12:45 (DAVE): "Watergate" : Watergate is the name of a very large building right in the middle of Washington D.C. It has very nice rooms (often foreign dignitaries work there), it has large conference rooms and offices (because it is very easy walking distance to the White House and the Capitol Building). Nixon was a Republican (usually Red is a Republican symbol, you can remember by Trump's Red hats). The opposite party is the Democratic Party (usually represented by Blue). Before the election of 1972, the Democratic Party set up their headquarters in the Watergate Office Building. Nixon sent in a small group of 5 men to break into the Democratic National Headquarters located in the Watergate Office Building (basically to bug the office and their phones to dig up dirt on the leaders of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) while the Democrats were conducting their next Presidential campaign. Nixon himself did not go, he sent 5 men. The Nixon spies were caught when they broke into the Watergate building (they made a lot of mistakes and people phoned the police because they could see flashlights in the Democratic Headquarters). 1. Nixon won the 1972 re-election by a landslide, even if he hadn't spied on the Democratic Party. (so it was a useless, embarrassing mistake) 2. Nixon argued that a President is basically a king ("while he is President, anything he does is legal" - Nixon:"If the President does it, then it is not illegal.") 3. Nixon used the FBI, the CIA, and the IRS to try to apply pressure to cover up the scandal from 1972-1974. Many people were more outraged at the President abusing his power to try to cover up the scandal. Many people were outraged that the US government spied on its own Democratic Party. Many people were outraged that Nixon said that the President is above the law. (In America, no one is above the law, it is a cornerstone of American democracy. We do not have a king, queen, monarchy, or dictator. This is why the statue of "Lady Justice" wears a blindfold, ALL people are equal before the law, no one is supposed to get special treatment. ((of course I am aware it happens, but it is an ideal we are supposed to follow)) 4. When it became obvious that Nixon was going to be impeached (impeached by Congress then tried by the Senate and removed from office), Nixon suddenly resigned (Aug '74) and his Vice President quickly pardoned Nixon (Sep'74) (so no one could charge Nixon even if they could prove that he broke the law). The Vice President (now President Ford) said that the "pardon of Nixon" was done to help the nation heal (to end all the internal fighting). He might have been right, but many people believe that Ford's quick pardon of Nixon took away the citizens' chance to hold someone they thought was guilty to be held accountable. These are the key points of (Nixon - Watergate) when people mention "Watergate." (Nixon was not a likeable person, but without the scandal, he probably would be remembered for his many accomplishments while President. Instead, he will always be remembered for "Watergate & the only President forced to resign from office.")

I heard that Nixon didn't order the Watergate break-in and that it was done without his knowledge by Gordon Liddy and the rest of the Plumbers who were basically useless people that thought they were cool spies. They were stationed at the white house by the CIA just so they wouldn't have to deal with their incompetence anymore. A lot of that stuff was Nixon wanting to use the dirty tricks employed by the Kennedys but just being inexperienced with that stuff and assigning it to idiots
@VideoNozoki
@VideoNozoki 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lplover007 : Yes, I have heard that claim before too; I believe it is possible but not necessarily true. (Whether we choose to believe that or not...) 3.Nixon definitely used the FBI, the CIA, and the IRS to try to apply pressure to cover up the scandal. ....... But I believe my comment covers the MAIN points of "what WATERGATE was" for Dave (and not that "Nixon himself was in a hotel room doing something wrong, and got caught.") - not like 1990 Mayor Marion Barry caught in a hotel room smoking crack with a girlfriend.

A lot of editorializing there, e.g. "Nixon argued that a President is basically a king", but as for the red for Republican and blue for Democrat, that didn't come about until the presidential election of 2000. In fact, in the 1976 election of Ford vs Carter, the colors were reversed.

Now you need to do Henry VIII, the French Revolution and Napoleon. Oversimplified doesn't have one on Watergate, but there are several 5-10 minute videos that break down the Watergate scandal. When you view it in the arena of today's politics, poor Nixon almost comes off as an angel.

