The stock Sea Fury had 2550 hp with the Bristol-Centaurus 18 engine. My friend the late Lloyd Hamilton owned N588, Race 16, Baby Gorilla. Racing the plane up at Reno Air Races. After the race event we'd fuel the plane then wipe down the airframe. That's it. All the other planes that raced in the Unlimited Divisions would have to have their engines looked over. Not the Bristol. The reason we don't see many stock Sea Furys with Bristol engines is because of a lack of available parts and people that can rebuild this sleeve valved engine.

Lloyd had an off airport landing in the desert near Tehachapi pass heading home after the Mojave race in 72? 73? in Race 16, Larry Rengsdorf was in the back seat. He also had an engine failure near Santa Rosa, ending up in a plum orchard. Both failures were Centaurus engines. I found Race 15 in Holland and Lloyd and I went and got a couple of months later. Sadly the engine had gone to a trade school and we never found it.

@@Warbirds Amazing how quickly planes developed in WW II. Fighters over 100 mph faster at the end of the war than during the Battle of Britain, bombers carrying 2-3 times the weight, faster, and longer ranges. And just missing the war you had (effectively) you had the Meteor, P-80, Shackleford and B-36 getting ready to go operational. Yes, I understand the Meteor was in use over UK, and the P-80 also made some flights, but these were not truly front line planes just yet. Kind of like the Luftwaffe's Comet, not quite ready for prime time yet.

Just magical video for me, thank you! Love both aircraft. My late dad flew the Fury FBII (as well as predecessor Tempest and various other types, plus Supermarine Attacker, 1st gen jet). Dad always said the Fury was the most perfect plane - flawless and a joy to fly. I love this video because he used to tell his wide-eyed son of the aerobatic qualities of his aircraft, the sound of the engine, etc. Now I can see and hear it properly, and experience a little of the exhilaration he felt, piloting this beauty. We had the Hawker Sea Fury in the Canadian Navy while I was stationed At Shearwater Naval Base in the time I was in 1954 to1964. I like the P-51 it a lot more publicity than the Fury. Which helped it be more noticeable but that Fury could sure haul ass. We had a few pilots that were young and adventurous and they really could make those birds put on a show. I had the great opportunity to do a run up of a Fury that was in a tie down so it wouldn't take off and thank God it didn't. That was a thrill I will never forget we had it actually dancing up and down on the tires. Oh to be young and a little crazy again.

Whoever was flying it is a heck of a pilot. Of course I lust over the P-51, but it was really fun to discover something new. The setting for these flights is magnificent. Hawker Fury was a development of the Hawker Tempest, which was developed from the Typhoon. Fury never saw service in WW2 but gave good service in Korea. It was adapted for naval use because early jets needed longer runways. Hence the Sea Fury.

@richarddahmer44747 күн бұрын
@@fredemny3304 Yes, your most correct, but we were all allies and fighting for the same thing. It was hard for the British to build airplanes being bombed almost every night! everyone helped to get things done. Like Rolles Roice giving Packard rights to produce Rolles Roice engines for their Spitfires and Mustangs and all the rest that desperately needed them. The Lend-Lease Program got Air Cobras to the Rusha, GM And others-built hundreds of Trucks and jeeps to give the Rushen's a way to move their troops and equipment to the battlefields. Yes, the Sea Fury was a British design, just like the Rolles Roice was a brilliant British design that went in the North American P-51 Mustang and their Spitfire and everything else that used and needed them! Just don't be too hard on him, he may not know how everything worked but he has to spirt and the love and can appreciate the Legassey they left behind. It will be up to younger generations to keep them flying! Thank you for helping him understand the "We" did not build or design everything in WWII, and I'm sure he will not forget it. It took everyone to stop that war! That's why they call it a World War. people from places we have never heard of, took part and did their part to preserve our way of life and all our freedoms. I see a lot of vintage planes and police helicopters messing around over and around my house in SE England, probably because all around are wide open fields where they can land if things go south. I also live not very far from Old Warden, home to the Shuttleworth Collection, who have frequent air displays. On one occasion (alas, no mobile phone cameras then), I recognised the breathy howl of a Merlin engine and dashed into my garden. There was a Spitfire Mk IX doing barrel rolls, bunts, split S, you name it, at full power. And then he did something I have never seen at an air show. He did a steep climb to about 30,000 feet and went into a full power dive, and pulled up almost at rooftop height, surely ticking off close to 500mph. The sound! I swear I could hear the supercharger sucking in air by the bucketload, and the angry yet defiant roar of the engine was intoxicating. I wish I could have recorded it. You never see it on air dhows, because it would probably breach health and safety guidelines, but I'd have it on KZfaq, totally without music, as is this video. She's not a Spitfire, but the Mustang was built to an RAF requirements spec for a long-range fighter escort, and she carries the beating heart of the Spitfire. The sound in the video is fantastic!

