In this episode Brendan and I head into the woods to tackle a feature which Bren has been working on in secret! A 50 foot canyon hidden deep in the surrey hills. Riding big features on a small bike with a canyon expert. What could possibly go wrong?!
In this episode I'm riding my Focus Jam. Where my body failed my bike did not. It's a 150mm travel bike capable of giant gaps and giant crashes!

LaaaahdaaaMercy! I wish there was a way of putting you two into perspective. I'm going to try : I am now what can best be described as a 'lower intermediate grand veteran'. 54 years old. Started MTB in 200s. No background of BMX or dirt jumping. Learned before KZfaq was a thing. Based my expectations and aspirations on still Pics of Rob & Peatey and the the Atherton 'kids'. Maybe getting lucky enough to borrow a 'Kranked' DVD once. I get to the point on my Turner 5 Spot, where I'm happy rolling into Black Runs across the 7 Staines and most of the old Welsh trails. But jumping is still hard to come by and there is no hint of a sculpted transition anywhere. All jumps in my world are still based on Eval Kineval .... BPW arrives, things change. Twisted Oaks arrives and things change fast for me. Short course learning. Repeat jumping and Berming. Great. In my head I'm now amazing. I see images of the Surrey Hills on KZfaq, I watch Bren & Olly regularly, I watch Sam Reynolds and Bernard K (sometimes I even watch Deaks 😉) . My mind goes soft. I start to accept that this riding is just ... riding? I compare my local trails and features in real life to the KZfaq world... It does start to feel a bit weird when I show people clips of me doing something that took a year to learn and get the courage to do, like a 12ft gap with 5ft take off and landing ramps... and people are like mmmmmeh. I watch Sam Pilgrim and I saw some Rampage reels. 😶‍🌫Ok then. Before xmas, I went down to the Surrey Hills and rode some of the natural stuff and saw some of the tamer features. I followed some experienced Grand Veteran locals..... FFFFFFSSSSSS!! It's ridiculous. Just riding down some if this stuff is more technically demanding that anything other than a modern Bike Park Black run. And most of that extreme grading is based on features not the the natural tech!! Olly & Bren are hitting insane features AFTER riding down this insane natural terrain. For breakfast. At one point I considered suing GoPro & KZfaq for misinformation and putting my life at risk by making me think this stuff is actually achievable. It's not. Riding their lines is akin to trying play your local pub football team against A premiership side. I am going to find this gap and just sit there for an hour and meditate. Thank you both as always for your wonderfully humble humour and non corporate unamerican content. We all love you. Meanwhile Mr Wilkins, complex B vits, lots of water and your usual positive mindset. Oooohhhmmm!

So Sick you guys! Love it, but bummed you got hurt. I am literally currently broke off as well from MTB crash. Broke my ankle a few days before Sam Renolds hurt his ankle. As far as your injuries when I saw Brens vid I immediatly thought it happened on the landing...at least the elbow..and I have broken fingers on bars/brake levers before. Godspeed in healing to all of us "broke off" shredders! 😁

Great to see the comradery between you two before and after the jump. Your lad science is quite impressive too. I`m no expert on jumps, but to me it looks like the second impact is much worse than the first one. On the first one you still manage to roll it out, get some of the impact to the rear wheel. On the second impact you land really front heavy and seem to stop right in that spot. So all the force goes through your hands and arms, and you also hit the ground quite hard, sideways in a weird angle. I hope you recover well Olly, glad the rest of you is fine. All the best and thanks for all your great content, podcasts etc.
