Doctor, my boss had a pacemaker implanted today a.m. for afib. He had surgery done at least four times for this condition but never wanted a pacemaker implanted. He is sleeping now at the clinic and trust this time he will improve a lot. He is 82 now. That's why I watched your video, it was great. God bless you.

Very informative. I received a 3-lead pacemaker last April after fast heart-rate issues. My A-fib was eventually corrected with cardioversion, yet I am still pacemaker dependent. So far have had no issues, and hope it stays that way! Unfortunately, I believe my issues began shortly after receiving second covid vaccine, but the doctors don't agree with me. In any case, things are much better now... Great video.

What a great video, very informative, very clear to understand. A Thumbs up to you. I'm definitely subscribing. I don't have any problems at all with my heart (age 70) but my husband (age 69) has atrial fibrillation and won't take any of the medications because it makes him feel to sick, the only thing he takes is a baby aspirin every day. The doctors say they can't put a pacemaker in because his heart rate can go either to high or to low and the pacemaker won't be able to help him. Nobody has ever mentioned avnrt ablation for atrial fibrillation, along with the pace maker, unless they don't do that procedure in Canada (Hamilton Ontario) (not sure) So, If by chance, you - Dr. Sanjay Gupta, or anyone else that knows anything about it, happens to read this, I'd appreciate a little bit more information as to weather they do this procedure in Canada. But, I'm going to have him ask his doctor about that procedure the next time he sees him. Thanks for the great video.

I just tuned into this video again as a recap and saw my comment of 5 years ago so I thought it might be encouraging for people who may be going through similar situations to know that although I found out that there was no "what now" available, on the good side, I am still here, up and moving each day. Not so fast as I'd like but nonetheless glad to be moving. I gradually progressed from focusing on my condition to learning to live with it so I don't watch as many videos these days. I thank you very much Doctor Sanjay Gupta, for continuing to make these videos that explain problems of the heart so well because they have helped me understand my condition much better which, in turn, has helped me cope with it better.

Sinai recently as well as three cardioversions and I am back in afib after just a week of sinus so it’s looking like my afib is going to be stubbornly persistent. Interestingly, my rate seems better after after this last ablation after being consistently worse after the second (90’s compared to 125-145). Fortunately, I am mostly asymptomatic.At 71, my cardiologist feels I am “too young” to have a pacemaker so I am staying on Diltiazem and Eliquis for now. Thanks again Dr. G - you’re the best!

Many thanks Doctor for the Vedieo on Pacemaker. My wife Diabetic, and heart patient was becoming unconscious for couple of seconds. On Consultation with Cardiologist at NIMS, he immediately advised placement of Pacemaker. After placement of the Doctor placed two spring loaded stents simultaneously. The life of Cell was 25 years and every six months the Company who supplied checks every six months regularly.

Thanks, good explanation. I've had a pacemaker and defibrillator for 10 yrs. I got AFib in Feb because they say I got an infection. Yet they could never find the type of infection. My risk before this was always V Fib due to scar tissue and cardiomyopathy. I have had 3 ablations so far with the last for A Flutter. I was given 2 choices this time. Drugs or ablation with 3 lead pacemaker/defib. I am told the 3rd lead will regulate the other side of the atria since one already does one side. I can't live with AFib since it causes my defibrillator to shock inappropriately. I'm only 63 and hope it buys me another 5 yrs. I didn't want to go through drugs again. Amiodarone caused hypothyroidism. I figured this is a mechanical issue and therefore requires a similar response. This study was rather disconcerting. Although I am getting mine done in a high volume teaching hospital by an EP who has done all my ablations. So...fingers crossed. I am the only caretaker for my wife who had a massive stroke 5 yrs ago and is partially paralyzed and needs me to do everything. And of course the system here in US is disgraceful. I haven't manged to get her into a skilled nursing facility for the time it takes to heal because the insurance company is deliberately screwing up by closing the case and other BS. I told them straight. If there is no SNF then I'll be calling emergency ambulance for ER placement. And keep doing this until they get fed up of the bills. Over last couple years it was painful to see her with low energy, dizziness fall asleep easily shortages breath just some of the signs. her heart rate had decreased drastically to point pacemaker is necessary in order to continue provide her with a quality of life. I am getting surgery next month to remove the pacemaker wire from the center of the tricuspid valve, BECAUSE IT MAKES THE VALVE LEAK!! I have been on water pills for years because the doctor who installed the pacemaker took the easy route an threaded the lead thru the tricuspid valve and made it leak. It was found only recently by an echocardiotech who really cared enough to point it out to me just last November. Not only that the doctor should have tried meds first before he CUT MY HEART IN HALF to stop the afib. I begged him not to at the time, but he did it anyway, I think for the money. As my heart healed they could have removed the pacemaker and I would be cured. But now I am PACEMAKER DEPENDANT, I will need it forever. I hope this warning helps someone.

