Had some problems with my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8 stalling intermittently, and difficulty starting. Used a LELink OBD reader to pull codes, and found P0320 (with P0725 and P1281 pending). Research indicated crankshaft sensor and/or camshaft sensor could be a problem, so removed starter, O2 sensor, battery tray, and replaced those. Also swapped out Idle Air Control since I remember that helping in the past. All codes cleared after the repair, road tested well. Note the parts I ordered were: (1) Mopar 56028666AB Crankshaft Position Sensor, (2) Mopar 56041584AF Camshaft Position Sensor (both looked quite different than what I found inside), (3) Delphi CV10153 Idle Air Control Valve. Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic, just trying to DIY a problem.

UPDATE: I replaced the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor and the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which were both easily accessible, and it runs even more smoothly. Wanted to replace the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor but I can't easily access one of the screws, so may try that some time. Bottom line: If you've got an old Jeep, replace all the sensors after you've had it about 15 years and it's bound to improve the engine performance.

To get trouble codes with 99 - 04 Jeep Grande Cherokee you just need to turn the ignition key to the on position 3 times in quick succession and trouble codes if any will apear where your mileage is.

Thank you for the helpful video. This was the only info for cam and crank sensor replacement for my 2000 WJ 4.7 that was spot on with locations and access. One MUST drop the starter to access the crank sensor which is directly above it and a bear to wiggle out. The cam sensor is easy once the battery tray is out. Again if working with a 4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee Limited this is your ticket for cam and crank sensors. Thank you.

That's exactly what my name year and model jeep does. It revs itself and sometimes stalls. When I first started working on it it wouldn't start, we replaced the starter and it would try but wouldn't continue idling then we replaced the crankshaft and camshaft sensor. That made it actually run but it would rev. Were in the process right now of replacing the IAC. It still needs to complete the relearn but I'm praying it fixes it cause this jeep has been down for about a year and a half now. Also very informative video, most people dont even show the problem in action which is extremely helpful when diagnosing things on vehicles.

Before that I put a new crankshaft sensor but didn’t resolve the problem super annoying problem was finally SOLVED!!

Top starter bolt - use a 2ft extension and a whobble bit. BTW, you have a light out on the dash. I'm only 225K miles. So congrats to you. Mine is to haul around small trailers and my 3 dogs... :) Absolutely love the combination of performance (at least 0-50) and bad weather traction. Its an animal in the rain. Not loving the gas milage - average 17 around town and 21 on extended highway trips.

I have the 2000 GC (european) with P0340 and P1391 codes but no idle or cruising issues, the engine light comes and goes randomly. I'm not sure that replacing the crankshaft and camshaft sensors is the way, any advise? many thanks.

Can't get the crankshaft sensor out! Update! I got it out! I used some 9" long nose locking pliers to clamp on to it and then used a medium sized crowbar wedged against it and a lot of tapping on it with a hammer. It was tedious and took a long time but that sucker finally came free.

I chickened out replacing mine. Was replacing starter and figured I’d do it, but couldn’t get the old one out!! Got it to spin, but not out. My mechanic buddy helping me said to leave it alone. Said the “socket” where it is is probably rusty and we were worried about breaking it or the new one not seating properly. What do you think? Should I have pried it out with a screwdriver and pliers? Thanks

If you know it needs replacing then yes pry it out. Try to get a screwdriver under the mounting tab and pry that out. Or clamp the sensor with vise grips and then use a pry bar on those as another commenter had said.

Hi Jim. Thanks for the video. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that randomly stalls out on me. After I let it sit for awhile it will restart. No codes are thrown. Interesting thing is that when it stalls the dash gauges stop working. I still have lights, radio and the engine will turn over. Did your dash gauges stop working as well when you stalled?
@JimBeno
@JimBeno 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl, I'm not sure, I think the gauges were still functioning when it stalled. RPMs would've been 0, but I don't think all the other gauges were flatlined. Sounds like it could be an electrical issue. Maybe disconnect and clean the battery terminals, check the fuses, or look for some dash-specific posts like this: www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/instrument-cluster-no-working-gauges-85883/

I am working on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same issue, it stalls, engine cranks and won't start. Gauges go down to zero, fuel gauge drops below empty even though there is over half a tank in it. Nothing is talking on the communication pci bus. Cycle the key off then back on then everything works and the jeep starts and runs fine until it stalls again.

@shessolovely 6 жыл бұрын
Carl Stuart so here’s what I found out, the security system in the Jeep immobilizes the entire vehicle so sometimes the steering wheel locks and or your car stalls, it’s the camshaft sensor for sure cause I had to get mine switched cause whenever I brought it to more and more mechanics they couldn’t figure it out until I went deep searching on it.

Clean the opening in the block and lubricate the rubber o-ring on the crank sensor with a little oil or grease... make sure you press it in straight... it's a tight fit, but it needs to be so that oil doesn't leak out.

@JimBeno 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what size it was, I just found a washer I had lying around. It worked well as far as I can tell. I would have been uncomfortable trying to tighten it up further and risk stripping the threads. There was a clear difference in the thickness of the tab. So the wash just served as filler material to close the gap.
