For whatever reason, I keep buying Ozark Trail folding knives, looking for those hidden gems. Most of them are usable (there have been a couple that are really bad) but almost all have 1 or more noticeable flaw that keeps me from being able to recommend them. That little slipjoint is ok for what it is. I will say, if you can find their holiday packs - they are a noticeable step up in quality without a price jump. For under 10 bucks, I don't judge them on steel choice or handle material, just feel and function. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for that great comment. I don't judge them for the blade steel either, it is at such a low cost that it's very understandable.

I'm glad to see Ozark Trail knives getting some love. Its been at least 4 years since the last time they made the channel. Which is a shame because some OT knives are solid little beaters. Couple things to toss out. First the steel... For the no name steel, its going to be either a 420 stainless or the Chinese equivalent 3cr13/3cr13mov hardened to the low 50s HRC. Years ago I saw a post on one of the blade forums that identified the blade steel. The poster said something to the effect that the Ozark trail knives are made in "his" factory in China and that they used a 420 stainless steel. The thing is I can't remember which forum I saw it on so I don't have a link anymore. I did a quick check and it seems getting forum posts dating back to 2016-ish is hit or miss so sorry for no link. Second the slipjoint Ozark trail knife (trapper pattern) doesn't need a stop pin. It has a kick that does the same thing. If you look at the base of the blade there is a protrusion that sticks out below the blade. That's the kick. When the blade closes the kick slams into the spring and liners in the bottom of the handle before the edge contacts anything that will damage it. At least if the designer and manufacturer did his job right. If he didn't, then you'll see a flat spot on the edge. If a traditional knife has a kick, it is usually pretty safe to let it close on its own. Of all the slip-joints/traditionals I have (and I have a lot since I have mine and Dad's), I think I've only run into 3 where the kick didn't protect the blade. When that happens, sharpening the knife a few times usually fixes the issue. Finally for the modern folders... I tried disassembling/adjusting them in the past. Like you, I came to the conclusion it is best not to try. I couldn't get the pivot screw to release or tighten on either of the models I tried adjusting. I swear I think they put super-glue or red locktite in there. The screws will probably strip out before you get them loose. Or worse they'll just spin because its a free spinning pivot. Either way not worth the effort.

It's probably made of some 3Cr variant (420 is pretty much in that group). The kick - yeah it has one. THANKS for pointing that out. But the steel in the inside of the spine comes up in a bump in the middle of the handle and if you let the blade just SNAP down hard you can get a rolled edge, mind did. I am sure that after it has been re-sharpened a few times that the edge will then be protected more completely. Many, especially the lowest cost modern folders use threadlocker in the screws. And since the cheapest ones also use cheap screws they are super easy to strip out. So for the knives in this price range I would not take them apart. But there are many production folders that I regularly adjust and two products help me out in that regard, both made by VibraTite - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLhkpa6Sr9TMk40.htmlsi=K3XEUQw_O8qFDMRr (the video is old, and I would do a better job of it today but it gets my points across).

At some point we can easily find ourselves away from home and without a knife or much money. Good to know these may be viable stopgaps. Or even users for awhile. Thanks for the overview.

If for nothing else, they are good for learning how to profile and sharpening blades. Here in Denmark they would still cost around 100 Dkk (14+ish USD).

Yes indeed, the lowest cost knives have a place in learning to profile and sharpen.

Great review, as always! I’m also very impressed with the general consensus in the comments; no, these are not great knives however, can meet a need for whatever reason. A great reason that I have not seen mentioned, yet, is to keep a knife like this around to loan to someone especially, if you don’t think you will see it again..
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 6 ай бұрын
Yes Dave. You don't want to loan out one of your better knives because anyone who is not a knife person is likely to abuse (not intentionally - probably) or loose your knife.

Cool. They do make some complete duds, but most are fairly decent for the price.

When I began collecting knives, my nearest Walmart carried knives. Now they don’t. Not Kershaw, not Ozark Trail - nothing.

There should be some source for low cost knives, but if there isn't you can check out AliExpress or similar websites - but I would prefer to buy such knives at a local store. In the midwest USA there is Menards. Here in Canada we can often find knives on sale for a reasonable price at Canadian Tire stores, but not as cheap as Walmart USA.

I do plan to go to Missouri for a bit of a family gathering this summer. Maybe I will stop in and buy some of their Swiss-Tech knives. Or I might just order them before then. We can get some Swiss-Tech knives in Canada, so yeah, I should look into getting one (or more) of them.

How is it possible to sell knives for so cheap? Just the materials/ parts alone must cover the retail price?
@jkirschy
@jkirschy 6 ай бұрын
Economy of scale, cheap materials, low cost labor... Those combined would be my guess.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 6 ай бұрын
@jkirschy is correct, I believe. Anything costs less when you can set up an assembly line to make loads of them and if you pay the workers as little as possible (including the workers at the store where they are sold).

I am not a salesman, just a reviewer. I have no vested interest in where you shop, you do what is right for you. I have a strong preference to shop from small (one off) stores myself.

Junk.
@jkirschy

I don't agree with you. The really old, $2 OT knives were junk in the same way the Dollica's are junk. But the ones Jake was talking about are usually decent beater knives. They are safe designs that use cheap materials. They won't be family heirlooms, but if all you want to do is spare your good knives unnecessary wear and tear at work, they work well enough.

Hey Jake, do you know why they don't sell these in Canada? I wanted one of the Ozark trail fiskars hatchet knock offs but it seems like most ozark trail products aren't brought here, besides sleeping bags and tents.

I do not know why, but I suspect it all comes down to politics. Such knives are scary and "dangerous" and not appropriate for the general Canadian public. I would not be surprised if there was pressure from our current government to remove such knives from Walmart stores. They did have such knives in Canadian Walmart stores before the current Liberal government came into power. Is that just a coincidence? maybe or maybe not.
