punpun mama arc is unironically my favorite arc, it somehow made me sympathize with her despite how she treats her son. the revelations that happen in it, the motives of her actions and why she acted the way she did, made me at least understand where she came from. I don't think it justifies all the shit she did, and i think she also knew that, and the first and last time she tried to be sincere and honest to herself and try to make up for her mistakes but being unable to do so made me feel shit, especially when punpun, after he discovers some of the truth about her mother, still could not feel sympathetic towards her. I totally understand it especially if try to put myself in his shoes, but it really hurt as a third person witnessing and following the whole story. Every kid deserves a healthy home environment, man

And I especially liked how it was in stark contrast to what was happening in Punpun’s life at that moment. [Spoiler if someone who hasn’t read it is reading this ] In one frame his dad is talking about how kind and considerate he is and in the very next panel, Punpun is beating a guy shitless near the convenience store without any tangible reason. It shows just how much Punpun has changed( regressed or been broken) and just how little his dad knows his current son, and the overall disconnect time and lack of communication brings in human relationships.

I first read Oyasumi Punpun in January of this year (2021) while I was in a very dark and difficult emotional place. And even though I really felt it, it didn't broke me. It actually helped me. This and No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai. Reading all this painful experiences and thoughts that all the characters have, being able to empathize with them actually helped me process and rationalize my own dark and painful thoughts and feelings. It helped me to put them in words so I can better deal with them instead of just being overwhelmed with a dark cloud of bad feelings. That's why it's my favorite manga and one of the most beautiful pieces of media I've ever consumed.

Hey if anyone reading this wants a manga recommendation that hits like a truck, I recommend Annarasumanara. I would say it's about magic, but it's a very different kind of magic. There's so much to the story and the characters really unfold before your eyes making you think twice about whether you really understand someone or not. Also the art is beautiful and gets really creative in so many areas in contrast to its darker heavier scenes. It's a dark physiological story but it also is thought provoking in its slice of life moments. It can also get hyper realistic, you will have that eerie feeling once you enter the magician's carnival. 100% recommended.

This manga broke me in so many ways, at first I felt really identified with the character in many ways, and slowly I started realizing the path I was following wasn't the greatest... This manga does what others are scared of, showing how crude reality, morals, relationships, family, religion, beliefs and growing up can be.

I like that Connor brought up Bojack Horseman during the conversation b/c when I was watching it for the first time, it kept giving me flashbacks to moments in Punpun in terms of existential dread (especially during the scenes w/ their mom). To me they both share a similar level of depressingly brutal honesty that I love in any story~

I hated how I could relate with Punpun in some parts and making me remember the regrets I have in life, but it did brought closure that I'm not alone. There's time where I wished it ended right there and then but I would see like 40 more chapters left. By the time I got to the end I just sat there like "Fuck...that was something."

I read it in two days. It left a bigger impact on me than most media I've seen. It really is life unfiltered by a traditional narrative. The characters truly feel like real people and the problems they face are painfully relatable and honest in how they're presented. It probably has the best representation of depression I've ever seen as well. Read it when you're ready. It is a gut wrenching story on many levels.

Oyasumi Punpun will be one of those piece of media I CANNOT revisit. I essentially did what Joey did. I binged it through one day, way into the next day, like 5 am, and couldn't sleep. It is really well written, but it is absolutely heartwrenching. I did cry during a good chunk of the latter half, I won't lie. It is realistic in a lot of ways, and it can be so unfair, but that is true to life.

I remember reading punpun through a MAL recommendation of top mangas only. No idea or any insight on what it is, i even thought it was a wholesome slice of life kid's manga with realistic and beautiful panels. Oh boy was I not prepared for it, I've read it in a span of 1 week and with every day a part of me glooms to depression as if it was I going through it all. The ending was brutally frustrating and fucked up but was one of the best endings I've read. This manga was the first one to connect to me in a personal level, like I can't distinguish it from fiction to reality, it felt so real, and familiar, warm yet unpleasant like how my life goes. But as far as recommendations go, I'll definitely recommend it, not out of pure intentions but want to fuck up people and see their emotions go with it. Sorry not sorry hahahahaha

punpun for me was just one crazy ride, I remember starting reading it and realizing what kind of themes it was tackling and thinking "this is gonna depress me, maybe I should stop" but I couldn't, I just needed to know what happened or else I wasn't gonna get any sleep, so I kept reading it until I finished it and... man the feeling that I got after finishing it, I was like, no I don't wanna get depressed but then thought, I think is better for me if I do, so I did and I couldn't stop crying like, but it felt kinda good, like I needed this. I'm not joking when I say that it changed me, I wasn't the same person when I finished it, even my mom thought I was different (in a good way), so yeah, it's just amazing, it really makes you reflect on yourself and teaches you so many things. But I can't recommend it to anyone because it gets HEAVY, and if it ever gets an anime Imma be like, nope, once was more than enough.

There's something about a specific panel in the final chapter of Punpun that just gets me. I don't know what it is, but even out of context it just makes me well up with tears. I originally read it at a time where a number of the character's experiences hit close to home, and when I saw that image as I was finishing the final chapter while up super late, the waterworks started and just didn't stop. Don't know when the tears ended, cause I fell asleep before then. And even to this day, that image is enough to get those same waterworks going. Genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of art I've had the (dis)pleasure of experiencing, and certainly something worth reading. Though, the sentiment shared in the comments is very true, recommendation of Punpun must come with a warning, be it sensitive content or the fact it really shouldn't be read whilst in a bad headspace. If you're okay with that though, Punpun is uniquely lifechanging, and in-spite of everything I really recommend it.

After reading a lot of times, being the first when I was a teen in a very bad mental state and push me to an even worst place... I think Oyasumi Pun Pun remind me in some way to the last chapter of the end of evengelion or the last movie of the re build of evangelion, since in Oyasumi Pum Pum even after a lot of fked up moments and situations happens... there is a constant idea about the importance of having relations with others and the idea that is important to accept that we are flaw in many ways but there is people that care about us and that you care about as well, and how important this relations are to improve as a person. Ofcourse Oyasumi Pun Pun put a bigger focus in how a toxic relationship or being hurt many times can lead a person into a becoming almost a monster, but I think most people focus ONLY in this part of the history and ignore the rest, I did as well for the longest time until I re read it almost 5 times, then you see the other really important part that make this manga so great and the best I ever read.

that one chapter were the narrator describes normal things of day to day idle life like going off and on of alarm clock, people, crowd, train, school, weather, etc and it ended with the line " punpun was just fine today again" as if it was another normal thing to expect had me in tears because I somehow related to it. Everyday when I am asked "how are you", I've always replied with " i'm fine" like its a norm despite of how turbulent or low I was feeling at the time, to the point that I find it weird and unusual thing to say "I'm not fine " . Because the narrator said that Punpun was just fine that day too, I understood very well, deep in my soul that he wasn't okay at all. In fact he has never been okay. I saw a piece of myself in him.

I've read this manga multiple times. While a lot of the things Punpun goes through don't mirror mine, the feelings he felt throughout the manga are the exact feelings I've felt throughout my life, and still do. The part that hits the hardest is when Punpun doesn't know what to write in Sachi's notebook and he starts thinking about his childhood and compares it to his current life where he realizes what kind of person he has become and the kind of life he's been living. It's too relatable and it's where I start to really tear up. The rest of the manga just keeps that same tone and it doesn't let up until the very end. I love this manga so much and I'm glad I gave it a chance.
