Nice video. My late wife raised these for 15+ years. She had 4 main plants that were divided every spring and she gave away about 50 of the plants. I have kept up her tradition and last winter a woman gave me a green version of the plant. I have now mixed the colors in a few pots. Martha said that they thrive on neglect. Good Luck, Rick

These do not need to go dormant. If you keep them in optimal conditions, they grow happily year round. Mine is still going strong and it's three years old.

Thank you for this video! On a whim I bought an oxalis because, like you, it was love at first sight! I didn’t know what I was getting into nor did I care!

It’s basically a living piece of modern art. I’m trying to get a pot of them sometime this week, we just had garden centres open where I live in Ontario. Best part is if that doesn’t work out I can just order some bulbs

It's not an annual, its a perennial and it actually grows from corms, not bulbs; the two are similar in practice but botanically quite different. Thanks for the vide, love how you've styled it in the white pot, looks so crisp! :D

I planted several of these bulbs indoors this spring. (I live in Texas, USA.) I moved them outdoors in May and let them acclimate for a week before repotting them into a large planter with polka-dot plant, creeping jenny, caladium, and dwarf canna lily. I'm stunned how well they're doing in the heat here. We've had 3 weeks of temperatures between 90-103°F. I do have to water that pot every other day but the oxalis is showing no signs of heat stress. They really seem indestructible. Thank you so much for your informative video!

we have a 30 year old plain green one-never repotted, never fertilized. i never realized they could go dormant and we just suffered through the scraggly, (semi dormant) times and it always came back gangbusters when it had enough light. as leaves shrivel we just pop them out and it constantly renews itself. this past winter we finally put it under a good light and it was gorgeous all winter. many blooms constantly. it is unkillable (ours is in a pot with a drainage hole) so amazing! now i want a purple one!

Joanna, since you have not repotted your plant I. 30years, what size was the pot? And does it also mean that you never had to separate the cross. (Bulbs) either? Thanks

@@frankpeters6326 actually i think it might’ve been repotted once. it happens to be an 8” azalea (squat) pot. i think our neglect meant that the corms sorta died away on one end as they grew on the other, if that makes sense. it never seems overcrowded. it’s a bit prone to scale and looks pretty rough right now, but i have faith that it will return. it may be a good time to repot…

I had it growing in my garden but something kept eating the bulbs. I just dug the leftover bulbs up and planted in the pot. I hope that they will grow nicely indoors 🤞

You know that you can eat the leaves and the flower of the Oxalis. They had an acidic flavour like the lemon. Actually my grand mother used to put some leaves in the salad and the taste is amazing.

I've only recently got one of these but the leaves/stalks are drooping and some of the smaller/younger leaves are dying. I thought it might need watering but that hasn't helped. Any ideas as to what I need to do to fix this problem? I have put Plant pot gravel on top of the compost to stop gnats laying eggs in the soil and to help with the smell of the compost, it shouldn't but could this be the cause of the problem?

No need to buy more bulbs/ tubers ... at the end of the dormant period, you can split the clusters of bulbs and re-pot into other pots... I have given away 10 new pots of these over the years from an original one given to me by a friend who had split theirs during the dormant period ( split them in March/April ) then re-pot into fresh compost. Totally brilliant house plant!

I live in Texas and this plant is at the side of my house and I can’t get rid of it, I think their rhizomes. It’s a tough plant for sure with pretty pink flowers. A friend told me it’s edible, not sure about that.

when you the spent blooms or bent stalks do u cut at the base or at the top?
@smartgardenguide2550
@smartgardenguide2550 3 жыл бұрын
I cut at the base, but mainly for cosmetic reasons. It doesn't make too much difference to the health of the plant.

If you think these are sexy, you should try growing the variegated version. It’s a deep purple with a lighter burgundy variegation in the middle of each leaf. Super beautiful:)

They're really easy to grow from seed. They start as little corms (like a bulb) and I've grown them many times from these. Really easy and you can have an impressive looking plant in only 4-6 weeks. :)
