There was always that so called competition between Randy Rhoads and EVH , I’ll put it this way Eddie was so fun to listen to it was party music just good rock n roll music but with Randy it was so deep you feel something in your heart throughout your body when you listen to songs like Diary of a Madman , You Can’t Kill Rock and Roll , Revelation Mother Earth etc , RR was the complete musician and in my humble opinion the greatest guitarist to ever live ...

At the time, Ed was a little sensitive about another guy being so highly regarded. There's a telephone interview from 1982 that was recorded where he just accuses Randy of using his tapping technique. But their actual styles of playing are so different. One thing, Ed didn't ever solo like Randy did in VH songs.

EVH was a great guitarist. But I can't stand Van Halen's music, it's trivial kind of drunken fratboy stuff. Hot for Teacher is entertaining but who would take that song seriously? Whereas the stuff with Randy gives you goosebumps. Revelation Mother Earth, Diary of Madman it's deep, musically, lyrically, and thematically. Just my take tho.

what people have to remember is that randy was only 25 years old when he died. to many people he was still just a kid, and he had only just gotten started with all of this. i read in an interview once that he wanted to come up with something on guitar that no one had ever done before, but said that it would unfortunately take him awhile. in my opinion if he would have lived another 5 to 10 years i think he would have achieved his goal and changed the music landscape even more dramatically.

I absolutely love the band jam. It's weird hearing Brad Gillis do it a few weeks after Randy's death. A lot of people don't like Brad Gillis but imagine what he did for a minute. He learned every Randy Rhoads riff in two weeks, including the band jam and went out on stage and didn't miss a thing. I mean of course he's not Randy and i don't care for his style but I have spent years trying to learn Randy's riffs and I am still not there yet.

Rhoads was amazing. One of my top 5 all time guitarists. Imagine what he could have done if he lived to 70 or 80. As a kid, he was the best I ever heard. I still think he's the best 40 years later.

I got to see Randy Rhoads (Diary of a Madman tour) in either Jan or Feb 1982 at the Richfield Coliseum south of Cleveland, OH It's torn down now...I was in 10th grade. Randy fucking blew us all away! It was incredible,,,he was so fucking good!! I was so lucky to see him right before the accident. I couldn't beleive it when I heard it on the radio, just days after I saw him.

This is so awesome!! It was colder than hell outside that night. I clearly remember walking into the Met Center and getting a strong whiff of weed right upon entering the building. First experience with a major contact high lol. The highlight was RR and the coolest ever medieval stage set up I had ever seen and ever will. There were little hooded dwarves running all over the stage and two huge torches lit on each side of the drum kit. I was with my older brother who had noticed that Tommy Aldridge broke one of the drums with his hand during his solo. Later in the show, this HUGE mechanical hand came out of the center of the stage (from out of the large stairway I think) and this big hand had Ozzy standing upon the palm of it as it slowly moved forward and reached into the center of the crowd. Once it got there, the middle finger stood straight up. Lol...I could go on for ages. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen in my entire lifetime. Everything about it was excellent, and my little 13 yr old mind was completely blown. I walked into school the next morning with my new ghoulish-looking Diary of a Madman concert t-shirt on and wore it proudly that day. My 8th grade English teacher looked upon it with horror...👍

Not to mention that it was severely cold and there was a blizzard that night as we were driving from the suburbs into Bloomington, man it took forever to get there. I remember after the show there were so many cars that wouldn't start. That lineup was the best metal band to ever be assembled. I am so pissed off about the way Randy lost his life, once again a fucking stupid alcohol/drug involved accident and it wasn't his fault.

I believe that most people forget that Randy was playing like this in the late 70's and early 80's. Absolutely no one could play like this then. Eddie Van Halen wasn't even a close 2nd. Too many people compaire his playing to many guitarist of today and don't take into account that there has been almost 30 years of progression since his death. So much of Randy's work influences many of today's guitarists. He's still one of the guitar greats.

