Easy to follow steps to fix the P0401 code on your 2001 F150 4.6
Includes removal and cleaning of intake plenum.

Very well done. Thanks. The only add I would have is I used my pressure washer to blast out all of the buildup after wrestling with chemicals and picks and brushes. The pressure washer got all of the surfaces completely clean in seconds. I did not use the pressure washer on the throttle body. Just the throttle body cast manifold. Work like a charm. Good video. Very well done.

I wanted to send you a huge thank you! I threw lots of money at all of the peripheral parts and sprays etc. Did nothing. I waited until the day before I had to get a CA STAR smog check. Both EGR ports were completely caked solid. I was able to get it cleaned up, w/ new gaskets & back together in a couple of hours. Passed smog with flying colors. 2001 Ford F-150 4.6, 296K miles. Thanks again!

Thanks, worked like a charm! I have a 2000 F-150 4.6L with 135k miles and this worked perfectly for me tonight. I also had a bad egr solenoid but was able to diagnose that by no noise/movement with 12v applied. This took me about 2.5 hours for the whole process and I work on computers for a living. Thanks man you saved me about 1k at the shop. I used Torque on my phone with a similar cheap Bluetooth obd2 adapter to read my codes.

@@ipman4715 make sure the gas cap is on securely and that it’s in good condition. Sometime it can fix on its own after driving for a while. Not sure what else might cause that error.

Very helpful. I was getting p0401 as well as other codes on my 2002 f150. I performed the work you outlined and my throttle body looked identical to yours in this video. Berryman b12 did the job and put it all back together with new gaskets. No more rough idling and all codes are gone. I did need to purchase the 1 1/16 wrench to disconnect the exhaust tube from the EGR. Thanks again!!

You can buy an adjustable wrench to get that nut off. Once broken loose it comes off by hand.

I’ve done pretty much just about everything and still have the code. New EGR New EGR tube NEW EGR Vacuum solenoid valve New EGR DPFE sensor (aftermarket) gonna try an OEM one since a lot of people have issue with aftermarket ones) -checked for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine and no luck -also cleaned out the throttle body, ports etc..

Doing it this coming weekend. Recently started working on my old 02 Expy to make it reliable again. P0401 just recently came up and i took the EGR to clean it out but I’m not sure if it’s good; holds vacuum but the pintle doesn’t seem to open all the way, not sure if it’s supposed to and haven’t found any videos on it. While I wait for a new EGR to come in the mail, I’m going to do the cleaning! 👌🏻

@@Foxedupno worries, thanks for the replies thought! A quick Google search (don’t know why I didn’t think of that first) showed it was the EGR gasket, which I had already ordered and being delivered today. Here’s to being able to do it as easy as it looks on your video!😅

Clean TB, replaced DFPE sensor, still PO401, replaced EGR Sensor Regulator & EVAP Purge Hose , ( hose runs from top of TB from to brake booster ) issue resolved

You're not suppose to use carb cleaner on the Ford throttle bodies. There is a yellow sticker on it that says as much. The reason is they have a Teflon coating that gets eaten off. If you have to clean it you have to use something very mild - Seafoam, for instance. South Main Auto has a video on it here on YT.

Did you take off the battery cables when doing the throttle? When you took off the air assembly housing did you spray the Mass Air Flow Sensor to make sure there wasn't any dust on those wires since they are sensitive to make sure they were free of dust? Asking because I'm going to have to do this with the throttle and I'm wondering if I need to take off the battery cables or spray the mass air flow sensor just to be sure no dust is on those wires.

Great video! What’s the trick to getting the egr tube nut freed from the egr valve? I’ve been working at it for hours. Tried PB blaster and a torch to no avail

Could a bad camshaft position sensor cause p0401 even after replacing Egr, only time code come on is when it’s driving rough and I’m driving it for a little bit with it running rough

Possibly, but it would probably would have been getting progressively worse leading up to the stalling. Is that the only code you’re getting?

@@Foxedup yessir i had the code for a couple weeks, and it was still running strong other than rough idle, let it sit for a week during the cold temps, and now it just dies if I don’t give it throttle

I have a 2002 f150 with 45k miles that code came on do you think it's carbon build up or the EGR ? P.s. the truck was my grandma's and really never drove it much

Probably carbon build up. But it can build up in the EGR, as well. It would be worth pulling off and inspecting.

It all just blows out through the exhaust instead of a portion flowing through the EGR

Hello I had the same codes so I cleaned my throttle body, changed the EGR valve, selenoid and DDP sensor. The light was off for 2 days and came right back on. I sprayed around all areas to see if I had a vacuum leak. There was not any. Any suggestions? It will greatly be appreciated.

There several other things that could cause that. 1) The EGR valve itself is bad and isn’t opening and closing properly. Those are around $40 to $50 on Amazon. 2) Or the DPFE sensor is bad. Those are only around $15 on Amazon. Keep. In the vacuum line are sucking in a small amount of air, so spraying around them may not indicate a leak. Many shops use a smoke test and inject smoke into the vacuum system (with the car off) and look for smoke coming out of the system.

@@Foxedup Thank u so much for your insight. I've decided to start from scratch. I took the intake apart and found more junk in the ports so I cleaned the whole unit and EGR valve. Put all back together and received a code for the DPFE sensor this time so I changed it again and the light went away. Thx again!
