In this installment I address a common problem on these 2nd generation Toyota Prius’. When it sets this code it’s the inverter coolant pump 99% of the time.

In your case, did the pump fail or was it still moving coolant? My is pumping coolant but I got a P0A93.

This is a very helpful video! We are currently on a road trip landed in Colorado. All our lights popped on while we were driving, so we plugged in our code reader and it threw this exact code. We are wanted to buy the part and replace it ourselves since we have had similar experience replacing the three way coolant valve. Since we are not home and on a road trip we are going to need to buy the tools to replace to part. Do you have a list of all the tools and tool sizes you used to replace this part? It would be extremely helpful!

Glad it helps. Off the top of my head, if you plan to minimize the coolant spillage, you'll need a way to pinch the hoses (vice grips maybe), just don't squeeze them too hard. You'll need 12mm and 10mm sockets, a wobbly extension as well as some extensions to get to the inverter bolt in the back. May need a flat head screw driver to remove the plastic clips for the plastic cover over the radiator. That should be it I think.

I just had this code popped up. Would this make my AC stop blowing cold as will? That’s what happened in my case. While driving, the code popped up and compressor seemed to stopped. Fan is still blowing air but no ac.

If it’s overheating, I guess it could be possibly. I haven’t seen that though. Usually this code can lead to a blown AM2 fuse which renders the car inoperable.

Yep that's what happened to me first my AC stopped blowing cold then the Red Death triangle popped up but I'm still able to drive it 15 Mi to get home and it still starts up

@Swissk31300BO yeah but the weird thing is when I open the cap to look at the coolant there was some turbulence like the pump was working.. so I took it to a mechanic shop and they weren't getting the triangle death because I cleared the codes so they did not fix it and then the same thing happened again I ended up taking it to the Toyota dealership and paying $800 for them to put in a new pump and now it works great I was going to try and do it myself but I don't have a garage anymore it's way too hot out here in Arizona

Hi guys . I have kinds same problem. At highway red triangle pop up. And A/C not working properly. Blowing but not too cold. Then diagnose it PA093 overheat problem . I add some water(1 lt) from radiator cap.And delete error.Wait 20 min.Ac started working and no error. Should I have change inverter if it pop up again ? Or could be another electrical provlem

You can get cheap aftermarket inverter pumps for as little as $30 but they don't last... I bought an Asian pump off Amazon for a total of $103.13 it is OEM. Good luck 🍀

anyone saying this video is helpful needs to go to another video and ill explain why. DO NOT MANIPULATE THAT INVERTER IN ANY WAY UNTILL YOU PULL THE BATTERY PLUG DESIGNED TO STOP ELECTRICITY FROM GOING TO IT JUST IN CASE A 16 YEAR OLD WIRE IS FREYED OR CRACKABLE IT HAPPENS. Besides the absolutely obvious safety issue all you need to do to get that inverter pump out is remove 3 bolts holding the headlight in and it gives you access to the entire cavity... I will say if anything is to be taken from this video its that you should clamp the hoses BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE NOT WEATHERED BECAUSE THEY WILL CRACK depending on the style clamp etc just be careful is all im saying

Yes, be careful, you should always be careful when working on cars, especially hybrids. That said, you are incorrect because if the car is turned off, electricity will never make it's way up to the inverter. The high voltage relays only turn on when the vehicle is in Ready mode. Voltage stays contained in the high voltage battery. This method also does not put any kind of strain on the wires. In order to get the headlight out of the way, you have to undo the bumper in that corner, which is definitely another feasible way of doing this job. For what it's worth, I have done dozens of these pumps over my career and never had a problem.

@@SkillCollectors maybe, but it is demonstrating this to people who could have a thousand different problems on top of the inverter pump like for instance maybe a front end collision is what killed it. In that case the high voltage system may be damaged and could short if manipulated or moved. It is always better to be safe than sorry when dealing with people that has NOT done dozens of these jobs 🙂

@@roshanbaba1. make sure you purge the system of air as you are hooking the lines up. Basically what I did because an air bubble was trapped in the intake coming from the resevoir I had to thumb it and fill the line up while it was off, also poor a little into the actual pumps top port, after its all filled with coolant quickly push the line back onto the inverter pump. fill the resevoir up, at this point the liquid should be inside the pump but not coming out because its not on. now you can either bleed from here and hope for the best or you can attempt to poor a little coolant into the out port hose as well before securing it. Next put the car into rdy by pushing the button twice without brakes. You should see the coolant moving inside the resevoir, if you dont then while the car is on attempt to manipulate the hoses or you can also to the out port hose off and let it run for just a second and shuv it back on. Next just bleed coolant like normal as shown in video. If the coolant still isnt cycling then you either have a bad pump, air inside the system still that needs purged, or a blocked hose somewhere, really the only options. Also please make sure to clear codes using an obd2 tool after replacement as this code usually will not go away on its own after replacement, and in fact in some models may not work properly until cleared.

I had the same code. The mechanic shop changed the hybrid inverter coolant pump, changed the coolant and all but still giving that code. Every now and then the triangle comes on and the car goes into neutral. I have to clear the code with the obd scanner…

You do not have to move the inverter at all, and you do not have to remove the headlight. It can be easily enough done without doing either of those 2 things. Just did it, ...took about 30 minutes.
