I have always felt that Tchaikovsky - intentionally or unintentionally - had a melancholy component running through just about all of his music. His life experiences seemed to dictate that such be the case. These variations on a Rococo Theme are no exception. I thought the cellist performed quite well and interpreted the music probably very much as Tchaikovsky wanted it to be interpreted. It does seem like the composer finally became weary of the melancholy in this work and decided to put the performer's technical expertise to the test in the finale. The musical contrast in the work from front to back was rather remarkable. Thought that the fingering and bowing of Narek Hakhnazaryan quite up to the challenge. He did good.