I am exploring if a pacemaker would help me lower my beta blockers and increase my blood flow. My AFIB is a major problem, which heavy doses of Beta Blockers seems to resolve. However, the expense is high if my kidneys fail and my edema becomes unmanageable.

It seems that Afib is a blanket name for all types of heart beat, fast, slow irregular, fast and slow etc. Are there names under the umbrella of afib? There can be misunderstandings by doctors who assume that afib is the fast heartbeat one and treat with pills that are dangerous. It's a shame that not all cardiologists are as brilliant as you. Thank you again, may be a video on the types of afib would be very useful. They could play it to doctors who are training. 😀

Well, you were good enogh to reply to only two of my questions and then stopped totally. I understand your time must be very valuable and have really nothing to complaint about. The only thing is that as you know how things are in India, I am running around from doctor to doctor to find a true answer to my problem, but no one seems to have one. Currently Medication dont seem to be controlling the AFib. I will be going for my AV node Ablation and implantation of a CRT-D device in a weeks time. I have 2 stents since 2009, dual chamber pacemaker since Feb 2019. In last 2 years I had sort of syncope episode. Once early morning at 5.30am at home, next morning at 6am while standing outside a hospital, next march 15 at 1120 am on Road under sun and last time 16 may at 1130 on Road under sun. Everything I felt numb feel, saw blacking out. Last time I passed out for few seconds. Took BP with 30 min and found BP 67/ 40 around. Did EEG, CAROTID dopler, found OK. Doctor will do HUTT. Seen lot of discussions including yours in KZfaq. Want to know: a) what tests to do to identify the cause of syncope, 2) is it happening due to pacemaker problem/ how Identify, 3) I feel my heart rate is around 65/ and before syncope I never felt Raised heartbeat, 4) will HUT test Identify the cause, 5) How Identify if I have both tachy and bradycardia, 6) how find there are two leads in pacemaker and they are working. I live in Dhaka, Bangladesh, age 74. Thanks.

I had a-Fib with 156 bpm and a cardioversion that stopped it, they found the mitral valve leak I knew for many years I had, was worse and it likely caused the A-fib, they had me on blood thinner and so on, but I told the cardiologist that I wanted a permanent FIX not a bandaid, and that I wanted to put valve repair/replacement on the table for discussion. I went in for surgery 2 years ago and they did a MAZE IV procedure to fix the A-fib and did a valve repair and anulosplasty ring, but after I woke up in recovery the nurse said I had a temp pacemaker beside me and that I had to go back in the morning to get a pacemaker put in. It was not something I expected as the MAZE was supposed to take care if the A-fib but didn't. That was done the next morning and I was home 6 weeks recovering. I had hardly any pain at all, never even touched the Oxycontin they sent me home with, but it took a lot of energy out, just walking to the mailbox 100 feet away felt like I was dragging bags of sand behind me, but endurance etc improved with physical therapy and time and by the 5th week exam I asked the doc about going back to work and I did the following monday with a 10# weight lift limit. Since there all has been fine, the pacemaker paces about 70% of the time and the recent exam shows the battery has 9.9 years left

Outstanding thank you. What happens when you go to the gym and exercise or walk fast jog and things, how does your heart increase the rate or are you stuck forever at 70 bpm? And if you lift weights can the vein leak where the lead wires are inserted from the pacemaker?

I went through open heart surgery and had 2heart valves replaced and the MAZE procedure in June. I've been in afib since. On September 29 I had Cardioversion. It held Sinus Rhythm for 2 1/2 weeks. I am not afraid of pain. What concerns me is that my heart nodes will be permanently altered and I will be dependent on the pacemaker to live. I have no backup for anything that could happen.

I have had a duel lead pacemaker for just under 2 years now, and Just this month my A-Fibs have got worst with a dull pain in my chest. It is not continuous. My question is. Would the dull pain in my chest (centre) be another blood clot because of my sudden activity of A-Fib ? the reason I say another clot is because my linq device was not monitored and resulted in 2 TIA's

I appreciate u! I'm in persistent AFib again and feel so lousy. Current condition follows: a TMVR, persistent AFib, cardioversion, and 7 months of sinus rhythm. Also still have ME/CFS contracted 10 years ago following OH MVR. The meds are miserable. E/F has not risen above 30-35% since 2 months before TMVR. This constant low QOL is really getting to me. Waiting for appt w/ electrocardiologist locally. Do you think it advisable to go to a large center (e.g., Cleveland Clinic) for a pacemaker insertion for AFib (if that finishes up being the wisest choice) or entrust this comparatively common procedure to local specialists?

Hello Dr, I enjoy listening to your videos and had a surprise last week. I went in for Knee surgery and they discovered my heart rate was too low and had an emergency pacemaker put in the next day. It’s a 2nd degree heart block. My question to you is we were looking into sprinter RVs and many of sleep above all of the Generator/battery equipment. Should I be concerned?

