Owen Jones goes to Labour conference: 'There's been a peaceful revolution under Jeremy Corbyn'

At the Labour conference, Jeremy Corbyn called for more activists to help propel him and the party to power at the next general election. I went down to Brighton to go to conference - and Momentum's events at The World Transformed - to meet those on the frontline. What I discovered there was a "peaceful revolution" underway, with a renewed enthusiasm, energy and confidence.

Interested to know what the "new ways of campaigning" are. Most activists I have talked to (across the parties) seem to have a very narrow view of politics in general and a particular lack of understanding when it comes to basic principles.

Full Guardian? Patronizing the dispossessed, agitating for radical left wing change, then panicking, backtracking and fleeing to the centre ground when that actually becomes a real possibility (see Polly Toynbee). All whilst trying to flog £300 cashmere jumpers to overpaid 22 year old advertising executives. That's about it.

I am young and middle class and live in Jeremy Corbyns constituency so i should at least statistically be a labour supporter but for some reason i am really uncomfortable with some of labour voters/supporters mainly just the middle class north London socialist and that's why at least I think if labour wasn't so forceful and annoying with its supporters more people would vote for it and it could get into government.

Well the basic truth is that because of the growing gap between the top rich and the rest people now voting all around the world against the establishment, which for them represents the few but not the many. Then we had the economic crisis which is far away from ending no matter what some people are saying , then we had Brexit which again was a vote against the establishment. Sadly people now is voting Against rather than For.And inevitably Labour are going to win the next elections not just because of what they are doing but because of the mess Tories has created in the last year.If I'm an adviser I should say , do not do any hard moves, put yourself as an opposition of the establishment and you will get the office

I am 61 and remember the problems caused by the present model the Labour Party is promoting. The country was in a greater mess in the late 1960's and during the 1970's, due as a direct result of powerful greedy trade unions. If we nationalise trains, power, water and the rest, then the Government becomes the employer, so instead of localised strikes in the South East rail network they become national strikes. It was the outcome of these sort of Labour policies that led directly to them being in a political wilderness for 25 years. So, no Owen you will not win over older voters with these policies, you will allienate them. You got a fair result in the last election, but you did not win and as Alistair Campbel pointed in your recent interview, you won't win reverting back to 1960's politics. Like it or lump it Tony Blair changed the fortunes of the Labour Party and John Prescott brought in some interesting creative ideas. You may not like what they did, but they brought changes and gained power for Labour, which I doubt Corby will suceed in doing. You will end up disappointed as utopiean political idiological dreams fail.

Does anyone have info about how much Labour's membership has grown since the election? I heard it was 600,000 and has now grown to more than 800,000, at least according to the BBC and Reuters, anyone got more on this, ie with connections to Labour? I expect there must be some people reading this who would know.

I hope there's policy influence moreover actually direct interface and transformation in useful services and informal democracy for the people not just commercial lobbyists etc. Though expectations must not be dashed, fall flat, go stale or overcook. We must not poison the keg. We need to make the best decisions at all levels. Actually deliver without much dropped. No nasty surprises. Some of this will involve hard choices and/or honesty. Or be slower to turn around or it could be faster than people think. Probably slower.

I'd like more then canvassing: but is patchworking community work a model for a party? Can it work, without overburdening or becoming claustrophobic? Or faked? I'd like to think that was actually possible. But I don't know. It's a big thing that's not been done before. And there are so many problems in the world. But we need to start on them.

Housing safety standards have come into sharp focus since last week’s devastating fire in west London that left at least 79 people dead or presumed dead, and dozens more injured. Since 2015, Labour has put two pieces of legislation before Parliament to try and improve housing safety for council houses and privately rented properties. The Tories have blocked both. The fact many are landlords......

