Design interviews can be really intimidating at first because it requires public speaking, but you will get better at it with time as you practice talking about your design process.

Hi Christine, I love this video :) Could you do a video on how you choose the company you want to work for? What are your criteria: company culture, colleagues, industry, office space, etc.? What type of questions did you write in your notebook and how they helped you make a decision about which company you want to join? That would be really great! At the end of the day, you have to choose only one company. I am interested in how you make this decision :)

The interview process sounds nerve-wracking, but also like a great opportunity for growth. As a physical therapist, typically our interview process is a 15 minute chat with the hiring manager, then we’re hired. This is a totally different animal haha. The whiteboard challenge sounds the most anxiety-provoking.

This video was super helpful as someone who's only had informal interviews, I've never had an irl structured interview and it's great to find out what I should expect. As a new designer, I have a hard time questioning existing designs (when they don't have visual faults) so the app critique portion would trip me up. Do you know any resources that can help show how experienced designers would react in situations like that or questions to mentally run through to help start the process?

At 4:20, you said you prepared for a portfolio interview anyway even though the interviewer never explicitly said you'd be doing one, and then you went straight into talking about what you did for reviews. Does this mean that you actually ended up doing a portfolio review for the company? As in, the company didn't tell you about it ahead of time and you ended up having to do one? I'm just worried because the hiring manager never told me what was going to happen for the last interview round, and I don't know if I should be preparing a portfolio presentation or not.

I have an issue of building connections and asking for referrals, because I don't think I did good in school, I've always have that realization of what I should have done too late...does anyone have similar situations? what would you do???Also I have been feeling that my ability to talk right is degrading due to language barrier, even though I am now trying to overcome it by reading more, documenting more and record myself more often, I still don't have that confidence to say " i have excellent verbal and writing communication skills" as most of the job description requires...sigh sometimes I really don't know what to do:/
@Lilybenet
@Lilybenet 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ty. I didn't do good in school either, and, like you, realized what I should have done too late. With that being said, you're on the right track! By reading more, documenting, and recording yourself you're being proactive and growing. When you interview you can use this to your advantage. A common question in interviews is often "What are your strengths and weaknesses." In this you don't have to say that your feel you have great verbal skills etc...you can actually say that you feel like they need "more work." (Notice, I didn't use the word "bad" or "poor." You want to frame it in a way that is neutral, not negative.) And you can use this to highlight your strengths!! How you are proactive, you take initiative, and are always working to improve this weakness, but all you other skills. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work!

As long as you can put out good work out there, age is not a huge determining factor in design. If you're looking to apply your HTML and CSS knowledge to the job, becoming a web developer might make more sense for you.
