I’ve decided to do a video on how I currently pack for a trip across the ocean in a kayak to remote islands in tropical Australian waters off the Great Barrier Reef in search of camping areas and spearfishing grounds
Special thanks to Brae from Allthings Ocean for kindly lending me a go pro5 camera getting me back on my feet so to speak and to start filming again

How I realized this was a smart man with experience? Packing the EPIRB. Neither cheap nor required for this craft, but has saved so many lives when things go wrong. Bad weather, capsize, sinking, stranded, no water, injured, sick, etc... it’s the holy grail. Just hit the button or water activation and a rescue chopper will be inbound shortly. Very smart!

I have my 2023 Hobie PA 12 In orange Camo, beautiful color. I fun fish, catch and release in the Florida keys. On the flats, mangroves, and Backcountry. My boat has all the options for the sail, outriggers, everything I need if I want to learn to sail her. My boat is complete with electronics, gps, lighting, charging ports, and a voltmeter, with lithium batteries. Most importantly, all my safety equipment. And I run the new Bixpy PP 768 motor. Me and my buddies do 4 trips a year with our kayaks. We do camp and fish trips on two different islands. I look forward to my camping trips being away. From everything. No calls, work, traffic. Lol. Only emergency communication. 🙏 🛶 🌊

Just an incredible amount of thought, preparation and gear to pull off one of your kayak camping adventures! Just one more reason why your content is second to none. Seeing all the gear you pack reminds me of my backpacking trips into the mountains, but honestly kayak camping is next level. Water complicates everything (or another way to look at it is makes it more adventurous) and you've got an awesome system in place to take you to remote places safely. Well done my friend.

Super helpful! Getting ready to do a 200-mile kayak trip and came across this. Smart to pack your stuff in dry bags that go down the hatch because it does get wet down there. I picked up a solar-powered ice chest, but will definitely use the frozen bottle technique of yours on a second unit. I love how you laid everything out and went piece by piece. Excellent! Thanks for posting this!

Agree, interested in the hobie and gear blown out to sea story... Love your AI set up. I do a fair bit of offshore runs in my TI....have added small outboard....I have found this extends the range and adds a significant safety factor for off shore sailing. Keep the videos coming!

GREAT VIDEO! Lots of great tips I learned from it. I like to carry gold bond (or something similar) to "powder my doughnuts" after a long day in a wet seat and walking around islands in damp shorts. Also, I carry a jellyfish remedy with me everywhere that I learned from a pharmacist (that works on all kinds of stings actually)...mix equal parts baking soda and meat tenderizer with just enough water to make a paste and coat the sting with it. Let sit for as long as possible and the meat tenderizer will draw the poison out of your skin while the baking soda soothes it. I like the premix the powders and carry some in an old pill bottle.

Some great tips joe , I use vinegar to deactivate the stinging cells of box jellies and irriganji , both very dangerous jelly in our area , where bouts are you located ?

Great video. I wish my AI's had the daggerboard controls like yours. I have to manual insert mine, and pull it out. I also wish I could mount a transducer inside. I dont have that option either! Look forward to more videos.

Well I'm certainly impressed. Haven't sailed a hobie, but had a 22 foot pocket cruiser for a decade or so and was always concerned about safety gear, I'm amazed you got all that gear into an AI. Was also curious what would happen if your wife went along, but then hearing about your equipment loss and being stranded on an uninhabited island, wondered if she just didn't think it was worth the risk. Looking forward to finding and watching that video. Thanks for all this... taking notes.

Love the challenge of cutting down on gear and only taking the bare essentials ,I don’t think anyone wants to join me on the kayak out in the open ocean ? Would be nice to have another person to enjoy the adventure with

Hey! Very excited to discover your channel man, your adventures are quite literally what I'm dreaming of. Down in cold Tassie here, in the process of making a video about making a DIY sail to my bin salvaged 3.9m Seak Mako. I don't think it'll be able to do any huge offshore trips like you do, aside from the weather being cold and ferocious down here my kayak is (especially with the holes drilled in it) nowhere near the quality of yours. After watching this video, I've accepted that I won't be able to fit all my stuff into the kayak holds and having dive gear on top, it's just not a good enough yak! So I was wondering about wearing a pack while I'm on the go. Seems like it'll be annoying and inconvenient, but not sure what else I can go with. Looking forward to learning a lot from your videos!