The first batch of M16s were rushed out without chrome lined bores and other small issues that made them unreliable under combat conditions. There was also a lack of cleaning equipment available and due to a rumor that it was "self cleaning" Maintainance was ignored making the problem worse. However shortly afterwards the M16 A1 variant was distributed and solved most of the rifles issues. After the A1 variant came out and maintenance procedures and equipment was distributed the M16 would quickly become much more popular than older heavier rifles. To be fair though for its time the M16 was cutting edge every previous military rifle was wood and steel and all of a sudden some aluminum and plastic (it's actually fiberglass but back then it was called glass reinforced plastic, unsurprisingly soldiers just heard the word plastic and though it was the same plastic toys were made of.(this lead to one of the M16s early nicknames being the Mattel 16)) gun that's painted black. Today the M16 looks old but back then it was some crazy new sh*t.

I was 11 when the Berlin Wall came down and remember watching it on TV with my mom. I couldn’t comprehend how massive that was back then, but I do remember that feeling of cultural and political change was palpable even as a kid who didn’t really get the intricacies of The Cold War. I grew up learning about the evils of communism in early elementary school and having periodic air raid/bomb drills where we’d crouch under our school desks, covering our heads. And it was normal, because I mean, here in the Midwestern US we also have tornado drills which are similar (except we’d go into the hallway of the school to duck and cover). It wasn’t until I was older that I realized the difference and what the country was going through at the time. It’s so weird how I grew up with all that Cold War culture being “normal,” and people just a few years younger than I am would have no concept of any of it.

Yeah, the M16 had a few problems, mainly due to the bureaucratic process of building the design. They took a great design and made slight adjustments for manufacturing and costs. Those adjustments were decided by people who had no idea of the consequences. For an example, the designer called for a chromed part. The government decided to go with a cheaper way of chroming the part than the way the designated. Leading to the chrome flaking off. That put small pieces of metal inside the action that could cause a fault. It also exposed the part to the atmosphere and weather, leading to rust and corrosion that would cause malfunctions. To prevent this causing a big issue you had to clean the weapon constantly, causing its own issues. You would be hard pressed to find a more unaccommodating environment for that platform.

Yeah, even the modern M4 varient needs to be kept meticulously clean. It's more accurate than the AK-47... If it works. Also, they had to downgrade to 3 round burst instead of fully automatic because while I love my fellow soldiers, some are as thick as pig shit and just spray and pray. Bad soldier. Aim, then fire. Remain calm in crisis.

The wall between East Germany and West Germany really left scars. My father was from East Germany and even though it wasn't a real democracy they lived well. But many from West Germany didn't take the East Germans seriously like a small subgroup. There was a lot of hatred that continues to this day. They felled the wall and that was good too and they wanted to do that, but relatively quickly it was noticed that the GDR had been taken over by the FRG, so the unified Germany was just the FRG. Of course, as I said, the GDR was not a real democracy, but it was still home. Especially for my father who was born there. And many East Germans were still smiled at and not taken seriously. So the hate grew on one side and then on the other. To this day, my father and grandfather don't think it's good when so many West Germans can be seen here in East Germany, although that no longer exists for me and they also know that they're just people. Many will not forget the hatred and how they were not taken seriously and treated badly. Even worse is that the GDR was later portrayed as a completely evil dictatorship. Which is partly true, partly not. A whole generation of actually uniform Germans was thus destroyed. And it would be naïve to think that this hatred will die when the generation is gone. Because many parents will pass this on to their children. Luckily my father was a bit more relaxed and wanted me to have nothing to do with it. And all those scars to this day because of that wall, because of that separation. I find it very sad. But still to this day west Germany is taking over east. I mean it's still Germany but as I said. You lived for so long in another country with another German believes.. And as i said this life was not so bad as everybody says.

The M16 was a good weapon, the problem was it was built with close tolerances. meaning it didn’t like dirty environments. The AK on the other hand was just stamped metal and was far more tolerant of foreign debris. that’s why it’s so reliable

Mr. Stoner thought out a fine weapon, as did Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov made his weapon damn near idiot proof, from manufacturing to firing. Stoner made his weapon easy for the soldier but more complicated manufacturing, leading to people tweaking design. Gotta love Heartbreak Ridge “ This is the AK-47 assault rifle, the preferred weapon of your enemy, and it makes a very distinctive sound when fired at you, so remember it.”

I’d just guess that the first produced editions of the M16A1 wasn’t yet refined as time taught the armorers to produce later. A great deal of the functionality was directly proportional to cleanliness/lack of clogging...and it could occur quicker than you thought.
