PA Plow Day 2018 - Highlights from the "John Deere Squad"

Here is Part 1 of the long-anticipated PA Plow Day 2018 video series! I decided to change things up a little bit this year instead of having 4 lengthy parts like I did last year. The next part will follow shortly.
DISCLAIMER: there is NO PLOWING shown in this video, just clips of various things going on during the two days at the event. GoPro plowing footage will be shown in the next video. I made the mistake of taking too many pictures and not enough video clips to go along with the pictures, so I added a few voiceovers to the video to make things interesting. The voiceovers explain most of the important events that occurred within our "John Deere Squad" at the 13th Annual PA Plow Day.
It was another successful year and I had a great time at the plow day! Got to meet several new faces, reunite with some good friends, run a few different garden tractors aside from my own, and most importantly, got to help out a farmer. I want to extend a special thanks to Josh Snyder, family, and friends who made the event possible. Here are some of the fellow KZfaqr's (all friends of mine) who you will see in this video.

Great video. I sure like plowin. I am wondering why most plowers don’t use the coulter. Most garden tractor plowing I watch is the same way. You don’t see the antique tractor guys doing that with their plows. Just wondering.

Yeah I was trying to come up with a name for our group, the Sears guys have their own cult so I think we should too. And yeah Jimmy definitely had the most LED's out of the group. lol

Nice video... I've been watching these plow day videos and would love to attend one. I live in upstate New York and can't find any around here. I've got a John deere 430 with a 12 inch 3 point plow. I would love to take a trip down to PA to do this. Can anyone do this or do you need to be part of a club. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone is welcome. We had people come from as far as Minnesota, Ontario, and Alberta this year. You just have to pay a $10 registration fee and sign a waiver for insurance purposes.

This make me want to participate...how would an X530 hold up doing something like this? I don't have plows etc. but it looks like a ton of fun!!

A friend of mine ran a 345 last year, which is basically just the older version of the X530. It plowed just as good as the rest of the tractors there. If you have ag tires, weights, and a sleeve hitch, come join the fun. Someone at the event might have a plow for you to try out or buy.

Thanks. We are usually instructed not to plow the headlands because there are so many tractors moving around the edges of the field...we need to allow room for them to pass through, and still have enough room for other tractors to turn around at the end of the furrow.

Hey you think I could make it through those fields with a gt225 with 50pound weights and chains I only have turf tires it a 15hp Koehler 2 wheel automatic no diff lock

One of my friends plowed with a 345 last year which has the same rear end as a GT225. With ag tires and cast iron wheel weights you should be able to plow just fine. Turf tires and chains won't cut it unless you are really lucky.

How did you put that diamond plate on the floorboards?

Just traced the pattern on a piece of paper and made a rough cutout on some cheap hardware store diamond plate, then drilled and pop-riveted it in place. But it looks terrible and is starting to rust out underneath because water collects under the plate.

That was one of the best looking convoys I have ever seen the Cubs and the Deere's going up the road. How many acres did you all plow all together look like quite a few acres there for just a day and a half or so. Did you ever get the 111 tractor fixed I ain't seen anything new yet? And another great video Sir I look forward to seeing video plowing for this year

We had plowed 129 total acres when it was all said and done. As for the 111, I parted it out and scrapped what was left. Most of the tractor was too far gone. That was 5 years ago.

It's a small sports camera. At plow day I switch back and forth between mounting it on my hat, and on fender of the tractor so I can use both hands to drive.

Some folks camp out there during the week leading up to the plow day, so they bring a camper, but you don't have to have one. Most people stay at a local hotel or sleep in their truck cab or enclosed trailer.

To be determined. The committee that hosted it for years finally hung it up last year and the new people in charge are currently trying to find a location and a date for the next one - we aren't sure if it will even happen yet.

Yeah there were a few of them. Someone also had a 445 there. They are tough plowing tractors.

They are also pretty comfortable to drive as well so you can sit and plow all day lol

That's for sure. I've run a 445 in the past, only thing I don't like about them is the hydraulic spools under the steering wheel.

MichaelTJD60 personally I like that a lot you can lift up the plow or deck and still have both hands on the steering wheel. It's nice to have a tractor that you don't need 4 hands to operate lol

That is true. Trying to plow snow with a hand-hydro tractor takes a bit of skill.

Yeah I let Blake run it on Saturday since he didn't bring a tractor. A couple friends hooked us up with an extra sleeve hitch and Brinly plow for him to use.

Yeah, you don't have to have a diesel to do it. Just need the right tires and plenty of weight. None of my tractors are diesel.

It's a get-together for garden tractor hobbyists where we plow a bunch of fields to help a farmer out. It's become a big social event...swap meet, campout, tractor display, etc.

You mentioned that you had to keep topping off the tank because of gravity feed. Thought about putting another outlet on the other side,ran together or single. Watching your vids has made me want a 200 or 300 series John Deere. They are not cheap.

I had plans to build an auxiliary fuel tank with a selector valve to switch between both fuel tanks, but it never happened. I was searching for a 300-316K with the larger fuel tank, but this 140 H3 was basically handed to me for free, so I couldn't refuse. The market for old garden tractors is currently at a low, so if you can find them for sale, now is the time to buy.

Is it because the frame or the transmission?

Transmission. The frame is shared with the GT series (GT242, GT262, GT275, etc), which are considered pretty heavy garden tractors. So you shouldn't have to worry about the frame. But the Peerless 801 trans in that LX173 wasn't designed for pulling heavy loads, especially ground-engaging attachments.

Okay so If you put a stronger transmission and maybe add some weight it could be a homemade garden tractor?

In theory, yeah. The most direct fit would be a K70 transaxle from a GT275. But I don't know if different mounts would have to be used. I'm sure the drive belt would also have to be changed. At that point a GT225 would be the most similar model...Kohler Command engine and a K70/K71 trans. For what it's worth, you'd be better off just buying another tractor for plowing.
