On the contrary, public broadcasting should always be state owned, with the state-owned broadcaster being ensured a dominant place in the media market (as with the BBC). There is a far greater conflict of interest when broadcasting and the media are owned by rich people, and are driven by the profit motive rather than by the public interest.

Correct, history is clear on that. Mr. Arthur in this address is misleading and deceptive, his primary reason for privatisation has nothing to do with employees owning and controlling the entity, it is political, out of 5 captions, he only mentioned 2, his main problem was to use people like Dennis Lowe etc are the scapegoat to get some of the masses to agree with privatisation, BUT, history also shows that the major shareholder with 10 years, buy out the minority shareholders, and the BIG enterprises still end up with the entity in their pockets.

This is a most distressing video to watch. Michael Manley's capitulation to neo-liberalism in the 1980s and 1990s at least had the justification that it appeared (if you believed the Economist etc at the time) to work. It was 2012 when Owen spoke, and we know that privatization does not work: it leads to inferior and more expensive services, to social exclusion, and to slower economic growth as more national income goes to the profits of those who now provide public services.

If you knew that Dennis Lowe and other Ministers were breaking the law, why did you not have them prosecuted ? You now want someone else to do it that which you were in a position to do. So you want to sell our assets to us? makes no sense, it is already the peoples assets. The Incorporated Barbados is an entity unto it's own, a Corporation, and every Corporation had a product or products that it sells that brings in Direct Revenue, and if that Corporation has no product, it has to fail. You want citizens to own their own in the private world, then help them establish a competing entity. If any householder here gives up their job or enterprise, how are they going to be able to support themselves and their families; do they borrow, and live off the other members of the house? if that is so, the house is in the red by one person who gave up their job or enterprise, and the standard of living must take a hit.

Owen, I am begging you, return to your political roots. Do not betray the legacy of Grantley and Tom Adams. As Kari Levitt concluded her exchange with Manley: “I think it is now clear that the neo-liberal model has failed to deliver either stability or growth.... It has not worked in Jamaica". It will not work in Barbados. And it will be destructive of 60 years of social progress.

The question is, why won't it work? this question was never asked.
