Convergence was achieved during MG harmonization on the ground by hoisting the ass end & calibrate with paper targets at a predetermined distance. The K14 Gyro reflector gunsight would calculate through it's computing mechanism distance, lead & bullet drop. It used the diamond & circle "pipper" reticule/reticle.

Love War Birds, DL'd DCS the other day, and bought the P-51 D, and the F-86, but want to learn the Mustang first. Tried aerial gunnery practice chasing a transport plane, but had a horrible time trying to shoot it down. It took ages. Then I stumbled across your video, and I'm improving. Many thanks, and *subscribed*.

Glad I stumbled upon your channel! Lot of great info on the warbirds, besides the usual "startup, taxi, takeoff, landing" tutorials. I'm proficient in the Spitfire, but just started learning the P-51... I know about all of the accelerated stall characteristics, but I can not manage energy or fight with this thing at all. I get high speed stalls, but I'm not even pulling hard, or even close to what I would in the spitfire... Turns feel easy, like sightseeing flight, and I still stall it. It's easy to takeoff and land though! LOL Would love some videos on how to best employ the P-51, tactics, fighting, maintaining energy. Anyway, keep up the great videos!

Thanks, glad you enjoy them! And excellent suggestion, I'm brainstorming ideas for a video like that. For the Mustang in the meantime, without any sort of haptic feedback (Butt Kicker, bass shaker, or Jet Seat), you really only get three clues for turn performance, and the onset of an accelerated stall. You have the G meter, which is below and to the left of the engine triple gauge (oil/fuel pressure, and oil temperature). Second is the gun ports on the wings start whistling at higher angles of attack, and whistle louder as you pull a tighter turn. Lastly, the aircraft will buffet and shake just before it stalls. Hope this helps!

If you are having problems with the high speed stalls in the P-51, I found they occurred when pulling G's with the ball not centered in the turn and bank gyro. It doesn't take much pull on the stick to stall if the ball is off center. I found I had to look down at the ball frequently during a dogfight, which helped a lot, but it has the negative of having to look off the target momentarily.

Thank you Diesel Thunder, youve been helping me so much with operating the P-51D. I am so happy that I learned how to fly that thing, my favorite one out of all the warbirds! Thank you! (Q: What head tacking do you use? VR? TrackIR?)
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 6 ай бұрын
My pleasure, glad the videos helped! For my head tracking I am using OpenTrack, which uses a modified PlayStation PSEye camera. The only mod I had to do was crack it open and remove the IR filter. On my headset I have an IR LED clip attached which points toward the camera. This is a DIY setup, which at the time cost me about $40 to put together, whereas TrackIR was about $160. I have a video up where I go through my flight sim setup here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qd9-f5x9kq7FY4U.html

I use the range adjust to circle the plane at whatever distance he is actually at so I can put the center piper directly on the place of impact then fire. Trying to get the enemy to a perfect 1100 ft should be the 2nd or even third priority not the first when using the K14.
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Жыл бұрын
That’s a good technique as well! Take the shots that you can even if it isn’t at the ideal range. 1,100 is a good starting point, with the most concentration of rounds. I personally don’t like taking long range shots since the rounds really diverge and lose their energy.
@KomradeDoge
@KomradeDoge Жыл бұрын
I've found decent success with setting a range on the sight and flying my target into that. There's 2 strategies that work well, yours where your range is always moving, and this one with a stationary range moving the plane to meet the geometry. Both work well, it's entirely pilot preference.
@mitch_the_-itch

@@KomradeDoge The idea a pilot would wait for the perfect shot before taking it is hard to digest, lol. You can do it any way you want obviously but how did WW2 pilots do it?
@KomradeDoge
@KomradeDoge Жыл бұрын
@@mitch_the_-itch it's no different than how you do it, "waiting" for your range cues to line up while you adjust them to for your target. Becides, I'm not saying your method is wrong, I'm just telling you there's 2 prevalent strategies and that's where this video's tips come from.
@mitch_the_-itch

@@KomradeDoge In an ideal World you want to use 1100ft as the aiming distance of course. That said a dogfight is rarely if ever going to be in ideal circumstances for long. My thinking is that pilots in the day took almost any and every shot they could. At least until air superiority is achieved.

Thanks Diesel, great video. Setting the range to 1100 yards has helped me greatly. Question, where is your prop setting when you are dogfighting against fighters. I have a hard time keeping up with them yet I know the P-51 is a faster plane? Also, for those who are having problems with the high speed stalls in the P-51, I found they occurred when pulling G's with the ball not centered in the turn and bank gyro. It doesn't take much pull on the stick to stall if the ball is off center. It depends on the fight, but if I can keep it at max continuous (2,700 RPM, 46 inches MP) then I will. If I need more power, then I run up the RPM to max (3,000 RMP) and then push up the throttle to full (61 inches), and if I have a chance I'll note the time as this setting is limited to 15 minutes before needing to pull back the power so you don't overstress the engine. And if you really need the power, you can engage War Emergency power (67 inches), but are limited to 5 minutes at a time running this power level. Most fights are over before hitting this limit though. For the slipping in turns, keep with it and you'll get the feel of it without having to reference the gauges as much!

Thanks for the video, but my biggest problem is keeping up the speed. I've done this mission and I can't get the speed above 150 and am usually around 100. I've checked keybinds and have watched Grim Reapers' video on engine management, but I just can't get any speed. Any thoughts?