I was at this show and there was an actual blizzard that night and was so cold out tons of cars didn't start after the show. It really was a great show and I'm glad that I got the chance to see it. I first saw Randy Rhoads with Ozzy in 1981 at the River Flat jam on the west bank of the U of M here in Minnesota. I was in the front row for that, You had to see Randy live to believe it. I know that he always got compared to EVH but they were two very different players. Randy just sounded fresh and different, EVH had already made his invaluable mark on the scene, Randy added a new element and style. Both are sadly missed.

Also, let us not forget that Randy was also learning classical guitar, (which is a very technical style), before his death. He never had sloppy technique. He was a very accomplished and astute guitarist. In the studio Randy would mic his amps at different distances from the cabinents. This could make it sound sloppy, but the desired effect was to make his sound more full. No one has ever been able to copy his sound. I wonder what his playing would be like if he were still alive today.

His 2:53 finger tapping is some of the coolest ever. At 3:01 he's doubling down on his right hand pick tap and syncing on the left hand pull off. Beautiful stuff.

Jehe Jshxyehs I checked it out and you are correct the 2:53 to 3:00 part is picked pull offs. But the 3:01 stuff here is absolutely right hand/hammer finger double taps. The Quiet riot reference is simple one tap finger tapping. The advanced right hand tapping came later - and first time I heard it was in Flying High solo.

You're right about that. From what I've heard from most Rhoads enthusiasts is that his solo from Tribute was edited and doctored mildly and that his solo didn't really come off sounding at all like it sounded for Tribute. But who knows anyway. Food for thought I guess. I wasn't there, so I'll leave it at that. I really wish they would release some official live video/dvd footage from the Rhoads era. Come on Sharon!!!!!!!!!!

Pure perfection of the guitar! Randy had it and he could play anything, and if i read correctly this was all improvised before the show in about an hous work, only one hour and randy managed a 4 minute solo that has been the greatest i have heard! Randy Rhoads perfected his playing to such a level that very very very very few see, so far only 3 total know this. Randy Rhoads, Michael Angelo Batio, and Ynwie Malmsteen. Suchand Amazing level but only Randy had it, no one will match Rhoads!

I can't describe what that tone sounds like but it's amazing! I had the same equipment as Randy did and the same set up as him and still didn't get the same tone. I want that tone! Like I said I don't know how to describe it... sounds like... creamy or like a keyboard or organ with chorus with high midrange and kind of muddy distortion.

I bet absoultely anything that 1:50 to 3:44 would have eventually evolved into a song that would have been on Ozzy and Randy's next album, and it would have owned blizzard of oz and diary of a madman, and Randy would have been hailed the next Bach or Mozart. Shame they didn't put something like this on the tribute album!

I shit my pants when I heard 1:50-3:44. I've never heard anything like that from him before. Jake E. Lee, in my opinion, has a broader range than Zakk Wylde. Randy's awesome power to me, was I felt like he knew the guitar neck so well, he could play whatever he wanted and have it be in key. That meant fresh performances every time he played, almost like Hendrix...but uh...different.

The band jam was epic. They started doing it later on before Randy Rhoads Died. But I feel like the direction of how the band jam was composed would’ve been the next level of the 3rd album Randy Rhoads would’ve made because he was about the music and not showing off with tricks and flash. That’s what separated Randy Rhoads from Eddie Van Halen. One was about party, flash, tricks, fun vibe. The other just serious, about the music, compositions, the notes. But both had the feel though and smoked a lot of Cigarettes to say the least. R.I.P Randy Rhoads.

More importantly Brad Gillis was playing in Rubicon and trying to get NR off the ground and in rubicon he wasn't playing the kind of stuff he would play later. I liked that Brad stepped into a very difficult situation and is an awesome player. EVERY one who played with Ozzy was great in their way. I have no beef with any of them - only Joe Holmes didn't record so we don't know that angle, but he was onstage for 5 years
