Some of the U.S. Navy film holdings in the National Archives appear to be mixes of footage, possibly combined for duplication to use in a specific film project years ago. This results in a dub that is interesting and immersive to view, but not necessarily contiguous .
This footage starts with the landings of a number of General Motors FM-2 Wildcat fighters, including one example with substantial damage to the left wing from enemy action.
Note how the FM-2 has a manual wing-folding operation. Some of these Wildcats carry light-colored drop tanks, leftovers from before the aircraft were painted overall sea blue.
Some TBM Avenger recoveries are also filmed.
Aerial views of Avenger bombers in flight are followed by scenes of landing craft circling before heading to shore for the invasion of Iwo Jima. Aerial and naval bombardment of Iwo Jima had begun in 1944, in advance of the Marine landings on 19 February 1945.
Later aircraft carrier scenes are identified as aboard USS Essex. it is unclear whether the scenes of antiaircraft gunfire aboard the aircraft carrier are combat or training, as no enemy aircraft are shown.

Something that struck me while I was watching this video is that almost all of the guys in it are now gone. My dad flew in the European theatre during WWII and he past in 2012 at age 90. Thank you for helping to keep their memory alive.

Yes, I think of that often. They were an ever-present part of our world as we grew up, and I am better off for having known so many World War II veterans. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Ed, I just saw on the news today (12/07/2021) that amazingly, we still have just over 2K WWII vets alive in the U.S. Literally, just a handful, now. May God bless each and every one of them. Semper Fi, TreeTop

Good stuff! Amazing to see those gunners playing Acey Deucy or Backgammon as they sit in the gun mount waiting for go time.

Yes! It is interesting to see all of the little anecdotal things that the photographers captured, along with the main action.

Another great color document of U.S. Navy aircraft of WWII. The planes have very little weathering but the FMs have heavy exhaust staining. FM-2s and TBMs with inverted "V" on tail are probably from the USS Manila Bay, CVE 61. The Essex aircraft show the her late 1944 tail markings of the horizontal strip on the tail. As a little pup in the early 1960s. my mom and dad took me on a visit aboard Essex. She ever since has a spot in my heart. Thanks for posting!

Another great video! I noticed the Wildcats had the bubble hub on the prop rather than the double cylinder type. Don't know if that's the correct way to explain it. My dad was on a ship that followed the island campaigns to resupply and pick up the belongings, seabags, of Marines KIA. He was always especially sad when talking about seeing seabags with all the island battles stenciled on the side and realizing the Marine had fought all this way before being killed. A poignant reminder of the awesome sacrifice many of our young men and women made. As always God bless you and yours always and thanks again for all you do! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍😊

You observation is correct sir, these Wildcats in this footage are FM-2 s wich had different type of propellers compared to the earlier f4f variants.

Always interested seeing archive film such as this. Would just add video from the first part must have been taken from a light or escort carrier employing the FM-2 Wildcats & TBF/M Avengers. Had to have been late war for visible mounting points for rockets was a late model modification. Also Essex class carriers always employed F6F Hellcats or later F4U's Corsairs as fighter / fighter-bombers. Thank you Mr. Johnson for posting this!

The fire fighting sequence at the end was shot on CV-9. The Hellcat in the back ground landed, lost it's drop tank, which went through the prop and landed in flames up between the 5" mounts. Great footage all around in this one guys.

The Wildcats and Hellcats didn't have hydraulic wing folding equipment. It was to much weight that could be used for more ammunition and bombs. My dad flew F6Fs off the Essex 1943 then was transferred to the Hornet in 44. He wouldn't talk about the war.

I'm just a big, dumb, crayon eating, Marine sergeant but I can't understand why the U.S. Navy would have two aircraft carriers steaming this close together (@ 6:00) during wartime with no escort ships to be seen? That would seem to be a Japanese submarine commander's dream come true! As a sentimental aside, I'm typing this question on 12/07/21, eighty years, to the day, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Wildcat and the Hellcat were made by Grumman, not GM. Thanks the video.

The Wildcats in this film are tall-tail FM-2s. They were made by the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors. Late war Avengers, called TBMs, were also made by General Motors, not Grumman. The reason General Motors took over construction of Wildcats and Avengers was to free up Grumman to make as many F6F Hellcats as possible, and to develop new fighters like the F7F Tigercat and F8F Bearcat. Hey, thanks for watching.

Hmmmn? All of reality exists in our brain be it the last half second of the constantly moving NOW .. no now .. now?? .. which if not written on our memory would it exist? Half second or half a century ago it's all a dream.. Enjoy it while you can and hope that the dice of fate fall in your favour because it's all no more substantial than the shadows cast on water.
