Training video produced by Overnite Transportation Company about using the Kwik-Loc dolly to convert a 2-axle truck-tractor to 3-axle truck-tractor. This ws also known as a Kwik-lock, Jif-loc, or Jiff-lock. Since the 1982 Surface Transportation Assistance Act was the federal law that required "twin-trailers" be allowed in all states and this is indirectly referenced in the video the production and release date is estimated as 1984-1986.

Ours were called jiff locks. I think Roadway had Jiff Locks too. We used to go past other trucks and ask them to look and see if my trailer slipped off 5th wheel.Funny when the guy panicked answering me back. When you had it hooked to tractor you had an extra 5th wheel on the Jiff Lock Brand. Joke only worked at night especially around 3-4 a.m.

1985 Jessup Md, walking up to my Cabover. The driver for Roadway hit his air starter. Almost had to go change my clothes over that one. The next week in West Memphis AR at the old Orange ball in the sky. I did not jump as high at the sound of the old air starter.
@brtecson
@brtecson 11 ай бұрын
those air starters wont make any noise at all if they have an air leak. you'll turn the key to start the truck, and you'll hear nothing at all. i found that out when i worked for xpo, and i had an old sterling tractor that had an xpo door sticker covering a con-way sticker that covered a CCX sticker.

And these companies wonder why there is a driver shortage. I used this system 30 years ago. When it's 90 degrees out you look like a drenched rat after make all the hookups. And in the winter with a foot of ice and snow it is nearly impossible to make all of these moves. This system is terrible for the driver.

how does it work with the powered rear axle, and the dolly behind, when both have leaf springs? when the last dolly axle stands on a hill, the drive axle hangs in the air. no driving ahead possible. or am I wrong? both axles (drive axle + dolly) should have air suspension ... I think
@WiltWa
@WiltWa 4 жыл бұрын
Pina Colada, the Overnite dollys has an air suspension and the tractor had springs. The pressure in the dolly suspension was adjusted by the control knob in the dashboard. That helped some in situations like you mentioned, but you still could get stuck. Roadway used these dollys as well, but they had a solid rubber block spring. From what I have heard they were way worse.

I saw one bobtailing when I first started driving in 2005, and I asked my trainer what the heck is that 2 fifth wheel setup for. My trainer told me thats why half of the roadway drivers are on fmla in the winter here in wisconsin, but I wont have to worry about that. Fast forward to 2023, I haul doubles with a tandem tractor and a plain ol dolly. Im not sure why they didn't just use regular tandem tractors and loose dollies back then. Maybe there werent sliding fifth wheels back then? idk

Interesting. I never knew this. Can you imagine doing all that in below zero temperatures and in the dark? Bunch of shit. That's blood money right there. And I'm sure that 5th wheel in winter up in New England in the winter wouldn't budge. Fuck that. Why are all the LOL companies so fucked up? I know it's UPS now, but to save a few dollars they have an engineer design this who has never held this job. And only in theory does it work properly. And the guy spends an hour and a half doing this on the clock. Never again. I would quit the first day.

Now using the tractor proceed to forget the locking pins and pull forward. At this point your fifth is stuck under the trailer. At this point get a buddy to help you to contact dispatch. At this point the friendly shop person in the pick up is on there way to tell you how much they hate you. At this point your wife is now mad due to your new shirt being ruined. At this point give me a long box enough
