cover's days 2 and 3. We had a lot of ground to cover, since we only progressed 22 miles on day 1. We still had at least 100 more miles to go. In this video you will see how varied the terrain is, from a Joshua tree forest, to a Lava field, to a dry lake bed (sometimes wet and impassable) to sand dunes, to a beautiful rock canyon, the Mojave road is an EPIC JOURNEY!
**A group from the MtnRoo led by Jason Osbourne @iluvdrt_oz completed the Mojave road back a few years ago, they even went through the river crossing (although, all their vehicles took on water), so I knew there was some hope in completing this trail. Big thank you to Jason for providing me with information about the trail.

Rob Glick oh No! Wow! I didn’t think failed engines was a thing in FA20DIT’s. Do you think it might have been from carbon build up? Wow! My FXT had a valve spring problem, but that was fixed early on at around 45k miles. Well, hopefully the new engine treats you well!

@@JonDZ_Adventuring apparently the very early Foresters (mine was built 1/13) had problems with LSPI causing bent connecting rods, which mine ended up having, which leads to broken piston skirt, which mine had, which leads to kablooey.

6:43 Going fast on rough terrain makes the shocks work too hard, they get hot, and melt internally. So, I just go slower on stock shocks, and am fine. People who won't slow down probably will need fancy aftermarket reservoir shocks. And lots of other suspension components, too.

I did the Eastern 2/3 of the Mojave in an '18 ZR2. I'm not surprised that your capable Honda and the Baja did it. I doubt you would have managed Watson Wash uphill (You would have faced it downhill and it would have been passable, though you'd have had a wheel in the air a lot of the time ) there's an easy bypass. A few tips: Google maps isn't much a lot of use off road. Learn to use Gaia or Backcountry Navigator and Avenza to see which roads are listed in the MVUMs for federal lands. Driving at 55 MPH on aired down tires isn't that big a deal as long as it's not an all day affair. When you're traversing really soft stuff and clearance isn't as big an issue, don't hesitate to air down to 10 PSI. Just don't hoon around and they'll stay on the rims. It's nice to see unibody vehicles and their enthusiast owners running these trails. Keep making the videos!

In one of your other Passport videos, you said that you could not get the Passport to stay in 1st gear and had to keep the rpms below 1500, otherwise it would shift into 2nd. Did I understand that correctly? What happens if you put it in to "S" and paddle shift it to 1st? Does it stay in 1st?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 4 жыл бұрын
Jay JanyH that is only in D mode and that’s how Honda meant it to work. It’s only a temporary shift and you can “double tap” downshift to get more response to pass somebody. The only way to keep the Passport in a gear is to switch into “S” mode. The only way it will leave a gear is if you either redline or “lug” a gear. Now the 1200-1600RPM range I was talking about is the “Traction control sweet spot”. This is the range where it’s most effective.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 4 жыл бұрын
Jay JanyH to answer your question, yes, paddle shifting to 1st while in “S” mode will keep it in gear.

I have a 19´ Passport Elite and want to start to set it up like yours... is there a write up or video that shows all your upgrades? Tire size, wheel specs to include offset, width, etc., what lift you have? Considering buying some 18´ Ridgeline wheels but not sure if the offset will allow the tire size needed. Thanks... really enjoy your videos.

BABear70 sorry for the late reply! I’ve been wanting to do a walk though video of my ride, and it’s on the to do list, especially now that I’ve had it for a year and 30k+ miles. I get the “tire question a lot” and I think I’ll release a quick video about it. I’ll probably start a segment “three minute thursdays” and start asking common questions.
@JonDZ_Adventuring

BABear70 check out this Instagram post, I have a list of what I have done to the vehicle. But keep in mind that I shaved some of the metal in the wheel well to make my 265/65R18 tires fit. The company Traxda offers a front axle relocation kit that brings the axle forward almost an inch to accommodate for larger tires. Regardless of wheel offset, or even a 2 inch lift the tallest tires you can run are 265/60R18 (with slight rubbing at full lock).

JonDZ Adventuring thanks for responding. I watch all your vídeos since this is the first vehicle I have that could do some off-roading. I will probably won’t do too aggressive sizing on the tires since I do not plan on cutting into the wheel wells like you did. Interested in finding out if the Ridgeline wheels will allow for similarly sized tires without rubbing since the offset is the same as stock for Passport and they are 18”. I saw the all women Engineering team Passport using the Ridgeline wheels. Thanks again for your videos.

Dude, Google Maps is TERRIBLE off road. It looks like it will lead you where you want to go, but on the way once you get on the trails it will turn you around in directions that don't make sense because THEY'RE WRONG. Seriously, get into Gaia GPS or maybe Avenza maps. For off road navigation, they can't be beat. If you want to use Google Maps, predefine your route and make waypoints at each intersection, rather than just at the start and endpoints. Maybe you'll get lucky.

What a stupid comparison for those shocks. You have 3 different trucks with different suspension at different levels of wear and tear. For all we know their Tacoma and frontier had done some hard off roading prior to going there so their shocks may have already been shot and just finally gave out on that washboard road.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
No.... there’s a scientifically explanation..... with solid axles there’s more unsprung weight so the shocks take more of a beating. With many AWD vehicles the shocks aren’t built robust to handle the abuse either. They had issues with the 1st Gen Ridgeline as well, and rectified the issue for the current Gen. I ran the race track playa with my friend with a Gladiator Rubicon with Fox shocks. He’s not as narrow minded as you, and even though he has 25 years of rock crawling experience, he still agrees to take a break at 15 miles in to check on his Fox Shocks. They were hot, and steamed when he poured water on them. My shocks in the Passport were just warm. It’s all about that unsprung weight.
