Péage Tag in bike pocket? Does an Emovis Tag work riding across France on a motorcycle?

There must be a more efficient way to ride through those pesky Peage barriers other than digging out a card or bank notes? As a biker, I like to avoid long straight sections of multi-lane roads but sometimes there are needed for making up precious time in a long journey.
We review our experience of buying and using an Emovis Tag when riding across Northern France from Calais to the Black Forest.
We purchased our tags from www.emovis-tag.co.uk - service was excellent but is the tag ultimately worth the hassle, deposit and annual fees?

I put mine in a small plastic bag and stick it to my screen with duck tape, keep riding up to the barrier works every time 😊👍

Nice entertaining vid. If you are taking a ticket riding a bike, just remember to keep that ticket dry if it's raining. On my first time visit, I put the ticket in my top pocket. Turned to mush by the time I got to the insert and pay point. Guess that's a good reason for a tag? Recently we took our two naked bikes in my van, Caen to Bourg St Maurice. Worked well on the toll roads paying as we went. Cost all in one way £100! Not cheap but we easily crossed France in a day.

I have used Emovis tags in France and Spain in a car and it worked flawlessly, I preferred the 30 KPH lanes it just beeps you through. Side note they also work in Spanish carparks that have ticket entry. If we take our bikes down may not bother with the tags I know the battery levels are low now. Good information in the video

Thank you. We recently travelled through tolls again with a large group and once again, it was far less hassle to whip out a contactless card. Would certainly see the benefit as a single car or bike though

@ 6:40, it seems to me that you should have used the lane on your right side with the "t" for your tag to work. In California we have lanes dedicated to Fastrak tags on our freeways.

We tried all sorts over the 400 miles across the top of France and only a fraction got on here. Each time we went for the ‘t’ tag lane. Missed results. I think our problems were a mix of riding too close to the vehicle in front of each other, speed of approach and location of the tag on the rider/bike. We drew some comfort from seeing lots of cars having similar issues so perhaps it was a bad day for tags. I’m tempted to run the test again on a solo ride when I head across France to Ukriane in the summer rather than on a group ride. Are they fault-free in Cali?

I do know what you mean re the signs above. I can’t recall the exact reason I picked that lane but I’m pretty sure the sign was alternating between arrow and ‘t’

@@TangoPasty I reviewed the video between timelines 6:26 and 6:31 and you entered the wrong lane for your tag. You never had a t-sign but a green arrow on your lane's portal. However, at 11:04 you were right on the money, so to speak! I googled the meaning of the t-letter on french autoroutes. Here's the translation: What is the t at the toll? Electronic toll collection allows regular motorway users to save time, especially in summer. Lane reserved for users who have subscribed to the subscription system which allows tolls to be crossed without stopping by automatic detection of a badge thanks to sensors placed upstream (maximum speed 30 km/h). @@TangoPasty To answer your question about the Fastrak toll system in California, it is very reliable. It works at any speed, no need to slow down. To be clear, most our freeways (motorways) are free to use. However in large metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles, we have more and more express lanes and a couple of freeways with toll. On my 1250 GS-A I have a decal Fastrak tag affixed at the bottom of the wind-screen.

In a busy peage, always hang back until the vehicle in front is clear, only had one issue when I was charged as a car, appealed no problem.

I use a tag and hardly have any issues? The odd time the barrier didn't go up was when impatient car drivers are right up on your back wheel and the sensor and the weight plate under the road get confused and it takes a bit of time but mainly i trundle up very slowly and rarely have to put my feet down. The website allows you to check your tolls and the very odd time i was charged a car rate, it was sorted out quickly via an email. I haven't tried the tag in my pocket though, I generally have it in my bar bag in the lid, it does need to be the right way round for it to work. Good video though, pro's and cons to both ways of doing it.

At 4:06 you’re riding along at a good clip with no glasses on or visor down….BAD idea! If you’ve never had a stone chip or wasp in the eyeball, it’s only a matter of time…you should never ride without eye protection in place unless you’re doing 5mph around town! Useful advice on the tag though…cheers, I’ll leave it out!

I had similar problems with my Emovis tag in May on my this year. No problems at all with my car, just the bike. The problem I had was the barrier was finding my tag on arrival but not on exit, so no ticket and it was impossible to communicate at the barrier. The first two times I was let through after speaking at the barrier, and later found I’d been charged via emovis, the third time I was forced to pay a higher amount at the barrier to get out. Emovis were very unhelpful when I spoke to them after my trip, despite pointing out that they clearly must have record of my entry at each barrier because the tag let me in. Avoid Emovis tags for bikes I’d say.

All wrong! From my experiences in a car, ALWAYS use a lane with the T on the display, especially if you're following a Brit or it's almost guaranteed that you'll end up waiting for then. For a bike you're told to use the non-height restricted lane on the right otherwise you'll be charged the same as a car (bikes are supposed to be cheaper) and stay in the centre of the lane. I haven't tried it myself on a bike yet but plan to in the next few months.

Let me how you find it on a motorcycle - I think you may find it's not as straight forward as you think. Good luck. (most of the time you get charged as a motorcycle regardless of how you approach in your lane) It isn't foolproof by any means and I have had different experiences in differing densities of traffic. @@TangoPastyI owe you a reply, I’m currently in Germany checking my toll account for last week. I rode through the HGV lanes all the way from Calais to Geneva with the tag in an upper jacket pocket. Apart from having to stop once and puff my chest out when the barrier didn’t come up I can’t say I have any issues and my account shows vehicle class 5 (as opposed to 1 for my car) for each one so I can safely say that it can and does work. I had a GoPro on the bike and may post a short video compilation when I get home if you’re interested in seeing.

@@virtualllama I am interested for sure, in fact I’m going to try again this July! I’ll do likewise and have the tag ready! HGV lanes it is, though I’m on a Harley this time so I may actually get charged as an articulated lorry! Got a nifty pocket in the upper arm I’m tempted to try.