Good morning out of South Africa Dr I have A FIB and had a arterial cauterisation procedure done the 15-5-2023 the Dr had to stop as I couldn't take the pain he said that he can't go on and has to stop The next morning Dr came to see me in the ward and informed me that there is nothing they can do for me not even open heart surgery would help As the place to be burned is right at the middel point where the blood goes to the bottom and i understood return back So I am not sure if this is available in South Africa but would like to know if it is Maybe you have knowledge of this being done here Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us King Regards Elroux Norton

I’ve had a dual chamber pacemaker for 4 years. I had two ablations and was on drugs for two years prior to getting the pacemaker. I had the pacemaker and av node ablation and have been functioning OK… BUT… I now have Atrial flutter. I just don’t have a lot of energy and get winded easily. I do Yoga and walk at least 5km a day. I keep my weight down and have a moderately healthy diet. Can you recommend any supplements or other things I can do to manage the flutter or otherwise improve my condition? Magnesium supplements? I don’t really understand what atrial flutter is but suspect it is making my ventricles work harder? Just don’t have much get up and go.

None of the cardiologists I've been to have every actually given me a label for my heart problem. They do insist it is not a "big deal" and I could experience the symptoms (fast, 150-180bmp, but regular heartbeat) for days, and should, before going to them or an emergency room.

I have paroxysmal AF, but my symptoms that bother me are chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, on exercise, at rest, or with stress, (relieved by GTN immediately about 40% of the time) but always with a change in heartbeat to 45. I am taking betablockers, will rhythm control drugs stop the drop in rate? Do you think a pacemaker will help?

Just a quick question dr,I recently got my base rate on my pacemaker changed from 50 to 70.,I am 82. My old heart rate was 45 to 55 the pacemaker keep8 g it at 50.I didnt feel great for the 1st few weeks but it seems to have settled a bit.Can you tell me what difference that makes to the body.,God bless you for all the helpfull vidoes you make.

Hi.. Dr Sanjay.. I had my so called straightforward pacemaker implant, Just over a week ago, It was anything but .. to be honest.. I had a haemorrhage..and a punctured neck vein.. But was still sent home same day.. only to have sent back next in awful pain.. in my neck and shoulder,and very bad bruising and swelling. But although a bed had been booked in acu. There were no beds anywhere resus or a&e. Stuck in ambulance for 4 hrs.. when eventually the surgeon and arrhythmia nurse came out to treat me in the ambulance.. they eventually put pressure pack on, and prescribed oramorph . Then sent home.. It was not an experience I was anticipating.. And still I am in pain. And lacking any motivation.. plus my inr has dropped down to 1

I have to have one implanted. It really is kinda scary. I have no one to get me there and back again being as I am completely new to the area. The VA is supposed to make a way somehow, will have to wait and see tho. They say I won't be able to drive for 10 days.

This was very helpful thank you i have proximal atrial fibrillation which has become persistent 320 mg sotolol daily and now been put on 240 mg of verapamil also due to heart rate being still too high for my cardiologist liking. I had a pacemaker put in eight weeks ago as I was getting significant pauses and my natural pacemaker wasn’t kicking in When I was going from Afib into normal sinus rhythm never passed out but usually on the verge of doing so. So with the addition of the verapamil I was worried about what would happen whether the heart rate would get too low or even when I did revert which isn’t often nowadays that the medications would make it so low that I would pass out but you’ve explained which Mycardiologist really didn’t do That the pacemaker should kick in if the medications do get my heart rate too low but I will question him on this at our next zoom appointment. Hopefully it is working to keep the heart rate low so I lose the weight I need to lose to have a safe ablation. Keep up the fantastic work your videos are so helpful and my cardiac rehab nurse is now following you after I showed he some of your videos she says you explain things so anyone can get a grasp on it all

I have a very slow heart rate of 37-39 beats per minute. My watch notifies me several times a day that my heart rate has dropped below 40. My cardiologists strongly recommends a pacemaker. I have fatigue in the afternoon, but am otherwise an active 70 year old. Can I expect less tiredness after the pacemaker is implanted?

My dad has a single chamber PPI (VVIR) and his cardiologist insists that my dad cannot have a dual-chamber PPI because he has AFib. From your video, it doesn't seem that way. In fact, it appears that single chamber PPI is not the normal way to go. What's going on? When is a single chamber PPi useful then?

My wife has afib and had an ablation and a single wire placed in the right atrial to control the pumping of the heart. Now the settings are at 60 bpm to max of 130 bpm. She says she now seems to run of of breath if she is walking too much. Can that be because the settings or something else? She also had bad side affects from the blood thinners so they are going to place a watchman plug in the area that collects blood clots in the side of the right atrial. Your thoughts?
