@@beowulf1312 they were limited, that's true: the Miarge III and the derivatives that the Argentine Air Force had were Full Interceptors: designed to fight at high altitude and very high speed: take them to a Dogfight at low altitude and speed against stubby subsonic planes like the Sea Harriers put them at a very clear tactical disadvantage. And that is leaving aside the R-530 and 550 missiles of the mirages and the very new Aim-9 ¨Lima¨ Sidewinder that days before the Royal Navy had received from the USA, with a broad appearance. Perhaps the Gazelle shootdown might be a good topic for the video. We have them in DCS. I can't fly them particularly well but probably well enough to get shot down 🤣

@@showtime112 The only confirmed argentinian air victory was a Scout helicopter shot down by a IA-58 Pucara with rockets and cannon fire in May 28.

It may have been an SAS unit who took out the Puccara with a stinger. Possibly mountain-troop led by Major Cedric Delves.Excellent book by him available 'Across an angry sea'.

There was not much combat between Mirage IIIs and Sea Harriers, because the Mirage is a full-fledged, high-altitude, high-speed Interceptor, and Sea Harriers are subsonic aircraft developed for low- and medium-altitude combat. Generally, the pilots of the FAA and the Royal Navy did not coincide in heights, since it was not at all convenient for each one to go to the optimum operating height of the adversary. the few times this happened, it was the Argentine pilots who went down to the operational level of the Harriers, obviously in a disadvantageous tactical position. This is how Captain (Post) Ardiles loses his life: Ardiles was a First Lieutenant and was serving as a pilot of a Mirage M-5 Dagger in the VI Air Brigade based in the city of Tandil. On May 1, 1982, the day of the baptism of fire of the Argentine Air Force, Ardiles' Mirage M-5 Dagger together with another Dagger piloted by Captain Carlos Alberto Rohde took off for the Malvinas, armed with 30 mm cannons and two Shaffrir missiles each. Rohde's Dagger does not take off due to technical problems, and Ardiles decides to continue alone. Already in mission, the Malvinas information and control center guided Ardiles to intercept an echo that would be an English Harrier plane; the radar echo morphed into two combat air patrol (PAC) planes; Despite everything, Ardiles decides to engage in combat to protect the A-4B Skyhawk squads, defenseless against the Harriers PACs. It was shot down by an AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile.

@@showtime112 With a group of friends we worked making Mods for Strike Fighters 2, it's an old simulator and visually limited, but we have it pretty sharp! we have recreated the Malvinas campaign from both sides, historically very reliable. I have personally made the flight models of several rare Argentine aircraft, such as the IAe-27 Pulqui 1 and the IAe-33 Pulqui 2, as well as the reimar Horten design that competed against the latter.

Well, the RN fleet probably didn't think air defense was too important in the role they would play in a NATO vs Soviets style scenario in the Atlantic. But their capabilities were limited indeed.

No fleet was prepared for such attacks at that time, even they were armed with countless anti air missiles and ammunition. The Argentinians revolutionized naval warfare that time. Since then most of the naval powers on the world had to develop new defensive systems. Even today, extremely low altitude attacks are hard to withstand.

@@showtime112 Exactly. And their missiles had been conceived to engage Soviet Bombers flying on a steady course, high altitude and far away. As Fighter, the Sea Harrier had the same task. And there were no CIWS back then; a Phalanx system would have ravaged the whole Argentinian Air Force, since their aircraft always strived to drop their bombs pointblank.

I'm glad you liked it! I do want to reenact some of Morgan's victories. I bought his memoirs and there's plenty of detail there.

The runway wasn't long enough for fast jets. With the benefit of hindsight, extending it should have been the first thing to do right after the invasion.

Two issues. As @Showtime112 mentioned, the runway was too short. It could only be used by Pucarás and Aermacchis. Even B737 carrying troops had difficulties operating there. The other problem is that the runway was bombed by an Avro Vulcan that flew from Asencion Island.

They were defending their homeland, surely you would do the same... greetings!

What's the need to say "teenager". They were all adult males, +18. In fact the British were the only ones that had at least 3 underage in their ranks. Include uno 16 who turned 17 on the way.

St 28-30 you already are a decreased value resource. We start losing muscle mass, increase belly fat, harden circulatory system, drop in resistance and stamina, and drop in hormones. Soldiers are preferred young because they are at their prime, they are aggressive, passionate, can be irrationally fanatic, have a lot of testosterone, can take more abuse and recover faster .

Maybe. He probably didn't think too much but just went for the safe bet - a frigate clearly in front of him that he could hardly miss. I think he should have attacked the helicopter nevertheless, his 30mm guns would have had an easy job. An air-to-air victory is special, even a hovering helicopter.

@@showtime112 The helo would have been a wiser choice, the Brits had a limited number of them to begin with. He would have done more for their war effort if had done that instead of wasting his ordnance and risking his life, plus the aircraft going after a war ship with what he had.

@@oveidasinclair982 - Not quite so...If he had damaged the radar and the communications antennaes, the frigate would have become unoperational, practically out of service, not eligible for any other combat tasks.

It was not so: the information that Crippa obtained with that flight (when escaping among the English fleet, he flew over them again to draw their exact positions and types of vessels on his right leg notepad) was of capital importance for the Argentine commanders. The Linxs that he came across was a helicopter that was used as an "Early Warning": shooting it down would not have meant more than a simple personal score. Crippa precisely, knowing that his weapons are of small caliber and limited in quantity, aimed to the ship's radar and communications systems, trying to maximize the result of his bare weapons. He didn't have too many seconds to think, but he thought a little. I can pass you a video where he tells it himself, although you will have to translate it. Greetings!

There certainly weren't too many Harriers. And they had a similar problem to Argentine aircraft, not a very long endurance over the battle area.

And the courage of the argentine soldiers? 18 or 19 years and they fight like brave warriors.

And your airforce was way bigger. As for the support what did you expect for us to do? turn the U.S. support down? You also did not mention the military and diplomatic support you received from Peru,Libya,France,Israel,Soviet Union and the Latin American. Galtieri dealt himself a bad hand and played it poorly.

We don't have the Wasp in DCS but we have the Gazelle. That scenario might be interesting to cover if I can find enough details.

Those two helicopters were shot down by light gun fire. It is not very know that there was an argentine patrol at San Carlos that day (Most documentaries about the war ignore this and focus only in the "bomb alley"). They shot down two helicopters, damaged another one, got in a firefight with the RM and managed to break contact marching all the way back to San Carlos, these men belonging to the 25th infantry regiment were sent back to Goose Green as part of the reinforcements who arrived too late to fight at Darwin only to be taken prisoners there...
