Hello, fella. I don’t know how you are so polite to people who are so impolite. I’m in the building trade, started off with basic carpentry and kitchen fitting, now I do a lot of different things - plastering being one of them. I might not be able to plaster like a time served master but I can hold my own in what I need to do. I just bought a speedskim and it helped me, I even asked some spreads what they thought and they all agreed it’s a tool to be used and has its place. You keep doing what you are doing, mate. Pay no mind to anyone else.

Well I finally ordered an st speedskim and used it for the first time today. I was doing a ceiling over lite artex. I haven't done a ceiling in a long time it's been mainly walls so I was keen to try one. What a great tool it is for flattening out! Saved a lot of time. Highly recommend it. this is brilliant, thanks for the review. I'm going to get a longer one for the ceiling too. I'm a 'cowboy' too and what I found after spending a few days practising skimming on boards in my backyard is that I can get a finish that's 80-90% as good as a pro, that when painted, a regular person would have no idea it was done by a 'cowboy'.

Excellent demonstration like no other👍 Beginner myself and ordered the exact 600mm Ox semi-flex, having returned a Darby 48 inch from Screwfix >which I realised later not likely suitable for anyone new in the game, and for ceiling boarding not completely flat as a sag in one loft joist >caused by a roof strut incorrectly bearing it's heavy load on it and owner don't want correcting. Hopefully the semi flex will help follow the contours〰, but then maybe not☹

Having looked at reviews for similar products, they mention the advantage of a plastic blade is that it doesn’t draw the moisture out of the plaster and so you can go straight onto the second coat without waiting. Metal blades don’t work the same though, but don’t know why. Plstered a couple or ceilings in my time and it is hard, hard work, particularly when you are doing it alone. Reckon this tool will buy you a bit of time, which is vital. For rank-amateurs like me, it’ll also probably give a better finish as there is a definite technique to getting walls flat. Got some more to do soon and i will defo invest in this, or a similar product from another manufacturer; there are a few out there. Probs also worth having a couple of different sizes, although they’re a tad pricey. Still, getting a plasterer in isn’t exactly cheap, although they work hard for their money to be fair! Good vid Pousey and it sounded like it was tanking down at one point, but your roof seemed to be holding-up well! Wonder how many times you’ve wiped your head across your wet plaster though!?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
I got more plaster on my beard than my head! I found it a great tool to be fair. Like you say price is a bit steep although I think lockdown has bumped prices up. I've definitely seen them cheaper in the past. I could do with a labourer for mixing and cleaning, but going up and down two flights of stairs all day is cheaper than a gym membership so every cloud...! Thanks for watching.

I don't normally post replies on YT but had to in this instance, fair play if you think this helps you out, i used a 600 yesterday for the first time and first impressions are its a crap tool for plastering, its basically a straight edge, I've been plastering for 20 yrs and i always butter up the tape first when skimming, scratch coat i always flatten as i go along and the same with laying down second coat which means the wall looks flat and can sit for about 15/20 mins before i flatten it again, so ive been watching a few vids on YT on what way people are using this speedskim , so i scratched wall then edged with speedskim (looked shite after compared to when i use a steel trowel) it dragged the hell out of the angles so therefor leaves them messy, so i layed down with second coat and edged again and it still looked shite also impossible to run keep angles square because it has rounded edges !!, so i have went over this wall four times (2 coats plaster and 2 edgings which to me adds extra work? IMO it has no benefit or speed at skimming walls, its basically a glorified straight edge, ive also ordered the pole and the clamp bit that connects them all together but they will be going back, i have no idea what the metal blades are like and i might just buy one in the future to try out, i have the 18 inch OX flexi trowel for finishing (hard troweling) walls, i use the 16 inch OX semi flex for when walls are starting to tighten up and a 14 inch Marshalltown for putting on, walls look and feel perfect!! A little advice, after flattening your curve by going with it ..never go across it like you did in vid it just defeats the purpose, good job anyway and good luck :)
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I get your point but I find it very good for making a wall flat which can be done with a trowel but is more efficient with the speedskim. You're right about it being a straight edge, that is essential what it is but soft enough to use on plaster. Maybe I benefit more as I am not a plasterer by trade, but for me it is a great addition to the plastering tool kit. Thanks for taking the time to watch and reply.

