Mental Illness is devastating men, with suicide killing us at an unbelievable rate, very little care for us and an unsympathetic government, so let's have a panel of women to talk about it.

I do understand your concerns. This was not supposed to be an all woman panel. We had a cancellation at the last minute from the gentleman who would have evened out the conversation. We very much wanted a male voice on the panel and I do feel we spoke at great length to the differences between men and women when it comes to mental health treatment. I made sure I addressed this issue in my comments as men and mental health is a great concern of mine and one I don't take lightly. Julie

Thanks for all of the comments. I love it when people speak their minds. I just posted a podcast where my nephew David and I talk about educating kids about bipolar disorder. He was such a help to me when I flew to Oxford to be on the panel. He is 14. We started talking about my bipolar disorder when he was four. Let me know what you think. If you have a mental health disorder- you can learn to manage the symptoms. I struggle daily with my bipolar disorder, but as you can see, I made it to the panel. We can reach our goals in life! Yeah, the comments are odd. Around 48 minutes you discuss men standing up to speak out. Is there a place I can do this? I'd be happy to. I still haven't found much of a solution to my depression and I'm still not around people who are able to listen to me talk about it. Granted, I get on rants and get frustrated, but none the less. If there is a place I can go to talk about this and let people know, I'll do it. Thank you for mentioning the Ambien problems. I'll be sure to avoid it. I already told my doc no when he suggested it. He's not listening.

One of my favorite websites for men who want to read more about men and mental health is www.bphope.com. This is the page for Bp Magazine. Esperanza Magazine is from the same publishers and focuses on anxiety and depression. I love the men bloggers and writers on this site- many are my friends. Let me know what you think. I too was struck by the comment about men and eating disorders. How could I have been so naive and only thought that women deal with anorexia and bulimia! I do feel I learned a lot from being on the panel. Thanks for the comment. Regarding Ambien. I know people with depression and bipolar who take it without a problem. My Ambien suicidal episode happened in just a few days. It is a very personal drug. Julie

All in all, I really enjoyed this conversation and debate, but, did they really just compare online gaming and binge Netflix watching to heroin and substance abuse? That is a very subjective argument, and it also felt like many of these panellists disagreed with each other.

Hello. I think I was the one who made this analogy. Thank you for the question. Yes, I do see a connection between drugs, alcohol, food and video games and untreated mood swings. I would also add binge watching of Netflix! I'm simply saying that when we are in mood swings, it's natural for us to want to feel better. I've found that I and others with mood swings will turn to what makes us feel better quickly instead of choosing something that might not work as quickly such as meditation or exercise. For example, my issues with sugar are very interesting to me. Why would someone so smart choose to eat ice cream when depressed with the full knowledge that ice cream makes a person gain weight? It's because the ice cream works in the moment. I work as a coach for parents and partners- in almost all of the stories I hear, young men with untreated bipolar disorder are staying up at night to play video games. That is why I added this. We have always known the stats that 50% of people with bipolar have a drug or alcohol issue at some point when dealing with mood swings. I was a big, big drinker before I was diagnosed. We now know that video games, binge TV watching and social media are a part of these addictive behaviors. I deal with food issues largely from medications. My goal is to replace my immediate behaviors with behaviors that help my mood swings, but don't damage my life. I'm open about my struggles with this. Thank you for asking such a great question. Julie

Julie A. Fast. Hi Julie. Thank you for your reply. I did leave another comment on this video expressing how much I admired your passion and resilience on the topic. I do feel you're a role model for many, so thank you for arriving early to confirm your attendance at this debate. I would like to express my opinion here which may conflict with yours somewhat, but I'd very much appreciate your time with it. I feel it's a hard comparison to make. Binge watching Netflix and playing video games are not negative for one's health alone, unlike drugs and alcohol. And whilst one can argue that it can be a sign of one who's depressed, I feel it's no more a sign of this than one wearing different clothes or eating more or less. Esports for example is the biggest industry turn of the century, with more Individuals tuning in to watch an esports tournament per year than those who watch the rugby World Cup. Whilst I agree with the concept of those feeling unwell being more likely to spend more time playing games and consuming things such as Netflix, I feel a sort of stereotype is being formed around these things, which should be avoided. I hear this argument a lot by in particular, my older peers and superiors at university. I feel the younger generation in majority disagree. Also, it's a myth that playing video games in contemporary society is a lonely and 'solo' act. Anybody interested in psychology should invest some time learning about the online community I feel, as I for one met the majority of my good friends through video games, and I never play them alone, even if it may seem alone to a psychologist because I'm alone in the room. That has no effect. I am conversing and talking freely and openly about topics that concern me to peers. I truly believe the older generations fear this and associate it with all forms of illnesses and personally, even if only a student of 3 years in psychology thus far, I disagree with potency. Correlation is not causation. I know far more young men who stay up all night playing video games who are 100% healthy and happy, than those suffering with bipolar disorder. It's a completely healthy and ok habit, in some circumstances. Finally, I will say that my mother, and many others around me, suffer with illnesses such as cyclothymia and bipolarity, and my mother is extremely bad with it. She truly does go to China, on a regular occasion! She inspired me to study psychology and try to understand what was going on with her. Many of my role models have bipolarity, Steven Fry, Robbie Williams, Carrie Fisher, to name a few. I'd like to add you to that list. I may not agree with everything you said, but you expressed it with fire and passion. Thanks again for that. Kind regards.

