Lyrics:
The Tornado
It was just starting to drizzle as I walked out the door
But I’ve delivered papers in the rain like that before
Three thirty in the morning, I was happy as a lark
As I grabbed my bike and rode into the dark
I pedaled through the neighborhood, the weather on my mind
The wind was picking up and howling louder all the time
The sky churned like a cauldron and the distant thunder roared
And I knew that I was in for quite a storm
A little rain never hurt no one so I kept pressing on
And I tried to tell myself, it’s always darkest before the dawn
Lightning struck an oak tree as I leapt off my bike
The sirens started wailing but there was no good place to hide
I knew without a doubt, there was a twister touching down
So I crawled into a culvert to wait it out
The little bit of courage I had left was almost gone
But I tried to tell myself, it’s always darkest before the dawn
And then the nightmare started, it got deafeningly loud
Everything fiber in me screamed out but I couldn’t make a sound
The whirling of a vortex, a violent carousel
It sounded like a freight train was dragging me to hell
And this was my prayer, “save me from this terrible nightmare”
That was when I saw my family with my eyes shut real tight
Would they know how much I loved them if this was how I died?
No, I vowed I’d not be murdered by a monster in the sky that night
But if I went home to heaven, at least that’s where I'd belong
Yeah I tried to tell myself, it’s always darkest before the dawn
So I kept hanging on
I kept hanging on
The shadows slowly melted as I was hunkered down
Till at last the worst was over, the storm was dying out
I crept out of that culvert and I went weak in the knees
Cuz what I saw was a somber sight to see
There was nothing but destruction and wreckage in that town
Cars were upside down and houses leveled to the ground
A twisted trampoline was hanging from the power lines
I blinked a tear back cuz I felt lucky to be alive
And that was how I learned to live when you can run but you can’t hide
How to feel trapped in a tunnel but come out the other side
Cuz with all the stormy weather in the world, you learn to take
Life one storm at a time, you don’t have to be afraid
And now when there’s bad weather on the way, I stay calm
And I keep hanging on because it’s always darkest before the dawn
And I keep hanging on
I keep hanging on

Since first breaking onto the alt-pop scene in 2007, Owl City has built a global following on the strength of his heart-on-sleeve songwriting and endlessly inventive sound. Along with earning a monumental hit with the seven-times-platinum “Fireflies”-a 2009 release that reached No. 1 in 26 countries-the Minnesota-bred artist otherwise known as Adam Young has made waves with smash singles like the double-platinum “Good Time” feat. Carly Rae Jepsen and brought his exuberant live set to sold-out shows around the world. With total album sales of over three million and single sales surpassing 20 million globally, Owl City is now set to deliver a highly anticipated new album in 2023: a wildly imaginative body of work revealing his deepened devotion to the strange magic of creativity.

I saw people acting like this was a sudden drastic change because they’ve only ever heard “Fireflies”. But as someone who has listened to many (not all or most, but many) of his songs, this is beautiful and it sounds like something he’d make.

@@The1stPurpleCat it's really exactly in his genre, and I don't really understand why people think its so unlike fireflies?? I don't think people understood that song. how I understand it, its about having severe insomnia and possibly night terrors, and coping with that. This song is about anxiety attacks/autistic meltdowns, and coping with them. (I may be projecting about fireflies because I have severe insomnia and used to listen to it to sleep)

The high notes are so surprising coming from Adam, but especially because it provides a tonality change to his signature style. Flows with the pace of the song extremely well, the build-up is perfection. Kudos to him, absoloutely gorgeous song.

It’s also kind of representative of the storm, how it gets loud and chaotic at the climax and dies off as the storm blows over. It might have been obvious, but I just like talking about symbolism cuz it’s C O O L

"Every fiber in my being screamed out but I couldn't make a sound" "and this was my prayer, save me from this terrible nightmare" I cried and screamed. I called my mom and told her how much I loved her. Thank you for this song, it might have saved a life

This song describes what a meltdown feels like for me. Especially the chorus. The beginning, where its talking about the rain is the buildup. Drop by drop it gets more intense, but you keep riding because maybe it'll go away. Then there's everything after the words, "and then the nightmare started" it's like passing the point of no return. "Every fiber in me screamed out but I couldn't make a sound" verbal shutdown. "And this was my prayer, save me from this terrible nightmare" the actual meltdown becomes obvious to the people around you. Your body isn't yours anymore, it's like there's someone else pulling the strings. You have no control over your actions anymore, the violent storm inside you dictates what you do.

I know the feeling all too well. Been struggling with panic attacks since early elementary school, and now I'm in my senior year of high school. But on the bright side, I've gotten through the first week of this year with no attacks (or at least none that escalated beyond mild agitation)! What's been working for me is a) sleeping well, b) simply taking a few deep breaths when the first signs of stress show up, being sure to focus only on the physical sensation of breathing and not on whatever nonsense is going on in the back of your mind, and c) setting aside a few minutes each day to meditate on God's Word in a calm, quiet environment where you can reflect on what message God may be trying to convey to you. Whether or not that last one fits your worldview, any time spent in a more positive, thoughtful headspace ought to do you some good, so just put on some chill music and, I dunno, journal your thoughts or somethin'! :D You got this, my dude. We're gonna get through this together. God bless! 😊

When Adam sings the lyric “That was when I saw my family with my eyes shut real tight,” I imagine him laying in his safe spot, welcoming the quiet, letting his eyes close. Slowly drifting off into a fitful doze, & he felt his body become heavy with weariness as he slipped deeper into peaceful sleep, a smile appeared on his face, his comforting dreams focused on his love for his family, even if that’s not what he means in the song.

If you have God with you you can have confedence to be unstoppable :D The darkness alwayse has ways to have me forget that, but I keep pressing farward and it’s still there anyway. Adam's music has always been my go-to "I need to have more joy in my life" music. I'm typically a very upbeat and optimistic person, but I'm in a bit of a rough place right now and when *that* part happened I felt... seen for the first time in a while. I think the real genius of this song isn't just that it goes to that hard, raw, painful place; what really sets it apart is that it doesn't stay there. I feel genuinely uplifted by this song. Thanks Adam ❤

Is this a reference to the 5/3/1999 Bridgecreek & Moore OK EF5 Multiple people were nearly sucked out of culverts during the duration of the tornado, but survived due to debris covering the entrance, preventing them from being sucked out (and most likely killed) This tornado also has the record for the highest recorded winds from any natural phenomenon on planet earth, at 302-320 MPH This tornado was also the first to have a “Tornado Emergency” issued upon it (highest category of any weather warning ever) If it’s not a reference, you at least got free facts here

Seriously this is a masterpiece. When a tornado is approaching & you pray or scream to the almighty, you will be saved period. Though the message is not just about nature's tornado: you can survive any kind of tornado whether it is one of depression, family arguments, or other things whatever is you face.