Thanks, enjoy your videos a lot. Am going to get one of these, after a bit does the plastic get wear lines/grooves in from the plaster (sand) and then you end up with lines in the finish or does the plastic resist getting grooves in. Hope that makes sense, hope you can let me know.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE

It's pretty good. You can scratch it if you catch it on something sharp, but that said, it for flattening in, not finishing so a few small lines are no big deal.

Which one would you recommend for DIY. I'm renovating my 3bed house. I'm ok with my Marshall town trowel. Ceiling are 8ft high. Was looking into getting just 600 as it's just the one job. Or should I get the 1200 aswel for ceiling. Or go in-between and get 900
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
I've only used the 600 which was great for the tight angles I had, but I think a 900 would be nice on big walls/ 1200 maybe a bit long if your wall aren't perfectly straight and flat. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Do you think the S/S edged Speedskim would be a better bet? as I recon the non flexible blade would flatten better and not be prone to gliding over bumps and leaving them in, also any dings or small gouges could be filed out. Just guessing. And do know if the different replacement blades are interchangeable and will fit the same grip?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
I think the blades do fit the same handle but best to check, as they upgrade models all the time. As for the SS blade, I still thin a normal trowe is the only way to get wall 'flat' and not wavey and just use the straight edge to finish it off. One way to find out, give it a go! Thanks for the message, best of luck!

I’m no pro but I’m here because I have a fair size plastering job at home coming up, looking at one of these. I’d say from experience the way I’d benefit from a speedskim is for larger areas and for getting an even spread on both coats of plaster. For smaller areas, or for patching I personally wouldn’t opt for this it (probably) doesn’t have the rigidity required to patch small areas. Just my opinion and as stated I’m not a plasterer by trade but I do have a fair bit of experience

@@troydavies7311 thanks for the kind words. I know stuff by just learning, trying and doing. Did plastering for a year in college years ago, renovated all my houses, just pick stuff up as you go along I guess. And even I watch youtube for some advice. There's always more than one way to skin a cat. That's just a metaphor, I don't skin cats!

I too like your videos I do have 1 question though I see that you do a fair bit of electrical work I.e. install of bathroom exttacter for ex. And you state about bring somewhat qualified......I've done buts here and there in our home trying to stay within the regs etc but is 8t paramount about being "qualified?" If so are you personally qualified? Curiois that's all .......I've spurred one double socked from a ring main and another spur (different location) for my extractor deamped via a plug (so a socket rather than an isolation) so can still be switched off .....my electrician buddy told me he done this in his home as its not ducted externally . He said its allowed. Thing is although most lekkies would do a good job there are no doubt qualified guys that are not the best in their work and someone who is not qualified may at times do a cleaner job etc. Thanks buddy loving the videos

Be careful with what you call a non sponsored video mate, receiving the item free of charge in KZfaqs eyes is classed as payment and this video would be considered sponsored, I have literally seen channels be taken down for not declaring this. Also, I have one of these and they are great for smoothing :D

Yes great tool. As for paid sponsorship, I get free stuff regularly just to use, not specifically for a video. I just review the tools or products that I think might be of interest to viewers. Thanks for watching.

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE yeah well I'm yet to use mine, bought a 600mm to use at my brothers house in London. 3.3m ceilings and I've just taught myself to plaster. Getting great results too, love using the refina superflex to polish, seem to get ribbon like marks in final finish (not at all visible once dried) not sure if this is normal? Anyway can't wait to flat off with the ox.. Thanks for the video mate 💪💪

I hate lofts. The awkward little ones are the worst. I always well over quote. Nobody pays you when you are off work with pulled muscles and bad back. well done though.

Holy crap plaster is so much thicker than the drywall mud I use. Looks like you are trying to spread frozen peanut butter LOL

So you guys don't seem to have to fill all holes and tape? Plaster turn to rock or something?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
It's not to thick, it's ok to work with, probably looks thicker on camera. As for holes, I taped all joints and filled any holes. Love how you diyers call troweling up polishing and by the way if your beads aren’t level take them off and put them on properly. I’d stick to your day job if I was you
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
I still do the day job, this is just DIY as you stated in your comment so don't sweat! As for beads, the reality is in old properties you have to encounter some pretty bad walls which you'll never get perfect unless you spend hours building them out with bonding. It's just another solution. Thanks for watching and taking the time to provide your helpful feedback. Happy new year!
