I keep going back to this video because you really know how to handle swords and your cutting ability is just amazing to watch. You mentioned that this kind of qing dao is not good for breaking armor. Do you mean in the thrust? Is it because of how thin/flexible the blade is? If so, what kind of sword do you think breaks armor the best? (of yours of course :] )

When are we getting a sparring version of the Oxtail saber? It cuts well but at this rate I'm going to be out of sparring partners.

Many Chinese people dislike the niu wei dao, and the late Qing early modern style jian, thinking they're tacky/ugly. I think it's because people associate them with the "dark age" of Chinese history, unlike say the "glorious" Han and Tang dynasties. But judging only from functionality, they are actually pretty good designs

Ya ofc, weapons evolves and both dao and Jian had come to their final form, they are basically the newest and “best” design solution for the time from experience. Qing dynasty may have drag Chinese down but that’s politics, nothing to do with their understanding of melee weapons, and their weapon system and aesthetics were pretty much built on the Ming.

In my opinion I think it has more to do with the idea that swords or jian are more suited for gentlemen while dao were the items of ruffians and/or uncouthed bumpkins. Hence the biased towards jian due to the prevalent Confucius mindset of that particular era. I could be wrong but that's my take.

@@omegabulldog5001 Jian stopped being a status symbol in Qing dynasty as well. The Manchurians wore yan-ling-dao (curved thin blade a bit like saber), while the Han people were not allowed to carry weapons to court. Jian were mostly wore by Daoshi (Taoist monks) as a religious symbol (often made of wood), Chinese opera props, or by street performance guys to do tricks such as swallowing swords. Which means the normal Chinese people probably haven't seen many practical and sharpened jians for a few hundred years. That's why many still believe the jian cannot cut and only use for thrust, even though modern recreation tests show that they're perfectly capable of cutting
