I feel like this was all Zelda's fault for not just saying she wanted from the get go. We all know how dense Link can be, and so should she. She should have just said she wanted to stab Link with the master sword. None of this subtle hinting and innuendos. By Hylia, he might have thought she wanted to have sex with how suggestive she said "Master Sword". I mean, she might as well said peeeee.... OH! Oh by the goddess, Link is such a brick!

That created a headcanon in my mind that Link was always so super popular and too focused in the knight path and mastering his skills that he never understood why on 14th of February SO MANY people would give him too much candy / chocolate that a normal Hylian wouldn't be able to eat it all but since he is Link and he is a gluton he would devour it all in a few days and since he knows that mostly everyone must know that he's a foodie he just considered that people were kind to him on that day and gifting sweets and food is part of the part of the commemoration of the day