Dear Mr Jones (dear Owen), I am writing to you with great sorrow after watching your twitter allocution on the Catalonian crisis. I've been following you since you came to notoriety in Spain, mostly as a result of your support to PODEMOS (for which, I confess, I voted in every election since 2015 -the PODEMOS movement first became a political party in late 2014) and I am proud and happy to say that I share most of your views on topics about which I hold sufficient knowledge as to be able to have an own-developed coherent view of. I am very disappointed in you not exactly because of your support to Catalonian right to self-determination but because of the "broad brush" kind of arguments you brought forward in the said allocution, which might be summarised as follows: a. self-determination is an absolute right of peoples. b. if individuals can divorce, regions/territories/peoples can secede. I am astounded by the lack of 'intelectual finesse' of this kind of argumentation, definitely unworthy of an Oxford graduate such as yourself, Mr Jones (Owen). Firstly, according to Resolution 2625 of the UN General Assembly (Oct. 24th 1970) the right to self-determination only applies to "peoples subjected to alien subjugation, domination and exploitation" or, in other words, colonies, for instance the former British ones. Catalonia, I believe you might agree with me in this, is no colony (but for multinationals' as is the rest of the world is). Indeed, Canada and the UK authorised under their own particular (codified and un-codified) constitutions referenda on self-determination of Quebec and Scotland respectively. That was their free choice or the result of an internal political struggle. However, the Spanish constitution in art. 2 states that Spain is the indivisible homeland of the Spanish people (no eccentricity here, France, Italy, Germany and even the American pledge of alligience have similar wordings). Moreover, art 1.2 consacrates that "national sovereignty belongs to the Spanish people". Consequently, there is no legal way, unless the constitution is previously ammended, to hold a referendum on self-determination of Catalonia, or any other region for that matter, without being in severe breach of the constitution. Secondly, are you seriously comparing secesion to divorce? I know that Bexit is usually equated to a divorce (a very acrimonious one as everyone can see) but I am sure you can spot the metaphore in the word 'divorce' and therefore the stupidity of the logical train of thought you are implying. (Peoples are composed of individual persons. Divorce is 'equal' to secesion. Persons can divorce ergo peoples can secede.) I consider this absolutely ludicrous and a kind of Farage-like simplification of reality. I know you have been a great supporter of Scottish self-determination but not of Scottish Independence, that is truly respectable. However, on my part, I do not want for my country and my people-including those living in Catalonia-, the kind of political instability that Cameron's decision brought and is likely to bring (holding a referendum every few years -not generations- until the YES carries it) to the UK for the decades to come. Nonetheless, I should be grateful to Mr Cameron for signalling the path to "not-solve" a political problem such as these Furthermore, Catalonia is a rich region (2nd richest and 25% over the Spanish average GDPpc) which pretty much explains all this fuss. The Catalan government pushed for a "tax deal" in 2012 (when the Independence movement was pretty much marginal in Catalan society) that would have significantly cut redistribution of wealth to other regions. When this request was refused by the national government, they fired up the people into this mess under the premise of "Spain is robbing us" and promising not having to pay any more money to poorer reagions such as Andalusia or Extremadura. Please, allow me, it is equivalent to inner London pushing for secesion because their "high" taxes are financing public services in the Durham area or in Wales. I do not know you that intimately, Mr Jones (owen), but I have the feeling that you would not agree with those n***** f******* rich t***** getting away with it, would you, Mr Jones (Owen)? I must really apologise that this message got really long but it is merely proportional to my disappointment. However, please, make a signal if you would like me to contact you in order to further clarify anything that might remain obscure to you about my reasoning. Best Fernando

For many reasons I'll be voting for Corbyn, for me one of the most important reasons is climate change. When we inevitably go fully sustainable and use geothermal, biomass, wave energy, tidal energy, solar and wind, cheap stable power will be the norm by ... 1: Using many renewable sources as listed above as even on a windless night the others are unaffected. 2: Using suitable energy storage like pumped water, liquid air, batteries and biomass etc. 3: Trading energy over large distances, across continents then eventually the globe. This would even out supply and demand. This is one application that capitalistic free market economics would be most helpful by quickly managing demand and supply.

