Just watched the "Pacific Rim" episode of #LostLA. I am pretty disappointed the Director, Ki Jin Kim didn't highlight the Filipino American community of Los Angeles (except for a brief mention by Professor Scott Kurashige). This isn't an occasion to say that "there was simply not enough room to mention all Asian American communities in LA." Filipinos comprise the LARGEST Asian American community in the City of Los Angeles, the 2nd largest in LA County, and the largest in the 5-County LA Metropolitan Area. There are many angles to introduce Filipino Americans to the episode. Two of the original Pobladores who founded the City of LA were Filipino. Filipino students, or pensionados, were first brought to Southern California in 1903 as part of the United States' "pacification" efforts to justify the Philippines colonization. Filipinos started immigrating to Los Angeles in large number during the 1920s and were severely discriminated against by the LAPD. Former Mayor Frank Shaw testified in Congress for the deportation of Filipinos during the 1930s. During WWII, City officials, including former Mayor Fletcher Bowron, reversed their anti-Filipino stance and propagated Filipinos as the model Asian American community in juxtaposition to recently interned Japanese Americans to portray a supposed image of the city's racial tolerance. The Director could have highlighted the large number of Filipino laborers who worked on Terminal Island with Japanese Americans. Or the influx of Filipinos to the South Bay area due to the now-defunct naval base in Long Beach. Or how Filipinos are the backbone of the nursing industry in Southern California. Or how Filipinos are the largest Asian American group working in both the LA City and LA County governments. Or how Filipinos aren't necessarily tied to a traditional ethnic enclave, which can shift the normative views of how Asian Americans in LA are usually depicted. The Director's omission of LA's LARGEST Asian American community is a major hole in the "Pacific Rim" episode - an episode dedicated to documented the history and legacy of Asian Americans in LA. It is also indicative of the ongoing marginalization of Filipinos in many Asian American narratives. The fact that KCET is somewhat complicit in this omission is surprising as well, especially considering its administrative offices (located in Burbank and formerly in Silver Lake) are locales where Filipinos comprise the largest Asian American population.

You may be surprised to know the Aztec traded with other nations from British Columbia to Catalina Island via seagoing craft made in the northwest caulked with asphalt. Black obsidian from Oregon and Mt. Shasta soapstone bowl from Catalina. L.A. and Orange County they ignored, but noted the smog from cooking fires.
