Welcome to the first edition of Overlooked Atari Arcade Games! Let me know in the comments! Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the video and hopefully I can remind you all of some lesser known Atari Arcade Games!

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us
Check out my written reviews and all of Vinnies 20 years of hard work here

Thanks for watching and please subscribe. It does way more than you'll ever know for me.

The Atari 50 Collection is the gift that keeps on giving. It's the first time I played Cloak & Dagger which I remembered from the movie as a kid (Picked up the 4K of the film recently as well). Fun looking at all the Atari items in the film today.

They weren't in arcades long and most were considered failures so it's not surprising you weren't familiar with them. But playing them on the 50th and stuff has been incredibly fun and they deserve attention!

I was familiar with or at least played all the mentioned games except Liberator. I didn't have a clue that Atari Force comics was connected to an actual game let alone coin-op. I, Robot was a head turner back in the day because of its 3D nature. Cool video, Jon. I appreciate you mentioning how these can be played today. Looking forward to more in this series.

I robot was literally 15 yeas ahead of its time. I hade the Race Drivin arcade (the full cabinet) and it had tons of PCB to make those 3D graphics, so I imagine I Robot was even bigger in term of PCB and components.

Sega was producing "wireframe" (Vector graphics) games that directly competed with Atari: "Tac-Scan", for example. Unlike Atari, Sega does not celebrate (and re-publish) games from that era.

We had black widow in repair at my shop for 3 weeks, once repaired, the image quality of that game on a real color XY monitor is absolutely stunning. The vector lines are 8k resolution, actually they are infinitely perfect because of the nature of moving a analog beam around the phosphore screen. And the colors were really vibrant. I have the Atari collection version and even on my 4k screen, it does not come close to the original. But the gameplay is always fun.

I think Robotron came before Black Widow, because in interviews with Eugene Jarvis, he stated the twin stick was because he broke his arm at the time and this was easier for him to playtest. Otherwise that would've been a joystick/trackball combination. Could be wrong

The problem with half these Atari games is that when you try to play them at home the controls are not right. I have to go through some pretty devious methods in order to play paddle games correctly on an Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. And track balls and rollers and Spinners don't work right even with these devious methods on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Atari should release an official nine-pin to USB adapter so that Atari controls could be remade that work on both the classic consoles the modern Atari VCS 800, as well as Playstation Xbox and Nintendo systems.
@TheAtariNetwork
@TheAtariNetwork 2 ай бұрын
That's something that I know they are aware of, but I think the issue is getting it to function the way you would expect. I don't know if there is really a method for translating these inputs to various consoles (and what not) reliably and I don't know if there is enough interest to warrant a lot of time and money into getting it working. I guess time will tell...

@@TheAtariNetwork case in point example Warlords Arcade. Impossible to play against bot level one without a paddle. You need to be so pinpoint to catch the balls, and you need to access any point on the potentiometer at any time, and the built in centering resistance on a typical game pad does you no favors. Constantly switching between riding the resistance and fighting it makes it very hard to "dial a position". I face someone on Warlords online. First of all I thought it was a cutthroat vs game, but apparently I got the Xbox Achievement for "Betrayal". I was honestly unaware of any indicators that we were teammates. Secondly, he moved so slow that I knew he was using a pad in relative mode. He probably never seen someone catch that accurately. Actually using Atari 9-pin standard does two things. The first is you don't have to predict which systems are performing better between Playstation Xbox and Nintendo. Second is a 9 pin standard that could convert to USB would work just as well with the real back in the day 2600 as well as the 2600+ and the Atari VCS 800. That would also make filling the need for controls at both the retro level and modern level be treated just like one level and not have to subdivide the division into a back in the day controller division a VCS 800 controller division a 2600 Plus controller division a Playstation One a Nintendo one and an Xbox One. By the way the only way I got a paddle to work on the Xbox and Nintendo what's I used an Xbox adaptive controller and plugged an icode converter into the left analog Port of the Xbox adaptive controller. Then to get it working with Nintendo I had to plug in a Brook Wingman NS. And the funny thing is Xbox controllers recognize the difference between a mouse and other analog controllers. Add mice are locked out unless the developer and publisher specifically wants to include them, and that is on a software-specific basis. I still cannot get an analog trackball working for centipede. There's just something very specific about a trackball that Xbox recognizes that won't allow a signal through unless the devs and publishers specifically wanted remembered. I'm trying to tell Atari to tell Xbox to allow mice therefore track balls would work fine with these current circumvention methods. That's all Atari has to do to get USB mice to work is to say to Xbox "we want USB mice and track balls to work."
