In this video we test out a set of clever piano moving dollies for moving a heavy tool cabinet solo. These Roll or Kari dollies are made by the Enrick company enricko.com and designed for moving pianos. I rented them from a local Cresco rental yard for $23 for 24 hours. Well worth the money.

Hi Tom. We have these in a later slightly version, they are used here to move 2 door Mosler Safe vintage over 1000 pounds, and they work really well, someone smart made these special. We own ours they make sense in a micro machining operation I was told here when we bought them instead of renting them. Thank you for the share, Lance & Patrick.

I am a musician and I always had a set of Rol-O-Kari dual dollies because they were great for many things. I paid over $698.00 Canadian from Minnesota Zumbrota. That is where I ordered mine and I have them 45 years later and they still look like new. Great item and well thought of the reason I came to see your video was for the proper threading. I wanted to check my threading because they didn't come with instructions. Thanks a lot.

I remember my Dad using those back in the 50s to move things. The local grocery store loaned them out at no charge. I still have a scar on my finger from playing with one, when it lowered and pinched my finger on Jan. first 1960.

It was a comfort to hear you admit that operating the strap tension mechanism was not intuitive. I have to stop and think about how to work the ratchet on my appliance dolly every time I use it. This type of dolly is very useful. I have used the fancier version on many a "in the middle of the night one man moving jobs" rearranging heavy lab and shop equipment equipment. However, I will admit to letting a pro move things when it came to Bridgeports that had to go down a hall into an elevator! Thanks Tom!

Maybe a handy tip, but the front kick plate comes off those cabinets(at least Vidmars do) then a low clearance pallett jack will slide right in, jack up and drive to where you like. :-) I moved 30+ loaded Vidmars that way last year, main thing when moving them is strap the doors shut!! It will ruin your day if your cabinet goes over a dip and the drawers all decide to roll out together! Same goes for moving rolling toolboxes. :-)
@paulhunt598
@paulhunt598 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. I haven't encountered a tooling cabinet yet that didn't have a snap out toe cap on the front. Unfortunately, no tooling cabinet maker has yet realized that a standard pallet jack won't go under a loaded cabinet with the under clearance that they give you. Our shop had a bucket load of narrow spaced fork, low profile pallet jacks. These were ideal since even low profile pallet jacks are usually rated 3500 lbs. Crowded shops rarely allow front of cabinet access with a forklift, but almost always have space for a pallet jack. Front lifting with a pallet jack allows you to place cabinets side by side and tight against the wall. Toe kick covers and cabinets flush to the floor prevents chips and rolling dropped tooling from going under the tooling cabinet. Another tip... These cabinets are missing the locks meaning that the drawers can open while moving. The safety latches that prevent multiple drawers opening are easily overridden while under moving stresses. Prevent a tip over disaster by securing the drawers by locking the cabinet. Wrapping the cabinet with stretch wrap is fast and neat when keys or locks are missing.

The rental centers would be wise to put a tag on these devices directing users to this video. Also, the nylon wedges are a must-have. A little cousin to them are plastic shims you can get from the home improvement stores. They are stackable and essentially sacrificial when necessary.

I'm surprised you didn't set the cabinet on a couple pieces of square tubing to keep it off the floor a bit. I'd be afraid of rust with sheet steel sitting directly on concrete, and adding a bit of a gap would make the next move easier.

Tom: "I'm going to leave a little bit of space back there...." Me: "So my drill bits can roll back there and be lost forever, leaving me searching around the shop like an idiot for months before I get a new set." Hi Tom, I Have 9 Vidmar Cabinets And I Invested 100 per Cabinet Back When I Got Them And Put 4" Cast Iron Wheels On Each Cabinet. It Has Proven To Be A Good Investment Too Because They Are Easy To Move And Easy To Clean From Under. Another Improvement Was To Install Heaters In Each Cabinet. Now No More Rust. Ours Are Side By Side So Last Year We Made A Type Of Clamp Out Of Angle Iron And Put One On The Front And One On The Back And You Tighten It Up On One End. Both Together They Hold All 9 Cabinets Against Each Other Like As If They Were A Single Unit.

Whenever I buy a new piece of cabinetry or machinery for the shop, the first order of business for me is to weld up a mobile base that has one swivel and two fixed casters. This way you can literally turn the item on a dime. OSHA would probably have a hissy fit, but they are not welcome in my shop. Seriously you cannot do this if you have employees, but for a one man operation it works out great. Room is at a premium for me and this really makes a difference. I design the base so it clears the floor by 3/4 to 1 inch and the item sits down in it. Most bases are framed with 1x2 rectangular steel tubing on edge with flat plate welded to the bottom edge catching the corners of whatever is to fit. I have some very heavy items in such bases I.e. 20” Powermatic bandsaw, Ellis drill press, 3 ft radial drill &. Etc. Over half of my shop has been in these bases for over 30 years. There has never been a problem. Nothing can fall over. Nothing can even tip. I have a Bridgeport in such a base, but I got gun shy when I built the base for it and used 3/4 x 2 solid bar for the frame and put two swivel casters up front rather than just one. I know, I know, the weight of the machine table going back and forth will not keep it level and thus cause error in the part, but I do not get NASA contracts, and to be honest I would put my work on it against any floor anchored Bridgeport. I did add leveling pads into the base when I built it, but I have never needed them. If you go this route do not skimp on the casters. I would recommend wheels that are ball bearing rather than sleeve bearing and bigger items get bigger casters/wheels.The real benefit to doing this is that you will have unbelievable clean floors. It’s one of the first things other toolmakers and machinists comment on when visiting.

Rolla lifts occasionally show up at industrial auctions, but the riggers usually snap them up. Theres a similar type of safe dolly called an andeson dolly. Much simpler design than what Tom used, and can be fabricated by someone capable of welding, vs the 600 bucks a pair they get on Amazon.

Looks like those dollies have seen better days and have been left outside most of their lives. Seem to work quite well though. Edit: Found this link that shows a different way of threading: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5l1gKd2mJnRnqc.html I have never seen a recommended threading style that leaves the tail behind a buckle or twist in the webbing, however Tom's threading method seems more secure and uses additional friction to retain tension. Some buckles are more obvious than others. I have encountered an individual who could not figure out how to release ratcheting straps and cut them instead … Both of us are engineers, one of us is now in management.
