Packing for My First Backcountry Discovery Route Adventure: Soft Luggage for My First BDR

I'm beyond excited to be heading out for my first Backcountry Discovery Route adventure in just a few days. I'll be tackling the Washington BDR (or WABDR) on my Norden 901, and I'm spending the last few days streamlining my BDR soft luggage setup and camping gear to ensure I'll have everything I need to motorcycle camp comfortably while still being able to ride the WABDR safely and easily. For my first BDR adventure, I'll be using the Giant Loop RTW Panniers, Giant Loop Tillamook Dry Bag, and Giant Loop Diablo tank bag. This setup will allow me to tackle my first BDR in comfort.
The key to packing a lot of gear is to keep your heavier items lower and to the sides of the motorcycle. If you're using a top bag like the Giant Loop Tillamook bag, that's a great place for your bulky, lightweight bdr gear items like your tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, and the like.

I’m hitting the Wyoming BDR in September and I have all my gear on a table for review and slow elimination. I revisit my gear every couple days and try to remove an item or two. It’s so easy to over pack, and I’m really focused on making this my lightest pack out yet. *Pro Tip* Motorcycle trips are a great resource to rid of your old bottom of the drawer underwear. Wear em and burn em so you’re not packing dirty gitch. Thanks for the continued entertainment Ben.

What's the total weight of your gear - and the weights of each bag? What did you wish you had that you didn't take? What would you have left behind if you were to do the same trip again?

Great questions! So many bags they must add up in weight…and do so many little bags make it complicated to locate items? I value time a little more than weight. In a group, the slowest packer holds up all riders. How much time is it taking to unpack, cook, clean up and pack? How would you do that different?

Bags were 80 pounds total. 30-ish in each side, 20 on top. I'm working on a vid for my channel about gear that I'd leave behind next time but basically I way overpacked on cooking stuff and would leave 1/3 of it home next time.

Packing up was quick and easy because I keep all the camping stuff in the top bag. Very fast to get out and put back that way. No digging required.

Went RTW on KLR650 with what I could fit in panniers spent 12months on the road with less than what you're taking. Weight always matter.

Hmm, actually kinda of glad I got the tusk lg hard panniers and lg duffle for the back top. Reminds of "digging" for stuff back packing, ugh.

Hi there any chance to stick the Giant loop pannier bags to a triumph Scrambler 2024 , I ask for the pannier bag plate system . Like the solid construction for my camera equipment but as you know have the high muffler which comes with the scrambler . I have the new 2024 model XE..

Hello, I'm not sure we got your question correctly. if you are referring to these: uniongaragenyc.com/products/unit-garage-atlas-series-racks-triumph-scrambler-1200-xc-xe yes, our pannier mounts would fit these racks. The rear rack instead, is not designed to hold side panniers, but only the top box or bags.

when packing camp stoves and other slightly fragile items on the side panniers, should there be a concern on laying the bike down like when at low speed technical areas?

Depends on where you put them and what else is in the bag with them. There's always some risk but I've dropped my bikes many times and haven't had any major issues with items in my bags breaking.

Any reason not to use hard cases vs the soft ones? I’m in the market for bags for my G650GS and am concerned soft bags will tear more easily.

Hard cases are dangerous when you crash and can get bent out of shape and become unusable. They're also heavier. Our bags have done millions of miles on and off road and countless drops and crashes without issue. If you do have an issue, you're covered by our lifetime warranty.

If you add the GL Pannier Mounts you should be good to go with any racks that have 16-18mm tubing.

@@GiantLoopMoto got to keep your whole camp kotchen clean. It not a good view or smell when a grown man crap himself doing rough terrain and his stomach says back at you for dirty kitchen.
