I gotta tell you guys something. I homeschool a couple of ADHD kids and this channel is exactly the right kind of sarcastic, snarky, random humor that grabs their attention and they will hyper focus and binge watch your channel for hours and learn more history than they do any other way I've found yet. They can quote whole chunks of these videos verbatim. You've got something here guys. Can you please do a video on the Mayflower and Pilgrim story? Also can you point me in the direction of any similar channels that do other subjects in a similar manner like science?

True story about this, when the government started considering intervening on the side of the Confederacy, workers in the UK started rioting and literally smashed their equipment rather than buy it from the south as a sign of worker solidarity. They've apparently built a statue of Lincoln in the following decades as a result.

Fun fact, Grant wasn’t as much of an alcoholic as history makes him out to be. He struggled with it in his early years in the army when he was stationed on the northwest coast, but after that he was rarely drunk. His biggest addiction was actually cigars, which he smoked 3-5 a day, and that is what eventually killed him.

Basically. He was depressed and away from his family for a while which lead to him getting HELLA drunk for a WHILE, but through the rest of his life he rarely drank (though the extremely rare times he did drink, he went super overboard and would have 1-3 day binges until he got himself under control), but most of the times we hear of him drunk are lies from officers who didn’t like him, like his CO in St. Louis who was terrible at his job and Grant called him on it creating an enemy for life. But the Grant we always hear about constantly drinking is mostly just attacks on his character from military (on his side) and political rivals.

28:26 it's a "blank and you miss it" moment, but you can actually see Jackson's capture of Harpers Ferry on the 14th. Here's some more info: when Lee split his army during the Maryland campaign, Stonewall Jackson was sent to capture the town of Harpers Ferry, which was defended by a Union garrison under one Colonel Dixon Miles, who would end up dying while riding to the Rebel lines to surrender. Aside from the initial fighting along the Maryland Heights overlooking the town, Jackson was able to win without much loss of life on either side.

Thanks for covering Lincoln's lesser known negative traits. He was quite 'melancholic', a term used back then to describe what we would call depression now. When Lincoln and Mary Todd's engagement was "apparently" called off, several close associates of Lincoln feared his suicide. The loss of his children left mental scars along with the huge emotional burden of not only limiting the amount of American deaths but having the fate of every slave in America in his hands. It's remarkable that Lincoln was able to make it through all of that. I remember reading a book where a character gave a fake quote "I do not know if great times make great men but they can most certainly break them."
@CNep99
@CNep99 2 жыл бұрын
He was also a big jokester and also just kinda silly, and that probably helped a great deal in the last incredibly streessful years of his life. One of my favorite stories is about an officer running into Lincoln in the War Department and then begged him a thousand pardons. Abe told him one was enough and wished that his generals would change like that. But one of my favorite tender stories about him during the war was when he was visiting an army camp where he came across three kittens who he asked where their mother was and learned she had died. He then told the kittens he was happy that they weren't able to comprehend how terrible the Civil War was. It's then said he ordered that they were fed and taken care of and then he sat and pet them and listened to them purring 😭

BTW... First Manassas was the very first battle for new West Point graduate and commissioned Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer. While the battle was a rout for the Union troops, Lt. Custer was able to stop some of the Union troops from fleeing willy-nilly, to conduct an ordered, fighting retreat. Custer would go on to fight in nearly all the major battles in the Eastern theater, courageously leading his cavalry from the front in charge after charge, and becoming a major factor in many Union victories. Becoming one of the youngest brigadier generals in the history of the US Army just days before the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg, on the third day of the battle he led his volunteer Michigan cavalry in repeated charges against a larger force of Jeb Stuart's Invincibles, handing them their first-ever combat defeat, preventing the possibility of Stuart's cavalry attacking Meade's troops from the rear during Pickett's Charge. While Stuart didn't have orders to do so, it's entirely possible that he would have, knowing Jeb, had the opportunity presented itself. In a later battle, it was Custer's troops who would be responsible for Stuart's death, removing one of Lee's best generals from the war. At Appomattox, General Phil Sheridan would purchase the table Lee signed the surrender papers on and present it to Libbie Custer, telling her that no one person had done more to bring about the Union's victory than her gallant husband...although I think Julia Dent Grant would've had a persuasive argument making that claim for her husband! George Armstrong Custer was a legitimate Civil War hero.

Toori Baba No-instead of keeping black people as slaves he orders muslims to be kept out of the country, encourages systematic racism and makes life for immigrants who are fleeing from wars as hard as possible-persecuting them for trying to save their families. He encourages homophobic attacks, tacitly supports alt-right groups and explicitly supports two separate dictatorships with appealing human rights records. Slavery was an abomination and Trump is leagues worse because he has become so normalised that we are no longer outraged at his policies-at least during the slave trade people knew what was happening was horrific and evil.

I googled it. "Unconditional surrender grant" isn't a joke. It seems that was actually a name the historical figure had. I love the way oversimplified does this. Historical facts and Easter Egg fun in the narrative. Brilliant.

@@The_whales just shows there's always something new to learn. To someone who has no interest in a foreign countries civil war (as it's has minimal effect on the history of my country and continent), the 'name' sounds silly and made up. But obviously it's neither and is intact an interesting insight into the war.

10:48 “To make matters worse, new Northern free states meant that now the South really was outnumbered, and they were beginning to feel oppressed.” 😂😂😂 The irony of a slaveholder class operating an agrarian economy feeling oppressed by the Northern industrialists would be hilarious if not for the awful history of slavery behind it… 😭
