You have to fix things before they break. The last owner probably didn't replace anything. You absolutely have to keep up in the cooling system or you're driving a ticking time bomb. I lost a idler pulley bearing and the overheat popped the coolant pipe under the intake. It was all brown and pastey inside. What sucks was I was literally going to order those parts when I got home. My car wasn't waiting. Fortunately I didn't nuke the head gasket and is still running at 209K.

the only beamers i’ve owned that r now gone were, what i like to call, user error 😅 im on my third i have a 2008 328xi now, AND now im sober ?! shits been a dream 😌 they’re only expensive to maintain IF you break them. OR if you wanna pay a car shop to fix them. power lock actuator, windshield fluid pump, n headlight bulbs needa be replaced on mine, car shop quoted me upwards of 3k for JUST the labor on those, w me buying the parts 😂 sooo lol no. $35 actuator, j replaced it works AMAZING no issues. $20 windshield fluid pump, $100 oem xenon headlight bulbs. i did all of that for under $200 🥰

We gave our 1998 AC Schnitzer 540i to our daughter. 400,000 kms on it and it still purs. I serviced it myself along with our 1993 Mercedes S500L. Love my Germans. Easy to work on.

I was about to say this, pretty much the only reason to even buy a BMW is due to all of them being rwd and being one of the few makes to sell a good chunk of manuals. Granted it was still more of a 1 to 5 share at their peak, nowadays I won't be surprised if they only offer stick to their economy trim, Europe only diesel engine.

Well, with those old BMWs my experience is: Everything brakes except the things you need to move. So, even when the car has technical difficulties, you can somehow make it - or you can improvise some repairs that can carry you to the next workshop, or 4,000 km away to Istanbul.

After replacing the hoses if it still loses coolant check for white smoke from the exhaust pipe when you first start the car in the morning. You may have a blown headgasket.

Had an e46 330ci for 16 years, was my dads and then my first car. It was incredibly reliable, did not drink much oil, did not overheat, did not ever have a serious engine problem. You know why? Because we looked after it. Sadly most people that own these drive them like shit, look after them like shit, and then they sell them. It was also built like a tank, one of the strongest built cars I’ve felt.

There are two types of BMW owners: kids/men acting like kids who can't figure out how to do basic maintenance and drive around with blinged out beaten out shoddy falling apart BMWs with ugly aftermarket "upgrades" and then there are those people who just enjoy a good car and never have any problems because they take care of what they own. You skimp out on the quality of replacement parts, you don't do oil changes, you don't switch parts when they start breaking but wait until they fail completely and take other parts with them, then you got no right to blame the brand. Cars are only ever as reliable as they are treated.

Not disagreeing, your right I do agree that the average person doesn’t know how to take care of their care and doesn’t bother to and it definitely causes a lot of issues that shouldn’t happen in the first place… BUT the fact of the matter is old beamer’s are a good bit more likely to have issues in the first place compared to other brands like Toyota or Honda. Yes BMW’s require more maintenance than other brands to be reliable, but that’s the thing.. they require stricter maintenance… therefore they are more expensive to own still

About 20 years ago BMW started using plastics for so many of their parts. The plastics break up and weaken over time. They used to be relatively reliable until they decided to cut costs my swapping plastic parts in for everything they could get away with.

Most vehicle manufacturers have gone down this route, nothing is built to last nowadays, unlike decades ago. History proves that Japan studied other countries products and made them better basically, hence why many British motorcycle manufacturers went bust back in the day. I still have and ride a 40 year old Yamaha myself.

I have a 250k mile Mercedes B-class. Very well taken care of. Stood for a month. Got in, sth like -5C, waited for glow plugs to do their thing and turned the key. Fired up in one crank. No smoke. That's what you call regular and preventative maintenance.

My N52 still kicks hard and it's a 2008. Maintenance is really important for a BMW. Easy to work on and very reliable when they're in proper working condition.

I'm American, and I love my E92. Though she pissed me off when her cam shaft cracked when a valve gave up on life and dropped some parts at 99k miles....a rather unlikely event. Doesnt matter. I rebuilt the entire engine and replaced the bearings while I was at it anyway. I even know where a blinker switch is. Then again I have lived in a few European and Middle Eastern countries, so....not the typical American, I suppose. As for Hellcats? I dont think you understand how a typical American car enthusiast views those cars. I'll give you a hint It's not good.

That’s such a myth, a new bmw costs like 30k. You can get an old one for 7-10k and only put like 1-2k per year in repairs.

Yes, for all the non-car people, you do have to give your car a drink. Feed the car with lots of water, doing it to your engine is also really good and keeps your car extra hydrated!

Yeah my old 318 was like that, I had to add coolant every week, no trace of it on the ground, even a specialist couldn’t find any leaks. Scrapped it in the end when it had other problems too. And yes it was serviced every year and looked after

I regret with every fibre of my being selling my E21 323i. Mechanically perfect, no rust, excellent factory paint (dark blue), 5sp manual, even the air conditioning worked! But the interior needed work and I was young and stupid and thought I'd just 'update to a newer car'. Tried looking for another one a couple of years back and the prices are unbelievable :(

As an ‘06 bmw 325i owner, this is quite relatable. Problem is that my car doesn’t have a dip stick to check the oil💀it has an electronic oil checker 😭 Still love my bmw tho. BMW’s may have their issues but there’s no doubt that they look aesthetically pleasing and are reliable. Reliability depends on the year certain BMW’s are made however