TheSuperTrickey coming to the conversation somewhat late, but I think what she's trying to do is place Netflix binge watching and video games in the category of tools which people make use of in order to withdraw or avoid confronting things which we often see in depression, and as someone who works with children & families as well I think there's a need for parents to be more conscious about how their children or even their friends etc are using these tools. Is it in a positive way: are they making friends, forming connections, having fun etc. Or are they using it to avoid facing their depression. I do agree that I think there's a massive stigma within certain circles, particularly older generations around how they're used, and it's really about informing people of the facts. One positive for example I draw out of games is when working with young men they often find it easier to speak with me or have conversations while playing video games, relaxing as their focus moves away from just the conversation, allowing them to avoid eye contact if it's making them uncomfortable in a socially acceptable way, and often letting their guard down.

I find an interesting idea would be to psychoanalyze this comments section for its bias towards those with mental health conditions. In doing so i would like to inspire all you would be psychiatrists who use just that as a weapon against your profession. Also, Julie... i have heard very few talk on mental health in such an accurate way, as you have clearly lived by the rule of 'do unto others...' and achieved a very 'spot on' opinion. here goes the psychoanalysis... you are achievers... and with the achievers in society, those in this comments section particularly, who have little to no knowledge of mental illness personally, i am going to ask you a question. does the idea of idea of the acceptance of the word "crazy", somehow reflect on your own achievement? if so, and i know this to be the case with all of you, is it the case that you harbor fears and reflections on your own mental health, your mind, and your intellect, so much you use its fear and stigma to propel you into further academic capacity? i believe so. your childhood fear of the crazy people was irrational, before you realized it was almost socially acceptable to be stupid. this is a first sign of intellect in a person and distinguishes them from the crowd. i predict that from then on, you saw class. as with all things, and possibly in a few other ways, you saw due to predictable and wholly unjustified societal norms, that insanity was the worst you could be and the definition of what intellect wasn't. wouldn't you say then, that harboring these beliefs as a foundation of you was a depravity which could propell you into further self aggrandising thought. this would be in childhood the ego-centric self propagation of you. in adulthood, losing you primal connection with the some of your primal fears of yourself would damage your intellect and reduce your capacity for your ego to be sheltered behind the storms of your emotions. you think you are more than the mentally ill or unhealthy, but it is your own primality and ego fuelling your distancing and oppression of these concepts? right? you believe you are not it because your childhood told you you were special, without realising you were infcact capable of fallling into the classic trap of class-ist preconceptions fuelled by prestige and intellect. have you not noticed how your professors seem different to you?they have learned to accept vulnerabilities where you suppress them. this is the case at least for most of the internet generation. i cannot talk about all professors, as equally i cannot talk about all people at university, but you should know that class does not bind crazy to its will. equally, nor does petty distraction from the topics discussed here allow you the priveledge of not learning about your limitations - that is what university is partly for, as much as learning your strengths. you are not invincibe, but equally you are great. peace out. vote labour.

My biggest concern for being on this panel is the weight gain I have experienced due to my health concerns and my medications. I said to myself, "Ok Julie. What matters? Your message or how you look?" I hope that we can move past looking at how a person sits or what they wear and move towards what they say. I support your comments and your freedom to make them. Mental health changes us physically and wow, if we stick our heads in the sand- with our blue hair and weight gain, we will never speak. I struggle so much due to my bipolar disorder. Being in public is hard when you are not looking as you would like to look. I won't give up. Now that I manage my significant mental illness successfully, I will manage my physical health successfully. I am proud of myself and proud of getting up in front of the Oxford Union and doing my best. Imagine the struggle we go through to get our message to the world. No, I didn't eat shrooms- you can't imagine what I would be like with them in my system. HAHA. Julie

I'm no expert but would suggest finding a fun fitness program and forget about the weight but more about feeling good getting that endorphin fix. There are some fun classes like Zumba, or Silver Sneakers or Cardio dance party and things like that. Thanks for the talk. Forgive my snark. Sometimes, being an online talker turns me into a snob, so mercy and understanding please. If u want, I will remove comment. Say the word and it is done. No problem.

When you watch the video, we talk a little bit about the world of online communication and how it affects mental health.People are anonymous and can write things without thinking of the live human being on the other side who might see them. I live my life in the public sector. I read what people say about me. I can run and hide, or I can be human and see that I'm not perfect. A friend taught me that all comments are a chance for education. Weight gain in mental health is such a big topic that many people simple hide themselves from the world when the medications that keep them stable also cause big changes in the body. I can't hide this and I won't hide myself. I almost said no to this event due to my weight gain. How would that help anyone? Please keep your comment up. I am learning to handle what people say about me with grace. I am who I am. We can all get along and learn from each other. Look at what a nice exchange we are having now. All that matters is that we talk about student mental health. People are suffering and it doesn't have to be this way. I hope that by speaking out regarding my experiences, people who are struggling will go to one of the other women on this panel and ask for help! This is especially true for the men. Julie

Nope, knowledge in this area is driven by research, whether that be lived or scientific. i find that this particular panel was both. male thinking is too related to the preordained dominance heirachy and therefore biased... if you really want to go down that route :)