Just getting into the Hobie AI thing now . But already have a sail from Hervey bay to Fraser happening . Now i know what we’re gonna have to pack . I suppose the weight does make good ballast Ill be sending it out to our team of adventurers. Next trip might be Keppel islands which is more logistics Thanks for the info

Awesome ! Really enjoyed your last video and you made it look so simple, so it’s good to see all the thought and gear that goes behind it !! Have you thought about carrying a PLB? Not required by law but greater chance of being pinpointed by rescue? Do you have a guide for how much water you carry / need for how many days you are out?

Yes definitely want to purchase and carry a PLB in the near future As far as water I think you need at least 3litres per day bare minimum , so 2 litres for drinking and another litre for cooking and cleaning, wipe the body down each day but if you do a big amount of exercise I add another litre to that equation

Great stuff! Packing list is growing swiftly, hope I'm getting to crossing off soon. Although the newly arrived island's probably going to be a family sailing vessel with occasional camping and line fishing, I could imagine the boys becoming fairly excited about bringing a couple of spear guns.. Alas, not allowed in the Netherlands (probably for the better as one could'nt see what one's shooting at anyway..). I haven't spotted you using the tramps for counterbalancing while sailing, which I've found can help with speeding up in strong winds. By the way, what's the song playing in the background in the end? Looking forward to more videos!

Thanks for watching and appreciate the support , yes I don’t use the tramps much as I mostly use hakas I load with gear which weighs them down naturally anyway as don’t have to change direction usually in my travels east or west to or from the islands as it blows either south or north but do jump on them occasionally as they are comfy to sail on. I’m not sure about the song but pretty sure that’s from the you tube creator studio library , I’ll have a few more vids coming in the next few weeks as just completed a 18 day trip. Must get chilli on the hobie over in there Netherlands ? Do much fishing there ?

How do you go balancing weight vs essentials ? A lot use the cooper blue anchor , even for the tandem island. yours is bigger to opt for more strength? I have a tandem island, based in Sydney and keen to get out doing some expedition camping style trips, so really enjoy your tips and videos ! Thanks for the massive effort to film and put this together 👍

Still working on the balancing but it’s very important and try to keep heavy stuff mid ship or counter balance if I can’t , also wanted the bigger anchor as I dive from the craft I need my anchoring to be more reliable then the average kayaker would need Thanks heaps for watching and always happy to answer any other questions

Ha ha yea those lizards scare the poop out me , full respect to those sea lizards. We have a few down here but they mostly stay in the rivers and creeks .....I’d be sticking to your tinnies for sure , when’s the next video coming out? Would love to see another fly fishing one or even a diving one?

How important do you think the sounder / gps is for offshore island trips? I currently just use my phone, but my boat is already wired up for a raymarine dragonfly (but I’d need to buy the unit) so trying to work our how important this is on the “to buy” list :)

It is so much easier having the gps on the sounder and have found myself in tricky situations on the reef edges around the islands up here so it’s a great tool I’d say but not essential , for my activities I wouldn’t go without it now

I've had two dragonfly's in 3 years. The one single cable is prone to corrosion despite my efforts to prevent by washing after every trip. Cost $100Aus to replace. I will not buy this brand again. Our kayaks get very wet all brands will fail. Dragonfly will be one of the first.

I actually keep a PLB (personal locating beacon ) on my body now which is much smaller but does the same job , so basically I have the double assurance , thanks for stopping by

Also get yourself a ACR resqlink400 PLB. Wear on your life jacket. In case you are separated from your vessel epirb.. . Even though you are only 35 miles off shore that's is a huge search grid to find one person. Your vessel will be found before you.

dont know if you guys down under know about how to remove jelly fish stins (fire coral as well) but we in the Carribean we have a tried and true method we LITERRALY PISS on ourself (if you have a Gfriend/BFriend/Friend you can ask them to "PISS ON YOU").

stilt I’m now wearing a safety line just in case but it’s actually really hard to fall of this craft , still developing my systems and what I carry as I’d like to do bigger trips

@@markjvairy OK..Very interested in getting one. I have a number of sea kayaks (sit-on) and usually wear a surf leash to my ankle in case it happens. I know it may be hard to fall out but if it happens I think kayaks can sail/float away faster than you can swim with a bouyancy aid on. Thanks.

Yes I’ve actually had it float away a lot quicker then I can swim which I’ll be doing a story on in the future , it actually left me stranded on an island . I’ve been in big seas and little chance while seating in the seat but moving around the tramps there’s always that slight chance so better to be safe then sorry for sure . I highly recommend this craft , they are bit extra work then a kayak but have a huge capability as I’m finding whilst testing it out