He was at an air show where they flew two beautiful examples of the high point of piston/prop driven airplane technology, and he shot some lovely video of them being put through their paces. Then idiots came clambering in, rooting for their “fave” and claiming he should have used different planes or different engines. I merely pointed out to said idiots that he didn’t have that option and then an even bigger idiot (you) clambers all over my comment with evident indignation (all those !!!) at the poster. He'd go down show center (right to left) then at the end of the runway pull up hard and bank right to go out over the lake with the Mustang following about a half runway length behind. The coolest part was the turbulence from the pull made the tip smoke swirl and then converge in a big ring which about as soon as it fully formed was center punched by the Mustang. Suddenly a Sea Fury showed out of nowhere with the engine Screaming at what seemed going twice as fast as the Mustang, making everyone stop dead on their tracks I had no idea those things were so powerful and so fast. I became an instant fan of Sea Furys. The show it out on made the Mustang look like child's play. In fortunately they came into service as WWII ended.

I did love the P51 ofcourse but did not know the Sea Fury that well, but i love that Fury and the sound she makes, that whistling at high speeds so magnificent. Thank you for posting this! I wish the Hawker hadn't used the smoke machines on its wingtips not that it has anything to do with your great video. One thing that always comes to mind when I watch these restored machines is that I assume the pilots are restraining themselves a bit and quite obviously understandably so, but I wonder what it would look like if we could see videos of this quality from when they were in actual combat and scratching out everything the plane could muster?
@windwardpro5 жыл бұрын
I love how clear the video quality is. However, are you using a tripod? Because like several videos I've seen using tripods, the camera jerks forward when trying to follow faster motion instead of smoothly following.

Hi I’m not using a tripod. The camera messes up stabilization on strong zooming and fast movements. This season I will try the walimex pro shoulder pod

Roger Dodger these were built only 40 years after first powered flight... less than 20 since Sopwith and Fokker aircraft fought over France. A pretty amazing surge in technology. At that pace it is not surprising modern fighters have evolved into high tech wonders, but interestingly they don’t fly any faster than they did 50 years ago. I guess you have to understand and appreciate engineering and history to comprehend my comment.

You're welcome, :) Because my father machined Merlin engine parts at one of the RR factories during the war. A few years after the war he moved to North America and worked in aircraft factories. Here he had to "cool it" with the tolerances he was after on lathes and mills because RR set higher standards than what was normal elsewhere. It had become automatic practice for him so he had to unlearn some things. I've still got a few of his small hand tools with his name engraved on them. I should donate them to an aviation museum soon.

@@timothyphillips5043 yeah, the role it played. The USAAF was conducting day time unescorted bombing missions into Germany. Unlike the Brits, they didn't hide under cover of darkness and were taking heavy losses. It got so bad that they called off the long range missions until an effective escort could be found. That's when the mustang came on the scene and enabled the US military to resume the deep bombing missions and hasten the end of the war. It was so effective at crippling the Luftwaffe that the English even started conducting daytime missions. So yeah, the role it played.

@@hugmal37 so what? U could put that same engine in another plane and it wouldn't have performed as well as the mustang. Of course you have to match the right power plant with the airframe, that's just common sense. What's the sea fury without that 2000hp Pratt Whitney engine? What's your point?

@@barrierodliffe4155 wow, Barrie Low-life displays ungrateful passive-aggressive publicly; such a lack of gratitude for the 80,000 men that paid their lives flying bombers over Europe. The P-51 single-handed ended the bombing campaign over Europe by providing air supremacy to the bombing runs and their safe return. Without the Merlin engine, the P-51 was incomplete; without the American airframe the Merlin was a solution looking for a platform. Wonderful example of both Americans and Brits working together ti #win. God Bless all that paid the ultimate price!

@@MechanicalTrader Gratitude for USA profiteering and doing a fraction of the job the RAF did in Europe. The P 51 did nothing single-handed and even after Britain gave USA the best aero engine the P 51 was not close to a Spitfire in performance, it was the Spitfiire that achieved air supremacy in Europe. Without the Merlin the P 51 was rather useless, with the Merlin it was good but not close to a Spitfire except for range because of the Merlin and British drop tanks.

Another great pity is that the CAC CA-15, also known unofficially as the CAC Kangaroo, which was a project developed TOO late in Australia itself (for WW11) and which ended up being cancelled due to the growing potential of jet engines in that period- never achieved production. This machine, being Australian, both sported the Kangaroo insignia and was named "Kangaroo" while, in appearance, seemed to suggest what a Mustang on steroids might look like. Year: 1946 Status: Cancelled POWER: 1 x Rolls-Royce Griffon 61 12-cylinder inline liquid-cooled engine developing 2,035 horsepower. Speed (Max): 447 mph Climb Rate: 4,900 ft/min Proposed Armament: 6 x 0.50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine guns in wings PROPOSED OPTIONAL: 10 x High-explosive rockets (five per wing) or 2 x 1,000lb conventional drop bombs (one per wing)