@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Жыл бұрын
There are some guided lessons that walk you through on how to work the various systems and controls with each aircraft. Those are under "Training", selected from the main menu. I am really enjoying the new Normandy map, I recommend it! For the aircraft, the P-51 is definitely more forgiving to fly compared to the Bf-109. Mustang has the best ground handling qualities of all the currently available warbirds, and the widely spread landing gear helps a lot with takeoffs and landings. The Bf-109 and Spitfire are a lot more challenging with their narrow gear. If you are on the standalone version of DCS, you can always do the 2 week free trail of each aircraft, and see what you'll like. And you can trail each aircraft for two weeks every six months. The DCS summer sale is likely around the corner too (June/July).

what you could potentially do is use the Replay function and position the in-game camera at the gun camera position. If you wanted to add film grain or something like that, you could use a screen capture program to record the replay, then add effects in post.

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS with an 8" extension on the joystick (throttles are not modified), with a set of Saitek Pro Flight rudder pedals, and OpenTrack head tracking. X52 is a good stick, and was the successor of the stick I used before buying the Warthog setup, the Saitek X45. I am personally not a big fan of twist grips as the rudder axis, much prefer pedals.

I don't know how people fly warbirds so damn smoothly. They fight me every step of the way. Just rolling right or left they fight me and don't want to do it. They'd rather drop out of the sky than listen to me. It's so damn frustrating. I literally have to do everything half as fast as I see everyone else doing it, otherwise they just shudder and drop nose down. Like, I even watched Growling Sidewinder do rolling scissors in it against an SU-57. How tf? That's complete BS. Edit: Also. The P-51 and P-47 are absolutely useless with their .50cals. They do LITERALLY no damage unless you can actually manage to get 5-6 rounds into the engine(which is next to impossible unless you're a friggin Expert pilot) or if you can get rounds in the cockpit(even harder than the engine) I hate it so much. I literally had to put over 40 rounds into a FW-190 AI to get it to crash. It took 10+ minutes. I counted every time the damage text popped up along with every time I saw a flash(because even if a round hits it doesn't necessarily cause "damage") it took 14 damage notifications along with countless sparks that I lost count of after 20. It didn't even destroy him either, he just lost so much coolant his engine couldn't keep him in the air anymore. It's like this every single time I fight an AI too. I have to chase them around for minutes and minutes putting rounds into them while they dance around and I struggle to keep up. So annoying. I tried the Mosquito and absolutely forget that one. The guns on that thing are even worse than .50s. It has cannons but the velocity and trajectory of guns and cannons are abysmal and you literally have to be within 100 feet to get rounds on in that thing lmfao... Just stick to the FW-190 D version. It's the best Warbird in the game. Rant over..
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation Жыл бұрын
You have the keyword there, smoothly. Yank and bank is can be fun but can hurt your maneuvering by over doing it (some airframes can get over stressed as well). Smooth movements on the stick and rudder go a long ways in the warbirds. A joystick extension helps out a lot for that too. The warbird AI flight model does leave some things to be desired, and they don't yet have the new dogfighting flight model that was introduced on the jets. I haven't had too much trouble out of the 50 cals, and find them harder hitting since they've updated the ammunition belts on them. I do find the British .303 machine guns a bit lacking, but those are also much smaller bullets too.

Having recently upgraded my HOTAS throttle I can say that having a fancy, expensive controller genuinely makes a difference. Went from a TM TWCS throttle to the VPC MongoosT-50cm3 and P-51 engine management went from difficult to easy overnight. I still have my T.16000m stick but I imagine upgrading that will make a difference too. If you haven't, play around with axis curves. Doing so can make a big difference. That being said, I definitely agree that warbirds in DCS are a lot harder than other sims. Iain Christie here on YT has a great video called "DCS Warbird Survival Guide" which gets into some of the issues that make DCS warbirds so tricky, it's definitely worth checking out!

@@imageeknotanerd9897 I had a similar situation, in that the stick I was using is an old Saitek X-45. Put a lot of mileage on that stick, and it was getting worn out. I upgraded about 2 years ago with a TM Warthog and have really enjoyed it! Made it even better with an 8" extension installed on it. I used curves with my old stick, but don't use them at all with the extended Warthog. The range of movement and precision is far better with that setup. A big part of the warbirds is missing, and that's a fault of every PC flight sim, in that we can't really feel what the aircraft is doing. We can't feel it skid or slip through the air, buffeting when we pull too hard in a tight turn, or anything like that. Bass shakers can help, but it isn't quite the same. Thank you for the heads up on that video, I'll be sure and check it out!

I don't see why people think the P-51 was "an excellent fighter" since it has such a terrible propensity to wing stall easily. I would think a Spitfire Mk 22 or 24 would beat the crap out of a Mustang.
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 2 ай бұрын
It was good, but I agree, not the king of air combat. Yeah, that left wing likes to stall first, and she is good at letting you know you are pulling too hard on the stick! Spitfire IX will out turn the Mustang, but not out accelerate. Not sure about the later variants.

NO, you dont want to "dance" around a bombers!! Especially dont attack from their 6 and most of all... do NOT show the gunners belly of your aircraft as you did repeatedly.
