P0457? Fixing Your Subaru Purge Valve? There's a Surprise You Don't Know!

In this video, we'll show you how to fix your Subaru purge valve! If you're experiencing any of the following problems, chances are you have a purge valve issue: your car is slow to fill up, p0457 check engine light, slow fuel fill, fuel clicks off, or the charcoal canister doesn't work.
Fixing your purge valve is usually a quick and easy fix, and this video will show you how to do it. If you're having problems with your Subaru, be sure to watch this video and find out how to fix the purge valve and be able to fill it up with gas again!

Currently working on this same issue with my 2013 STI Hatch. The purge valve is much smaller and hidden above the rear driver's side cv joint. Was very tricky to get to. At least the charcoal canister is in the hatch area.

I have a Evap code for gas cap, and misfire cylinder 1 hopefully I can use your videos to help fix them.

The gas cap could absolutely be this issue and for the cylinder 1, it could be the spark plugs, plug wires or coil pack. It could also be the head gasket but that would have other issues like burning coolant!

Yes no head gasket issues. Just rough idle and misfire. I bought it and it has a Cheapo gas cap. I replaced plug and coil still have the issue. Doing gas cap next

Did you check the plug wires? We had a customer with the issue and it turned out to be the wires

I noticed my '07 Forester is having some trouble starting after I fill it up with gas? It seems to fill up normally, but when I go to start the engine after it sputters and I have to keep the key turned for a few seconds before the engine will stay on. I've had a P0442 code for awhile but I don't know if this would be my purge valve causing the problem or something else. UPDATE 12/29/23 Replaced the canister purge valve under the hood of the car and I am no longer having problems with starting the car after getting gas! I tried to replace the vent valve in the back like in the video, however my bolts were incredibly rusted and I stripped two of them. So I couldn't get the canister down and never actually got to replace the vent valve. I'm holding on to the part in case something happens and I need to replace it, but for now the car is running great! As for the emissions code, I've driven 150 miles since detaching and reattaching the battery, and still no code. However, I also have not let the gas below half a tank since I know the car runs an emissions test at a quarter of a tank. I have a feeling my filler neck is rusted and is the actual problem, but for now, I was able to get it to pass the emissions test which is all I wanted.

Hmm that could be a few things, that code is about a evap system leak. If you are over filling it could plug up the system, it not it could be any number of evap connections between engine and the gas tank.

Same problem on my 02 wrx. Any time I fill up/ add any amount of gas into the tank it idles rough for a minute or so before it evens out again. Curious as to what you find

@@kevinvillarreal4138 Ah yeah, evap is a pain to troubleshoot shoot! My guess is something to do with the line running to the engine, could be plugged or one of the vents not opening

My 2004 STi had the same one and this guide says its there: cars.natemichals.com/wrx-vapor-canister-purge-valve-replacement-write-up/ Maybe it was deleted on your car? Or is it a JDM car, they might of had a different system. I'm not quite sure though.

I have an 04 forester, I found the valve which is the same as yours but all the auto parts stores seem to have a differnt model than that one I can’t find it either.(update) it’s called a vent valve on most sites not a purge valve. The name makes all the difference

@@loganrogers969My Wrx has the charcoal canister underneath the passenger rear wheel but thier is no Purge Valve. Not sure why . ? Unless it’s somewhere else

Those are both very different from this emissions problem. One is ETG and the other is a solenoid. There could be a million different things wrong with that combination, if you are looking at getting it fixed I would take to a reputable shop in your area. Sorry I can't be more help!

Yup, that's the type of part, hence why the community uses both the terms interchangeably. I am sure I have called it both before

@@Chase_Schrader yes, not a big deal at all. Both parts do the same job, but to differentiate between the two they were given different names. Generally speaking, the one in the engine bay is a purge solenoid, and the one near the tank a vent solenoid. Whatever who cares

If you have charcoal loose in the hoses you need a new canister. The purge is going to go bad again.