Quite extraordinary really. I left school (83) when Thatcherism was at its height and for so many years after it seemed like a socialist government was a distant prospect, resulting in the rise of Blair and the advent of centrist politics. Seems like austerity has been a game changer and now that it has affected the middle classes this is the closet we have been in my lifetime. Jez needs to realize one fundamental fact though, being in the EU will never allow a left wing government to build a society built on socialist principles.

You seriously think he can get that tax collected? Increases taxes beyond a certain level can sometimes means that you end up collecting less tax. I think he is being unrealistic, big business that do business on the internet will always get away with murder...also so easy to move from country to country...wonder why Ireland and Luxembourg are favourite sites for Head Offices....capital flight will always be a problem. Labour chancellors have tried in the past to, and I quote, "tax till the pips squeak"....and they have come undone and thrown the country into recession. As an economist you should know the lessons of 1976 when a labour chancellor had to go on his knees to the IMF......and they told him how to run the show, including cutting public spending....all I see is huge wage rises, high unemployment, even bigger public debt....seriously can you see the city buying O'Donnells junk bonds for nationalisation, let's bring PFI home...its all a big joke to me...but then I've lived throughthis country's darkest moments, including when everybody was on strike....have you?

pete1201 yeh I have seen, what the Tories have done and haven't got any physical credibility, they spend as much as they desire, people don't care but when labour wants to spend money for projects which will benefit out country, you all seem to be against him. Labour has a costed manifesto which take s certain risk factors on board. Look at the Tories no costed manifesto and they get away with reckless borrowing. Before you say they decrease the deficit, first they said they will get rid of it c9mpletely and now that target been pushed, they may have decrease the deficit at what cost? They have increase a substanional amount of debt of this country, To be honest you need to get the right balance of debt and deficit, you have to cut them evenly as one could have bigger impact on another, labour are credible, they have.plans for investment and to help our economy grow

That clip at the beginning shows just how power can abuse politics/ politicians. I know Jeremy hasnt caused this himself to any large degree however the holding up of politicians as rock stars and celebrities is always the forerunner to how power gets abused. I would be ewually as disturbed (and shocked) if that was done to Theresa May aswell.

I do like Jeremy Corbyn and his policy ideas. But when it comes to culture and education, I take a more conservative approach: I hate the fact that at school we no longer learn about British history (the good and the bad) and our culture such as our songs, poetry and quirky traditions. It is my opinion that to form a cohesive society, we need to promote our identity so that everyone can attach themselves to it. This 'nothingness' is what I see the Labour Party promote; and too the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, and I certainly don't want to vote UKIP. So I feel a little lost in voting for the Labour Party, unfortunately.

I hope Corbyn's Labour buck the global trend towards extreme politics, such as those of Trump and the Tories, by winning the next general election. We need a return to moderate, sensible politics.

I would not describe Corbyn as a moderate, he is a 70s throw back of the hard left variety.

Go on Owen, campaign to bring those policies that worked so well in Venezuela to the UK! Luckily for you you're able to make a good living and become a minor celebrity misleading the UK's youth without dealing with the pain and misery your policy agenda would cause to the poor and needy. Have fun at the Labour conference with your middle class Labour admirers and try not to get too close to any of those unpleasant genuine working class people who may very rudely think you're full of it.

I would like to explore your sense of ethics here and question your assumption someone can have perfect for-knowledge of their financial situation. Children are dependent or semi-dependent on their parents for 18 years or so situations can change. Say you have children, and lose a job or a spouse, or perhaps suffer an spinal injury at work which reduces your ability to support them. Would you blame that person for their lack of planning?

If labour wants to win the next election they must push through votes for sixteen year olds now whilst the Tories are weak in parliament so by the next election they can win.

@NagleOliver

Awesome Avenger Firstly, their not children. Secondly, it's not even about Corbyn winning it's a matter of principal. If their old enough to pay tax, go to prison, get married, have sex or buy a house they should have a right to elect a government that gives them those freedoms and imposes those laws.
