Paccar Fuel Filter Change!!

A quick rundown of the PACCAR engine fuel filter change. Including the chassis side (water separator) filter. You'll see the filter change process for pre 2021 model year engines! (Do not use the EPA 21 procedure it is incorrect. )

For the model year 2021 onwards, when you relpace the filter element you're not supposed to screw it into the cap and then try to find the hole with the pin on the bottom end plate. If you have the correct filter element (difference between them is in the angle on the sword inside the filter element and the pin on the bottom) when you place it on the plastic pipe in the middle the filter element will slide into the correct position. For the pre-filter element, if you got the wrong one, the cover will not reach the thread and you know you got a wrong one. For the main filter, you will be able to install the cover even if you have a wrong filter element inside but the pin on the filter element will not be aligned with the filter element thus making the filter impossible to pressurize. Also when removing the caps, please let 2 minutes for draining else you might get crosscontamination from clean to dirty side when removing the filter element if its still sorrounded by diesel. All this is mentioned in the service instruction (but with less details)

Please do if possible. This is by far the best method I've come across. I considered buying another return line just to cut the fitting off, but the Kenworth guys want $241 dollars. Lol

@@mgamez0821 That's the way we did it actually... but I think the parts guys should be able to get you the fitting alone now as this is the recommended process. (sorry for the late response!)

Following the described procedure on the 2021 and later portion of this video WILL cause cross-contamination of the fuel system AND probably cause damage to the injectors. When removing the filter caps you must loosen them until the o-ring is fully visible on both filter caps, then wait two minutes for the fuel filter module to drain completely, then finish removing the caps.

@Dartmech buddy you are 100 percent wrong, read the instructions that come with the filter and the paccar manual. The filter is made to click into the cap, no where in any manual does it say drop it in the housing and spin it.

Do you think it would also work if i hooked up to the priming port. We have been using a priming can but i now think that that may be causing injector issues. So i want to try this vacuum method but i think hooking up to that port would just make it a bit smoother process.

If you’re talking about the bleeder on the return line it would probably suck fuel from whichever side (tank/engine) that has least resistance for it. You might end up pulling from the tank and not priming the engine.

Any way to drain down the filter housings without the vacuum pump?

The old way was you just crack the lids and what a few minutes. That doesn’t always get all the fuel out though so they suggest the vacuum method.

2 tanks or one? Check water separator for restriction/line routing. Check to make sure the fuel lines are seated all the way on the engine. Check that white check ball in the filter housing I show in the video.

Been had terrible luck with our Fuel systems on these 23 rigs. F those check balls and also thanks for the tips on Might Vac. I think that the issue we had been causing injectors to clog after first change out in some of the company shops. Apparently Paccar is redesigning the injectors already so waiting on those to come out. For now they keep cleaning and replacing with old design injectors as fail. Nice that warranty covers but WTF cause I have ran this truck up to 40k miles in 3 months and been at dealer 2 of those months. SMH.

That's pretty bad.. Are these 2023 trucks? Just wondering as the EPA21 engines have a different mechanism for restricting flow without a filter. Either way, dirt is the main culprit in MOST fuel/injector/pump related issues. Good luck, I hope you get it all sorted out.

@Dartmech They are 2023's with The Paccar engine. I need to verify that the filtration system is identical to your video because according to their QR code change instructions they are required to hand prime 170 times (exactly) so we can't prime with our fuel can anymore.

I have a 605 x15 , but if I was in the market for a road trk I would buy a mx13, I have friends to have them . They change the oil every 15000 miles . 2 have changed the def filter 200,000 miles , no baking just put a new on . Here say is that paccar will be making a 15 liter. If so that will be a game changer. I subscribed to your channel. I do like the paccar motor. I think it's a good design. but like everything else the emissions kills the motor. And all the sensors. But I would still buy one. I have a couple of issues with my x15 . But small problems. Still a good motor what I do . In heavy haul. Again if paccar builds 15 I would buy one .

That’s good to hear! Both engines have their strengths and weaknesses. The Cummins for your heavy haul, the MX for fuel economy. I’m not a driver, just worked on them and now teach. I listen to the people I talk with, and that seems to be the consensus. I worked on Cummins in the early 2000’s before the X series and moving over to the Paccar was so refreshing. Easy enough to work on, and the service information for the Technicians is on a whole other level. Thanks for the Sub! I hope the continue putting out content people enjoy, and find informative.

Good tutorial but you didn't service the Fleetguard filter as per their instructions ! Is there a reason you do it your way not theirs ?

Thanks for the feedback! I figure since I'll be using the vacuum bleeder anyway for the engine filters, I can use it to prime the fleetguard in the process. Might not be the OEM way, but gets the job done and eliminates an extra step. I'll look into fleetguard literature to see if my way will hurt anything and update the vid if necessary. Thanks again!

If you order the oem filter it comes with an instruction sheet that shows you how to properly install the filter. It states in those instructions the filter is supposed to be clicked into the cap, it is an updated instruction sheet by the manufacturer. When done this way the filter doesn't get stuck in the housing when removing. Same way the oil filter and centrifugal filter are made, the cap has groves for the filter to click in.

I see where you're getting your information. There is a conflict between the owners/filter manual and the engine service information. I used the engine service resource previously referred to as engine Rapido. I still stand by the opinion that the latter is the correct way, but the owners manual DOES tell you to put the filter in the cap. Thank you for pointing that out, I may need to make an update!

The cap is designed for the filter to click in, and I have had alot of filters get stuck inside the housing on removal because it was inserted into the housing instead of clicked into the cap.

My 2022 epa 21 is a single filter with frame mounted separator. Seen both setups on epa21

EPA has entered the Chat! Now we have to save 2 drops of oil in efficiency to use 4 drops of oil to put a California Birth Defect notification sticker on the product so some Senators son that thinks he is a Cheetah can have a work from home job making 160k a year. But that Tech don't deserve 25$ an hour without getting put under the pressure of a NASA shuttle launch every day to change the fuel filter on a French design tractor. My perspective is the only problem here though, I realize that now. It's me. I am sorry.

So you are the guy telling people how to do it the wrong way. You should read the manual before you make an instructional video. You are supposed to click the filter into the cap when installing not put it into the housing first. Otherwise the filter gets stuck in the housing and you need to pry the filter out breaking the plastic. And in what world is 20 pumps enough to prime the system 😂 wow. Don't listen to this guy, read and follow the instructions that come with the filter.

You need to spin the filter once it seats. Can’t do that with it clipped into the cap. 2021 engines yes, before that no. Also the mityvac primes the system so 20 pumps is fine. Thats all in the vid. But of course you’re free to install your filters how you wish. However, this is the process I recommend.
