WHO AM I?
Hey there, I’m Cinzia DuBois. I’m a part-time, self-funded PhD student and KZfaqr, Podcaster and writer. I’ve been creating videos for over thirteen years. On this channel, I talk about dark and ancient history, literature and folklore. I discuss productivity, personal development, PhD, academia, and mental well-being on my second channel.
❗️DISCLAIMER
I am just a random student on the internet who loves reading, especially about ancient history and classics. My videos aim to make classics and ancient history interesting and accessible to everyone. I am not a professional or qualified educator, “expert”, historian or classicist. However, I ensure that all the information I use in my video scripts has been collated from numerous credible sources. Additionally, I am dyslexic, and I will mispronounce words. This does not stem from willful ignorance, and I try to research how to pronounce words before filming, but I often misread my phonetic spelling. In light of this, please do not rely on my video for an authoritative or reliable source of how to pronounce certain words.

I think my class prejudice may have been activated. I kept thinking 'Frustrated posh boys becoming violent and getting away with it. Fancy that'.

I absolutely adore how you bring the term used for an "aesthetic" to a far more historically accurate usage.

I gave an oral report back in high school about these battles between students and townspeople of Oxford. Even my teacher thought I was making this up (I was well known as a writer of fiction, even in my teens). I had to bring in all of my reference material for a follow-up presentation to show that this was historical fact, not some flight of fancy of mine. Neither my fellow students nor my teacher could believe that student riots were very common, with murders, rapes, all kinds of madness. And as far as the king coming down on the side of the students and the university, I would've told that old bastard to go pound sand.

It's not nice, but I see why the King sided with the scholars. His power rested on the military support of the aristocracy and his legal authority on the Church. The students were mostly sons of aristocrats training for the church. Injust but plus ça change

I love the history of English universities. They seem so ancient and the students really sound rowdy and romantic in the early modern era specifically. Can't wait to watch it all!

Yes I heard Oxford College had that whole gang thing going on in the middle ages. Getting into battle royale with the townspeople. I can picture that opening to the movie Gangs of New York.

A dark tale, indeed! I'd love to see you in a sumptuous BBC4 documentary, trekking around the relevant Oxford locations with a few student battle re-enactments as a background to your wry narration, perhaps!

What an interesting history. I was a student at Oxford in 2000 for a 6-week overseas study program, and heard some of the history of the city and the university, but not this part! I wonder if this is the origin of the traditional disdain that Oxfordians have for Cambridge, using the epithet "the other place" instead of saying "Cambridge"?

I'm not sure of the exact legal position in England but if it's anything like Paris University on which Oxford was modeled then many students joined because that way they were outside the jurisdiction of regular courts and only subject to canon law. Many never became priests and used their education for secular purposes, they were the foundation of the civil service of the time.

I realise it’s already fairly well covered, but the story of Horace De Vere Cole is an interesting one. He went to Cambridge not Oxford. Percy Bryce Shelley did attend Oxford until he was expelled on suspicion of atheism. Another amusing story.
